The Chicago Sun Times believes Bernard Berrian, Lance Briggs, and Brendon Ayanbadejo are "nearly certain" to leave the Bears in free agency.

The Bears may not deem Berrian worthy of the franchise tag due to Devin Hester's emergence as a receiver. Ayanbadejo could look for somewhere he can play more defense. Briggs might price himself out of Chicago's range.

The Cardinals are expected to add a more explosive running back with tackle breaking ability this offseason.

J.J. Arrington is fast, but doesn't shed many tackles. The Cards will likely bring Edgerrin James back, but it sounds like they want him to be part of a committee in 2008. Arrington will be competing just to make the club.

The Cards' problem with their run game is not their running backs, it's their offensive line and their blocking scheme. Give Weisenhunt a little more time and they'll be in the top 10 in every offensive category there is.

The only problem that offense will have is their QB. Warner is not the answer and Wisenhunt is not very fond of Leinart. Hell, I don't know if anyone is very fond of Leinart, barring his mother.

Martz fired...
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3177253

Source: Lions fire Martz, promote Colleto, Brown to lead offense

The Detroit Lions have fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz and promoted offensive line coach Jim Colleto and wide receivers coach Kippy Brown to run the offense in his place, a source in the organization told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Colleto will be named offensive coordinator and remain as the offensive line coach, while Brown is being promoted to assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, and will also serve as running backs coach.

Martz confirmed his firing to the Detroit Free Press.

"We fell short of what we wanted to do offensively, and I regret that," he told the newspaper.

In other changes, the Lions promoted Shawn Jefferson from offensive assistant to wide receivers coach and fired Martz's son, Tim Martz, as an offensive assistant.

On Sunday, after their season ended with a loss to the Green Bay Packers, members of the Lions offense said the blame should be on them.

"You can keep changing coaches, but every time you change them that's a new system,'' said quarterback Jon Kitna. "The reality is, the games that we lost, the majority, the times that things didn't go right, it was self-inflicted stuff.

"It wasn't a coaching thing where you were outcoached or they weren't putting you in a position to be successful. There were plays to be made, and we didn't make them for whatever reason that is.''

However, Martz is not expected to be out of work for long. According to media reports, the San Francisco 49ers will seek him out as a replacement for current offensive coordinator Jim Hostler.

Martz led the St. Louis Rams to the playoffs in four of his five full seasons as a head coach, including a Super Bowl after the 2001 season, and helped the franchise win the 2000 Super Bowl as offensive coordinator. The Rams went 51-29 in the regular season and 54-33 overall during his five full seasons as coach.

Wednesday, January 2
Jets might keep Pennington
Chad Pennington | Jets
Chad Pennington's midseason demotion, coupled with his ambiguous comments about his future, has fueled rampant speculation in recent weeks that he will be traded or released.

But don't throw away those No. 10 jerseys just yet. As the Jets embark on what figures to be an eventful offseason, the organization is leaning heavily toward retaining Pennington, the New York Daily News reported. Pennington is signed through 2011 and, although his 2008 salary ($4.8 million) is steep for a potential backup, the club is prepared to keep him, presumably to battle Kellen Clemens next training camp.

Eric Mangini declined Monday to tip his hand on the all-important quarterback decision, except to say he's not ready to anoint Clemens the undisputed starter for 2008, as he did a year ago for Pennington.

Miami Dolphins
Crennel in Dolphins' mix?
Don't discount Romeo Crennel as a long-shot candidate for the Dolphins, writes John Clayton. Even though Crennel is under contract for two more seasons in Cleveland, he's at a juncture where he needs to know where he stands. A contract extension would be one way to give him some support.

For Bill Parcells to bring him to Miami, the Dolphins would have to work out draft-choice compensation. The Browns had a great season. They went 10-6 and Crennel has the full support of his players. He is so popular among his players, it would be hard for ownership to explain to the players why their coach was traded. With Parcells possibly interested, Crennel is in a good position to find out where he stands in Cleveland.

Walker moving on?
Javon Walker | Broncos
Walker wants out of Denver, and Mike Shanahan will probably accommodate his trade demand, writes John Clayton. Shanahan will feel good about having Brandon Marshall and Brandon Stokley as the Broncos' starting receivers. He could use the draft to develop a third receiver.

Atlanta Falcons
Coaching search intensifies
Falcons owner Arthur Blank is intrigued by 49ers assistant Mike Singletary as a head coach candidate, and the Falcons will ask permission to interview Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan this week, Chris Mortensen reports.

But the sleeper may be Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell, who will get huge endorsements from Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy. Dungy got his first job from then-Bucs GM Rich McKay, who has been offered an extension by Blank to remain as the Falcons' team president and lead the search for a new football ops boss and coach. Of course, if Dungy should retire -- he has called himself year-to-year -- then Caldwell would be his likely successor in Indy.

Anderson available?
Derek Anderson | Browns
Needing to fill many holes, especially on a defense that struggled with injuries all season, the Browns will listen to offers for Anderson, who passed for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns this season but also had 19 interceptions.

"If anybody is interested in him, we'll just have to see how it goes," Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said. "Sometimes people can make you an offer and you can say, 'No, I think I'm going to stay with what I got.' Sometimes they make you an offer and you say, 'Oooohhh.'"

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, citing an unnamed source, reported on Jan. 1 that the Browns' current plan is for Anderson to be on the 2008 roster.

Bills dangling Losman?
J.P. Losman | Bills
Because the pool of free-agent quarterbacks is hardly impressive, the Bills might be able to generate interest in former starter Losman on the trade market, writes Len Pasquarelli.

