A look at Broncos defensive end Ryan McBean, a former Steeler:

Height, weight: 6-feet-5, 297 pounds

The buzz: McBean went from the practice squad in 2008 to a starter in 2009, thanks in large part to the Broncos' switch to a 3-4 defensive alignment that is a better fit for his size and athletic ability. He has started all seven games for the Broncos and has 11 tackles in a 6-1 season that continues Monday night in Denver against the Steelers.

Looking ahead: McBean was a fourth-round draft pick by the Steelers from Oklahoma State in 2007 and spent his rookie year in Pittsburgh, most of it on the practice squad. The Steelers cut him after training camp in 2008, and he was on Denver's practice squad last year.

McBean will line up Monday as a starter against the team that released him. The Broncos' new coaches said they saw plenty of raw talent in McBean last spring.

"Ryan's got a lot of upside. Hopefully he keeps getting better each and every day and week," defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said. "I know he's getting better in the long haul, but the sooner guys can improve, the better. Really, what we saw in him was a guy who had an opportunity to make the squad and make us better."

FYI: McBean, 25, was born in Jamaica, making him one of two Broncos born outside of the United States. The other is defensive lineman Marcus Thomas, who was born in Japan.