The Bills' first-round pick in the 2004 draft, Losman regressed this season, demonstrating questionable decision-making before he lost his job to Trent Edwards. But the four-year veteran still has upside; he'll turn 27 in the spring, right about the time the offseason trade moratorium ends. Losman is athletic, has a pretty strong arm and made strides in 2006, when he started 16 games.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Kansas City Chiefs, who fired OC Mike Solari, might take a run at former Lions OC Mike Martz, who wants to coach next season. But if Martz cannot land the right job, he does have a contract with one year remaining on it that Detroit would be obligated to pay.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the San Francisco 49ers is searching for a new offensive coordinator and the leading candidate is not former Lions OC Mike Martz, who was dismissed by Detroit Wednesday. The leading candidate to take over as the 49ers offensive coordinator is former Georgia Tech and Dallas Cowboys HC Chan Gailey. Niners HC Mike Nolan spent five seasons in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s working with Gailey in Denver. There is a comfort level there between the two men, and Gailey has respect around the league. Martz might have interested the 49ers front office and coaching staff, but ownership never seemed keen on the idea of bringing on the former Lions signal caller. Thus while San Francisco looks at Gailey, Martz is left to look elsewhere.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Baltimore Ravens spent much of this week in meetings, debating which head coaching candidates they should be pursuing. Baltimore discussed 30 -- 30! -- potential candidates, leaving Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti plenty of work to do to uncover the potential "Hall-of-Fame" coach he is seeking to take over his franchise. The Ravens already have faxed permission requests to the Dallas Cowboys to interview assistant head coach Tony Sparano and OC Jason Garrett, the Indianapolis Colts to interivew their assistant head coach, Jim Caldwell, and the New England Patriots to interview OC Josh McDaniels. The Ravens want to make sure they contact the assistant coaches in this season’s playoffs and attempt to interview them this week, during the window that is open. After this week the Ravens can focus on coaches not involved in the postseason. But the Ravens' work is far from done. There still will be more meetings, further debating the merits that each particular head coach could bring, as Baltimore continues to do the legwork to find a new coach. It could be a while before the Ravens hire their new head man.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Falcons owner Arthur Blank is scheduled to travel to Indianapolis to interview Colts vice president of football operations, Chris Polian, on Thursday for the Falcons general manager job. And from Indianapolis, Blank will visit Dallas, where he is scheduled to interview Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano and OC Jason Garrett on Friday for the Falcons head coaching job. And once he wraps up those trips, Blank plans to hone in on Eagles GM Tom Heckert, who would be allowed to leave Philadelphia only because he would be given more decision-making responsibility in Atlanta.

The Press Democrat reports the San Francisco 49ers have not been contacted by any team seeking permission to speak with assistant head coach Mike Singletary for a head-coaching position.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Falcons owner Arthur Blank and team president Rich McKay were scheduled to interview Packers director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie in Green Bay for the team's general manager vacancy Wednesday, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. Blank and McKay also plan to interview Indianapolis assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell Thursday about the Falcons' available head coaching position, a person with knowledge of the scheduled interview said. Blank and McKay also will interview Dallas Cowboys offensive assistants Tony Sparano and OC Jason Garrett this week. Besides Caldwell, Garrett and Sparano, former Ravens DC Rex Ryan and San Francisco assistant head coach Mike Singletary are expected be contacted by Atlanta about its head coaching job.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports it seems about 95 percent sure that the Eagles will go forward with QB Donovan McNabb next season, with QB Kevin Kolb waiting in the wings. The only real threat to that scenario would be if a Minnesota, a Chicago or a Baltimore were so desperate for a top-line quarterback that it made a franchise-altering offer for McNabb. That's not impossible, but it is unlikely.

The Oakland Tribune reports sources indicate Raiders DC Rob Ryan was told before the team's final game, against San Diego on Sunday, that he would not be returning in 2008 and had already secured his next place of employment, hardly a surprise but still somewhat remarkable in that just 12 months ago, Ryan received more than just cursory consideration for the head job HC Lane Kiffin got.

New York Newsday reports Jets HC Eric Mangini indicated that there may be room for both ILB David Harris and ILB Jonathan Vilma (knee - IR) at inside linebacker, though how effective Vilma can be in the 3-4 is still a point of contention. As for Harris' five sacks, Mangini said he didn't realize the rookie could rush the passer that well. "I don't know if he realized it [either]," Mangini said. "That really wasn't his gig in college"

Bronco9798

The New York Daily News reports Jets HC Eric Mangini's decision on DC Bob Sutton could be influenced by the availability of two potential replacements - Raiders DC Rob Ryan and his brother, former Ravens DC Rex Ryan, who was fired on Monday with the rest of Brian Billick's staff. Mangini has spoken highly of both Ryans, especially Rob, who is under fire and could be dismissed today. Rex is expected to interview for the Ravens' head-coaching vacancy, but he could be on the Jets' radar if it doesn't work out in Baltimore. If the Jets ended up with Rex, it could enhance their chances of signing Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs, believed to be on their free-agent wish list.

ESPN's John Clayton reports GM A.J. Smith's signing of a five-year extension means stability for the Chargers, and that's good news for HC Norv Turner. Even if he doesn't win a playoff game, Turner won't be a "one-and-done" coach. Owner Dean Spanos has great confidence in the judgment of Smith, who hired Turner. A win Sunday over the Titans would make everyone feel even better about the long-term stability of the franchise.

The Detroit News reports the Lions have 13 players who are eligible to be unrestricted free agents: LB Boss Bailey, LB Teddy Lehman, RB T.J. Duckett, RB Aveion Cason, RB Tatum Bell, TE John Owens, CB Tony Beckham, FS Idris Bashir, CB Kevin Smith, CB Travis Fisher, ORT George Foster, WR Troy Walters and OG Damien Woody. Four players will be restricted free agents: QB Dan Orlovsky, OG Stephen Peterman, DT Langston Moore and CB Stanley Wilso

Monte Kiffin says he isn't interested in leaving Tampa Bay to be the Raiders' defensive coordinator.

As of Wednesday, there is no defensive coordinator vacancy in Oakland, but Rob Ryan is likely to be dismissed shortly. There have been rumors that Kiffin might go there to run the defense for his son, Lane. Monte admitted that his contract with Tampa is up, but he's had no conversations about leaving.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Dolphins have fired Cam Cameron.

Bill Parcells likely waited until GM Jeff Ireland was in place before making this move, since the GM should be able to hire the coaching staff. If the Dolphins want to interview any Cowboys assistants, they will have to do it in the next two days or wait until Dallas is out of the playoffs. Cameron becomes a leading candidate to fill any offensive coordinator jobs; San Francisco makes a lot of sense. Dallas could be another possibility.

DAVIE, Fla. -- Cam Cameron is no longer coach of the Miami Dolphins after getting only one win in his first season.

Cameron was fired Thursday by new Dolphins' boss Bill Parcells, which means the reeling franchise will have its fifth head coach in five seasons in 2008.

Parcells began work Thursday as executive vice president of football operations and quickly concluded the Dolphins need another fresh start.

This comes from a Miami message board from a guy that is highly respected and has many good inside resources:

It gets even more interesting. I posted the other day that the hot rumor was the Boyz offering both 1's and Barber to move up to number 1 for McFadden. I said it was something being discussed around valley ranch.

Well...now it appears that someone else is reporting on a blog that he is hearing that a 4th round pick could also be in the mix AND that Parcells has already had a preliminary discussion with Jones and that LB Bobby Carpenters name has been brought up in the trade talks as well.

Carpenter was drafted by Parcells.
Where this gets interesting is the Ireland hire. Ireland knows what Jones wants in the draft and who. So much so that yesterday Jones publicly said that the sticking point to releasing Ireland from his contract was the fact that he did not want his "secrets" out there...after Ireland was released, Jones said publicly that he was comfortable with the arrangment and assurances that he recieved from Bill, Jeff, and Wayne.

Another rumor that I have heard is that Ricky Williams may be part of any trade to the Cowboys. His mother is from that region of Texas and some say that it might be easier for him to stay off Pot with his mother around. It would also make a little sense as if Barber does in fact leave Dallas in a trade for McFadden, Ricky would provide a healthy body...presumably. That is not something that I have heard from an inside source at the Ranch though...and right now I would think it is nothing more than wild speculation.

Still, the Cowboys from what I have been told are in fact wanting to TRY and move to number 1 and they are resigned to the fact that Tony Sparano will not be with them come the 2nd week of February

well i can see miami wanting the 2 1sts and the 4th, but barber?? they got brown already who is a stud. why would they want marion? The only possible scenario that i can think of is that they will then trade marion to someone for...well their whole team sucks so anything they can get i guess.

Also, i thought miami just extended the contract of williams. wouldnt it have been better for them (regarding a trade) to not extend the contract as it might deter another team away. (as if ricky wouldnt deter them on his own)

If thats true about marion and the 1sts and the 4th, i wouldnt at all be surprised to see if shanny stickes his nose in there somewhere to make it another 3 team trade. Dallas sends us their first and player for our #12, and then they send our #12 and their other 1st,4th and Barber or player to the fins....That is also a prototypical shanny move.

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports New England Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, who in only his second season in the position presided over a unit that established new league records for touchdowns and points scored, has decided he will not interview for any head coach vacancies this year. Both the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens this week sought permission from Patriots officials to meet with McDaniels about their respective openings. Under league rules, New England essentially had to honor the requests, since the interviews would have been for a head coaching position. But McDaniels, who also serves as quarterbacks coach, did not have to agree to the interviews, and has decided in general not to pursue any head coach positions for the 2008 season. Franchises seeking new head coaches can interview assistants from clubs with playoff byes this week, but the sessions must take place by Saturday. After that, coaches from playoff franchises can only be interviewed after their teams are eliminated, or during the "open" week between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. McDaniels, 31, along with Dallas Cowboys OC Jason Garett, Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano and Indianapolis Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell are arguably the hottest assistant coaches in the league right now.

The Palm Beach Post reports Dallas assistant head coach Tony Sparano and Cleveland Browns HC Romeo Crennel top the list of head-coaching candidates for Bill Parcells and new GM Jeff Ireland. In fact, an NFL source familiar with the league's coaching carousel said Thursday that Sparano and Crennel essentially make up the Dolphins' "A" list.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports NFL teams in the market for free-agent wide receivers could choose from Oakland WR Jerry Porter, New England WR Jabar Gaffney or New Orleans WR David Patten, among others. But rather than signing a free-agent wide out, teams could decide to trade for one.

NFL fined Patriots NT Vince Wilfork $15,000 for poking Brandon Jacobs through his facemask in Week 17.

It looked like Wilfork was trying to poke his eye, but he didn't connect. Wilfork had 48 tackles and two sacks in 2007, his first Pro Bowl season.

I still don't get how Lynch was fined $75,000 for the hit he put on Dallas Clark that one game and a guy can attempt to poke someone in the eye like Wilfork did and only get a $15,000 dollar find?

The Sacramento Bee's Jason Jones doesn't believe impending free agent Jerry Porter wants to return to the Raiders in 2008.

Coach Lane Kiffin seemed to like him, but Porter may look to test the market and cash in on what may be his last big contract. Porter turns 30 before next season. Jones adds that if Chad Johnson goes on the trade block, he'd be "shocked" if Raiders owner Al Davis doesn't make a pitch to get him.

I really hope we get Michael Clayton or Bryant Johnson. They can both catch and are both excellent blockers down the field. The only problem with that is we wouldn't really be adding any deep threats. We do need a speed guy. Not sure if Stokely qualifies as that or even Marshall.

Fox sports' Jay Glazer reports the Baltimore Ravens will interview former San Diego Chargers HC Marty Schottenheimer for their open head coaching job in their second round of interviews.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports former Miami Dolphins HC Cam Cameron is a candidate to be the next offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.

The New Haven Register reports New Haven native and Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano has been offered the head coaching position by the Miami Dolphins and will accept it at the conclusion of the Dallas Cowboys’ season, according to a source.

The Press Gazette reports the Green Bay Packers haven't engaged in any contract talks with their most important unrestricted free agent, DT Corey Williams. Williams, the former sixth-round draft pick, is looking for his first significant NFL pay day and the longer he goes without hearing anything from the Packers, the more he's starting to wonder if he'll be playing for another team next season. The Packers didn't talk to Williams' new agent, Blake Baratz, during the season, when teams can prorate a portion of a signing bonus on the current year's salary cap. That's no longer an option, so there's little incentive for the Packers to negotiate now. If they're interested in bringing back Williams, they'll likely make a push to do so before the March free-agency period. "Supposedly, they want to talk," Baratz said. "We're more than willing to talk now. We may be very close on where we see his value, or we may be very far. But we haven't talked, so I don't know how close or far off we are. It's a question of assessing his value." This season has been the best of Williams' four-year NFL career. He finished third on the team in tackles among defensive linemen and matched his career-best sack total of seven, a mark he first set last season. He started fast, but his production has dropped since his snap count increased after the loss of DT Colin Cole and DT Johnny Jolly to season-ending injuries.

The Press Democrat reports the 49ers are scheduled to interview Mike Martz for the vacant offensive coordinator position tomorrow. Martz was fired last week as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. Martz was coordinator for two seasons. The Lions ranked 19th in the league in total offense, but were ninth in the league in passing yards per game.

The Tribune-Review reports Pro Bowl OG Alan Faneca has almost certainly played his last game as a Steeler at Heinz Field. Faneca will be a free agent after the season, and it doesn't look like he and the Steelers will reach a contract agreement before one of the best offensive linemen in team history hits the open market in March. "I think if it was going to happen it would have happened," Faneca said last week. "Doors never close, but there is a point when reality sets it." Reality hit Faneca hard during the offseason when he and management never came close to consummating a long-term deal that probably would have allowed him to retire as a Steeler. Faneca, 31, blasted the organization for not making what he considered a serious offer last May and said this season would be his last in a Steelers uniform. Whatever hard feelings he had toward the organization did not affect Faneca on the field. He started all 17 games at left guard and was voted to the Pro Bowl for a seventh consecutive season. Despite what he's done in Pittsburgh and the reality that the Steelers need to add quality offensive linemen, not subtract them, Faneca isn't expecting a breakthrough in regards to a contract. That is why the 10th-year veteran took some time to reflect before Saturday night's AFC wild-card game against the Jaguars. "You know," Faneca said, "to think back when the game is over, my last time on the field, stuff like that you just take it and enjoy it."

The Buffalo News reports QB J.P. Losman’s days in Buffalo were numbered Nov. 26, the day he was benched for good in favor of rookie QB Trent Edwards. So it’s no surprise that Losman’s agent confirmed this week that he wants the Bills to trade his client this offseason. While Gary Wichard, Losman’s agent, says his client would play out his contract in Buffalo next season if necessary, the reality is Losman is virtually certain to be gone from the Bills before the 2008 season starts. Losman has no future in Buffalo. He has no interest in being a backup with no chance to win the starting job, and he would be given no chance to unseat Edwards if the two went to training camp together. The Bills have made their choice clear. Edwards is their man. Losman declined to speak to the media when the Bills cleaned out their lockers Monday. However, there is no doubt he believes the Bills pulled the plug on him prematurely and should have put him back in the lineup as soon as he recovered from the sprained knee he suffered in Week Three at New England. Losman made four starts in the middle of the season after Edwards was hurt. “He knows they bailed on him,” Wichard said. “Nobody would ever say, ‘J.P., you’re our quarterback.’ They said it was a week-to-week job. He was waiting to be yanked. And that’s what eventually happened.” So Losman is eager for a new start in another city. The Bills don’t have to move Losman for financial reasons. He’s due to earn about $2 million next season. Losman had a $5 million escalator in his contract for 2008. But that was dependent in large part on him playing 50 percent of the snaps in 2007. He didn’t. The Bills probably will have to spend a good $2 million a year to find some veteran journeyman to back up Edwards. It doesn’t matter. The Bills have a lot of holes to plug on the roster and need all the draft choices they can get. They don’t need a pouting No. 2 QB. Moving Losman makes too much sense to not happen.

definitely good news. . . i didn't, and don't, expect them to make a serious push to keep him-- they've got some good young DTs that they can rotate, who aren't costing them much of anything, and they have a 1st rounder ready to step in at the position. . . no real need for them to pay williams big dollars-- he's a good player, but they have bigger needs elsewhere. . .

i've said many times that i think he should be our top target in free agency, and will probably say it many more between now and march. . .

The Nashville Tennessean reports DT Albert Haynesworth is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 2. The Titans are expected to put a franchise tag on him, which will keep him off the market but assure him of a one-year salary equal to the average of the five highest-paid players at his position. "I'm not really worried about it," Haynesworth said. "As long as I get to keep playing the game I'll be OK. I've been here since '99 starting with the Vols and drafted by the Titans and I'd love to retire as a Titan. Hopefully all the salary cap stuff, hopefully we can get that done."

The Tribune-Review reports Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said no decision has been made regarding what to do about OG Alan Faneca's status as an unrestricted free agent. "No, nothing," Colbert said after the Jacksonville Jaguars eliminated the Steelers, 31-29, on Saturday night at Heinz Field. "We've just been working on the draft; none of that other stuff."

The New York Daily News reports Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum wouldn’t come right out and say that he will appease WR Laveranues Coles with a contract extension, but he said the organization’s goal is to keep Coles in a Jets uniform for “a long time.” He has two years, $11 million remaining on his current deal. Presumably, a “long time” means more than two years. Tannenbaum spoke of Coles in almost reverential terms, saying, “He has almost a Curtis Martin-type persona in the building.” He said he talked recently with the agent for OLB Victor Hobson, who will be an unrestricted free agent. Gut feeling: They’ll make him a modest offer, and Hobson will decide to test the open market. Tannenbaum admitted, though not in so many words, that he may have mishandled the OG Pete Kendall situation by not being more proactive. But he suspects it wouldn’t have changed the outcome, saying, “Pete is a stubborn guy from Boston.” He meant that affectionately. He said he expects LB Jonathan Vilma (recovering from knee surgery) to be back, but he didn’t sound totally committed to that.

The Associated Press reports that Joe Gibbs has resigned from the Redskins.

No other information is available yet. Gibbs seemed worn down at times this season, and the team's strong finish may make it easier to step away. Defensive coach Gregg Williams gets a $1 million bonus if he's passed up for the head job, so he's the heavy favorite to replace Gibbs.

WILLIAMS HAS NO GUARANTEE by Michael David Smith

A league source tells PFT that contrary to popular belief, there is no guarantee in the contract of Redskins assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams that he will either be Joe Gibbs' successor or receive a bonus payment from owner Dan Snyder.

Multiple media reports have indicated that Williams had been promised either the head-coaching job when Gibbs left, or, at minimum, that Snyder would pay Williams a million-dollar bonus if he were not offered the job upon Gibbs' departure.

But in reality, there is no such deal in place. Although Williams' contract pays him a higher salary to run the defense than some NFL head coaches make, Williams won't necessarily get a big check from Snyder if he isn't named the Redskins' next head coach.

I know its a pipe dream, but wouldnt it be freakin sweet as hell if we could get this guy.

Will Pete Carroll end up in NFL after all?

After leading the USC Trojans to an 11-2 record and a sixth straight BCS bowl appearance, Carroll is being courted by the Atlanta Falcons, according to an Internet report.

Apparently, the Falcons have been trying to set up a meeting with the former Jets and Patriots coach, and this meeting could come as soon as this weekend, if logistically possible. Carroll is one of a few candidates that Atlanta wishes to interview, others including Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and possibly Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

The Falcons have been without a head coach since Bobby Petrino left with three games remaining in the season. He soon returned to the college ranks by accepting the Arkansas job.

Many feel that Carroll would only return to the NFL is he was given full control over a team. While that doesn't initially look possible in Atlanta -- since the team is searching for a general manager -- sources say that Carroll might be given additional responsibilities.

Wasn't he the receivers coach?

IDK, he was an assistant coach for the last couple of years. I want to say on the defensive side of the ball, but IDK off the top of my head. Of course, he was a LB for Denver for 10 years or so.

EDIT: According to denverbroncos.com, Jim Ryan was an "Offensive Assistant"

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Colts head coach Tony Dungy will consider retirement during the offseason.

Dungy, 51, never intended to coach well into his 50s and is reportedly "anxious" to join the ministry. If Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren also steps down and the Raiders can Lane Kiffin, we could have up to three more coaching vacancies aside from Washington, Baltimore, Atlanta, and Miami.

Maybe slowlic will be consider for one of these jobs a dream come true..

I agree with you. I can't believe a team would give him "total control" just to lure him from USC.

its ATL for Gods sake they would take any decent warm body..

He would be plain stupid to leave USC he has it made there, almost no competition he gets to chose from all the top players. Keeps them for 3-5 years and they move on. They are all motivated to give their best no contract hassles plenty of talent, no cap issues.

Plain stupid to move from a dream job..

Now lets make an EX LB a linebacker coach round peg round hole.. Maybe they got something right this time..

Carrol always "listens" to NFL teams that show genuine interest. But why would he jump ship? He has said time and time again, at USC he gets to recruit the equivalent of 6+ #1 draft picks every year, has a certain amount of control over the schedule, runs the entire program however he wants and has little media to answer to. Leave all of that to go to ATL? Dream on.

because he has lest pressure on him and he can build his own team and not just take over a great team that Marty built. If he struggles he can always look back and say Atlanta wasn't a good team to begin with, if he struggled in San Diego everyone would say he stinks. Plus what fun is it to go to the NFL to build a team to greatness if you can't add a few players here and there... He can have fun in Atlanta.

I hope Pete goes to Atlanta. This would be great for Falcons fans like me after a really tough year. The ESPN article I read today says Carroll is reportedly interested in meeting with Arthur Blank. It seems to me that in the past few years, every time a team is interested in them, he tells them no before even meeting. This could be a good sign.

The Texans have a new assistant head coach and a new offensive coordinator.

They hired Alex Gibbs as assistant head coach and promoted quarterbacks coach Kyle Shanahan to offensive corodinator.

Gibbs, who retired from the NFL last year after spending three seasons with Atlanta, spent 13 years as the offensive line coach and assistant head coach at Denver when Gary Kubiak was a backup quarterback and offensive coordinator.

"Alex is an outstanding coach, and we're fortunate to get him," Kubiak said. "I'm not sure how long we'll have him, but whether it's one year, two years or longer, we've got to soak up his knowledge of the game.

"I'm excited to have Kyle as the new coordinator. I don't care about his age. I've worked side-by-side with him, and his knowledge of attacking coverages is beyond his years. I think he's going to make an excellent play-caller, too."

Gibbs, 66, replaces Mike Sherman on the staff. Sherman, who was hired by Texas A&M, was assistant head coach/offensive coordinator.

"There's no doubt in my mind that Alex is going to help make us a better team," Kubiak said. "I can promise you that we're going to run the ball better."

Gibbs, who also was being pursued by Kansas City and Baltimore, will oversee everything on offense. He'll work closely with offensive line coach John Benton.

With Gibbs, the Texans will tailor their running game to the zone blocking scheme he put in at Denver and Atlanta. During his three seasons with the Falcons (2004-06), the Falcons led the league in rushing each season.

-- Damn that Gary Kubiak. His Denver team will be better than ours. Grrr.

The agent for Cardinals LB Karlos Dansby is believed to be seeking a contract that will pay his client over $15 million in guarantees.

Dansby has been somewhat injury prone, but is younger than Adalius Thomas was at this point last year and is arguably just as impactful. Thomas got $20 million guaranteed, so $15-$20 million wouldn't seem unreasonable.

The Philadelphia Daily News reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to revisit CB Pacman Jones' suspension in February after he returns from the Pro Bowl. Jones probably will be reinstated then. Titans HC Jeff Fisher wasn't ready to talk about Jones this week. "We've got a lot of internal discussions that will be taking place regarding his status," Fisher said. According to several league sources, the Titans will look to trade Jones. He would address two of the Eagles' more pressing offseason needs – a shutdown corner and a kick returner. But there's no way HC Andy Reid would consider bringing a guy with his character issues to One NovaCare Way.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Bucs GM Bruce Allen defended oft-criticized WR Michael Clayton, the four-year player who has failed to come near the 80-catch, 1,193-yard production of his rookie season. "Michael Clayton did come back for us this year in a very strong way," he said. "He sets a tone you don't see in a lot of wide receivers in the NFL. I think in the playoff game he made some nice grabs. I think his future is still in front of him." Clayton had 22 receptions for 301 yards and no touchdowns, his lowest production.

The Southwest Florida News-Press reports the Bucs are expected to trade for an elite player such as WR Chad Johnson or sign an elite one such as WR Randy Moss rather than spend a draft pick because of the urgency at the wide receiver position.

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans know it may be difficult to get a long-term deal done with DT Albert Haynesworth before he hits the free agent market on March 5, but they're going to give it a shot. "We've had some parameter discussions and there is always a chance," GM Mike Reinfeldt said this afternoon, a day after agent Chad Speck said he'd had some preliminary talks with the team. "We'll have discussions with a number of (pending) free agents. "We'll try to get some things done before the start of free agency. If it makes sense, we'll do it, if not we'll go from there." But an All-Pro in range of free agency typically needs a blockbuster deal in order to sign before the market opens. Most expect the Titans would use their franchise tag to secure Haynesworth if they are unable to strike a deal to keep him. That tag would come without the signing bonus players covet and a one-year salary equal to the average of the top five defensive tackles in the NFL. "I think probably the closer you get, the harder it is to get things done," Reinfeldt said. "But we've still got seven weeks, so we still have a chance."

Chad Johnson said on ESPN's Mike and Mike show Friday that he feels he was mistreated by the Bengals' organization last season.

"I was labeled selfish and a cancer, and it hurt," he said. "Fingers were pointed at me this year. If the team and the organization wants to further itself, I think you need to get rid of the problem. It hurt me. To do me that way and not to have my back. Things were said, and nobody came to my defense." That's pretty close to a trade demand. The situation between Johnson and the Bengals is set up to get ugly this offseason.

Reports: Pacman accused of hitting woman in club
ESPN.com news services
Updated: January 15, 2008, 1:56 PM ET

Suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has been accused of hitting a woman in a strip club in the early-morning hours of Jan. 3

Wanda Jackson, an Atlanta defense attorney, filed a report with Atlanta police against Jones, according to reports out of Georgia and Tennessee. WSB-TV in Atlanta first reported the story on its Web site.

Jones is accused of striking Jackson inside the Body Tap Strip Club. He has neither been arrested nor charged.

According to reports, Jackson is handling a divorce case that involves Jones. On Jan. 3, the two began arguing in the club and Jackson has alleged that Jones punched her in the left eye.

Last April, Jones was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the entire 2007 season for his role in inciting a Las Vegas strip club fight that led to a triple shooting last Feb. 19. The shooting left one man paralyzed.

Jones pleaded no contest in early December to a disorderly conduct charge in that case, agreeing to a year of probation, random drug testing, community service and anger management classes.

In mid-December, the NFL rejected an appeal by the players' union on behalf of Jones to have him reinstated for the final two games of the regular season.

At the time of his suspension, one of the changes Jones told Goodell he intended to make was to stay out of clubs and to avoid situations in which he might be compromised. Goodell has said that he has apprised Jones that he will ultimately be judged by his actions, not his words.

Chow had no aspirations of coaching VY. It's been obvious. It was widely reported after the draft who he wanted and it wasn't VY. I don't blame him. I'm sure he's quite happy. He'll land a job rather quickly.

I think coaching VY would be a complete excercise in frustration. The most mobile QB in the NFL...who also can't throw on the run with any accuracy at all.

Both played under the one-year, restricted free agent tender in 2007. Lilja drew some interest from Kansas City last offseason. Colts offensive linemen have been known to struggle when taken out of their scheme.

Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has turned down the Ravens' head coaching offer and will stay with Dallas in 2008.

Garrett was likely using the Ravens and Falcons, who also offered him their head coaching job, all along as leverage to get more money from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. It's very possible Garrett will make more money than head coach Wade Phillips in 2008, and take on the title of assistant head coach. Jones likely also promised Garrett that he'll eventually succeed Phillips. Garrett's return is good news for all Cowboys skill players.

After listening to Mike Holmgren on KJR radio this morning, Seahawks beat reporter Frank Hughes feels there's "no way" that Shaun Alexander will be back in Seattle next year.

Holmgren noted that when a back is exceptional at one skill, such as Alexander was at running in 2005, it's not as important to be well-rounded, but hinted that Alexander's average running didn't compensate for his poor pass catching or blocking. Holmgren was Alexanders' biggest cheerleader this season, and that he has apparently soured on him makes it even more unlikely Shaun will return.

I predict that this will be a mess for the Cowboys until Phillips is gone, whenever that happens.

Wade will be looking over his shoulder on every decision, and the players will know who really has the power.

Over/Under on Phillips remaining as HC. .. I would set it at 18 games. If they don't make the playoffs, next year he will be gone, and may even if they make the playoffs but no SB next year.

COWBOYS LIKELY TO RE-HIRE HOUCK

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Cowboys most likely will replace former offensive line coach Tony Sparano, now the head coach of the Dolphons, by hiring former Dolphins offensive line coach Hudson Houck, who was fired along with most of the other members of Cam Cameron's staff.

Houck worked in that same capacity with the Cowboys from 1993 through 2001, winning two Super Bowl rings.

The 65-year-old coach has also spent time with the Rams, Seahawks, and Chargers.

AP reports Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre is undecided about returning for another season in the NFL. "I'm not going to rush to make any quick decision, but I think probably it'll be much quicker than it has been in the past -- and people will probably appreciate that," Favre said. "But I'm just going to try to enjoy this season we had as much as I can and try to block this game out. It's going to be very hard. I'm not going to let this game sway my decision one way or another." Favre said he would likely speak to Packers HC Mike McCarthy on Monday, then go home to make his decision.

The Indianapolis Star reports Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay remains optimistic HC Tony Dungy will return as his coach, and anticipates a resolution sometime today. "Nothing has been decided," Irsay said Sunday evening, "but I am hopeful he'll come back." Irsay added he spoke with Dungy over the weekend and stressed, "nothing has been decided. But I've done everything I can to make it possible for him to come back. "Hopefully he will." Dungy, 52, spent the past several days with his family in Tampa, Fla., discussing his future. If he decides to retire after 27 years as an NFL assistant or head coach, the past six as the Colts' coach, Jim Caldwell, 53, will be his replacement. "No question,'' Irsay said, "Jim Caldwell is that guy.'' To that end, Irsay has signed Caldwell, the Colts' assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach, to a multiyear deal that will compensate him accordingly if Dungy opts to retire now or after the 2008 season. It's believed Caldwell's contract approaches one the Pittsburgh Steelers gave HC Mike Tomlin when they named him coach 12 months ago -- approximately $2.5 million per year. Dungy is signed through the 2009 season and earns approximately $5 million annually, which means Irsay will pay about $7.5 million for two coaches if Dungy returns for the '08 season.

He got himself in trouble by going on a Seattle sports talk station and saying he would walk to Seattle if necessary to be in position to take the University of Washington head coaching job. This came when he was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Figuring out the Holmgren situation is a 50-50 deal at the moment. Chargers' Rivers will need second surgery on ailing knee

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3207105

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said Monday that he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee a week ago in order to play in the AFC Championship Game, and that he'll need surgery on the torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same joint.
Rivers made it through Sunday's 21-12 loss to the perfect New England Patriots despite the damage to his knee, which he sustained in an upset win over the Indianapolis Colts a week earlier.
Rivers said he'd like to have surgery as soon as possible on the torn ACL.
"It's gone," he said. "I don't know exactly the details on that. I'll be ready by training camp."
Rivers said he had arthroscopic surgery a week earlier to clean out damaged cartilage.
"It wasn't real extensive, but I mean, really that was the only way I would have had a chance to play by doing that on Monday," he said. "I thought maybe I could come back in the Colts game but it was catching. That's what we did on Monday to give me the chance to play on Sunday."
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson said he's not going to need surgery on the sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, which he originally hurt in the Indianapolis game.
Tomlinson carried only twice Sunday, both in the game's first drive, and caught a short screen pass the following series before retiring to the sideline for good.
Tomlinson said he'll probably sit out the Pro Bowl.

'SKINS INTERVIEW ZORN

Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins have interviewed Jim Zorn for the position of offensive coordinator.

That's presumably bad news for the team's current offensive coordinator, Don Breaux. And for the team's associate head coach-offense, Al Saunders.

The flirtation with Zorn is an apparent precursor to the hiring of Jim Fassel to be the franchise's 27th head coach (counting Joe Gibbs twice). And that's bad news for the team's current defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams.

Zorn currently is the quarterbacks coach in Seattle, where he has worked since 2001.

La Canfora also reports that the Redskins are trying to pry away defensive coordinator Rex Ryan from the Ravens. Despite reports that the Ravens fired their entire coaching staff, the Ravens still hold the rights to Ryan, and could block any attempt by Ryan to interview (or work) elsewhere in a position other than head coach. But, as a practical matter, the Redskins were able to interview Ryan for the position of defensive coordinator while ostensibly interviewing him for the position of head coach.

Assuming that Saunders and Williams are released by the Redskins, they'll certainly be in demand elsewhere.

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for coach Lane Kiffin to resign and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.

Davis has gone so far as to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead. The letter, the source said, was sent to Kiffin two weeks ago.

[+] EnlargeIcon SMI

One season into the job and Lane Kiffin has quite a dilemma on his hands. Raiders owner Al Davis wants him out, but Kiffin's not budging.

Kiffin, who was 4-12 in his first season as coach, has two years remaining on his contract at an estimated $2 million per year.

In the letter sent to Kiffin's legal representatives, Davis stated that only he would have control over his staff and full personnel decisions, sources said. According to a source close to Kiffin, Davis had promised Kiffin when he hired him that he would have more control over staff and personnel matters than recent Raiders coaches. Kiffin was allowed five offensive assistants and to name his own staff when he took the job after the 2006 season.

"I'm not going to comment on anything that has transpired in the past three weeks," Kiffin said from Mobile, Ala., where he and the Raiders staff are coaching the North team in the Under Armour Senior Bowl college all-star game.

The Raiders had no immediate comment.

Kiffn and Davis clashed near the conclusion of their postseason evaluation meetings when Kiffin expressed his desire to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, a source said. Ryan wanted out to join the New York Jets in a similar capacity, but the Raiders released a statement asking for speculation to cease about the defensive coordinator's future.

Just this week at the Senior Bowl, Kiffin and Ryan said their relationship was fine and expected to be coaching the team in 2008. But Davis has not rescinded his request for Kiffin to step down, a source said.

As for Green's candidacy, while team sources said Davis has reached out to the veteran coach, Green said Friday, "I haven't really talked to Al about any coaching job but, really, how many times has my name been mentioned every time something goes on with the Raiders?"

The Raiders will interview James Lofton on Monday for a job, a source said. Oakland is looking for a wide receivers coach and Lofton, who has interviewed in the past to be head coach of the Raiders, was recently fired as San Diego's receivers coach.

With what he's inherited, Kiffin's actually done a pretty good job. He's had more wins than the previous season, and his Raiders have been more competitive in some games they've lost. Their rushing offense ranked among the league leaders. And their team now plays hard every game. That's a huge shift in culture from the previous year. They should stick with Kiffin; they shouldn't have gotten JaMarcus, though. Rumour was, Kiffin wanted Quinn.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the Chargers will play the New Orleans Saints at Wembley Stadium in London on Oct. 26, sources confirmed today. “We want to go,” Chargers president Dean Spanos said. “I'm cautiously optimistic.” Sources said the Chargers have been speaking with the league for more than two months about the game. Spanos is a member of the league's International Committee. This will be the second regular-season NFL game played outside North America. The New York Giants and Miami Dolphins played at Wembley Stadium this past October. The game will be the Chargers' eighth next season, and they will have a bye the next week. New Orleans will be the home team, so the Chargers still will have eight regular-season home games at Qualcomm Stadium.

The Nashville City Paper reports DT Albert Haynesworth is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March, but after exploratory talks with the Titans about a contract extension were opened at the end of Tennessee's season, the lines of communication have been silent of late. “I'm still waiting, and my agent doesn't know anything either,” Haynesworth said of his agent Chad Speck. Titans HC Jeff Fisher indicated earlier in the offseason on his weekly radio show that keeping Haynesworth was a priority. But absent a new deal, the Titans would have to apply the franchise tag, which would assure him of being in the fold as they continue to work toward a new contract. “There's really nothing I can do, if it's what they choose to do. That's all up to them,” Haynesworth said. Haynesworth recorded a career-high six sacks and was an anchor for a defense that finished fifth overall in the NFL this season. During a three-game absence because of a hamstring injury, the Titans lost all three games, nearly causing them to miss the playoffs.

The Miami Herald reports Dolphins head honcho Bill Parcells has implied he wants to keep at least one aging member of his defense, DE Jason Taylor, 33. Taylor indicated Saturday he has received no promises from the Dolphins.

I think there were two reasons that Ray left he had some personal problems that took his mind away from the team. And Mikey wants total control of the team. He want yes men that do things his way and his way only..

Also seems that Ray has slipped from HC to DC to whatever he has been doing the past few years to DB coach. I think that for many years that Kubes might have been doing more for this team than we all wanted to admit. I also think with him hiring Ray that means that Ray might not have been all that much at fault during his time in DEN..

Free agent FS Madieu Williams hopes to stay with the Bengals in 2008.

The Bengals may offer him less than he'd get elsewhere. Williams has elite cover skills, but too often is slowed by injuries. The Bengals should still try to avoid going into 2008 with Marvin White and Chinedum Nduwke as starters.

Report: Owens owes Eagles portion of signing bonus

An arbitrator has ruled for the Philadelphia Eagles in their case against Terrell Owens, meaning the Cowboys wide receiver owes his former team nearly $800,000 in signing bonus money, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

According to the report, league sources said arbitrator Shyam Das ruled last week in favor of the Eagles in the grievance, which was brought on Owens' behalf by the NFL players' union. The union was contesting the team's attempt to recover $1.725 million of the $2.3 million signing bonus the team paid Owens when he signed a seven-year, $49 million contract in 2004.

In 2005, Owens was suspended seven games into the season for "behavior that was disruptive to the team." He was suspended four games without pay, then then told not to return for the remaining five games of the season.

The four-game suspension cost Owens $764,704. And when Owens and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not reply to a letter requesting Owens return his signing bonus, the team garnished his last five paychecks, totalling $955,880, the Inquirer reported.

With the arbitration ruling, Owens owes the team another $769,120 to complete the $1.725 million signing-bonus repayment, according to the report. That money will be credited to the Eagles' salary cap for 2008.

Rosenhaus said Monday night that he was unaware of the ruling and declined comment, the Inquirer reported.

All totaled, Owens' conduct in 2005 cost him $2.49 million, according to the report

Kiffin would probably do better with Quinn. This scenario is an example of two people being wildly attracted to each other and getting married before finding out the true person. Kiffin was a good hire. Not great, but good. He will be a great coach in about 5 years once he (if he) learns from the mistakes he does, and he has made plenty.

I don't blame him with wanting to fire Rob Ryan. Other than the mirage-laced 2006 season, the defense under his watch has not been very good. But that goes back to Al Davis who drafted more speed-lack-of-skill defensive backs than defensive tackes to stop the run and a defensive end opposite Burgess. At least he got the linebackers right.

And for those who are surprised Al Davis is pulling this stunt, then you don't know Al Davis. Kiffin was seeking college jobs and to Al Davis, that's like sleeping with someone else. Loyalty is huge with him. He still employes no-name players from the 60s to do his lawn. He pays for their medical bills if they can't. He is EXTREMELY loyal to anyone who puts on the Silver and Black, even if it was for one day, as long as they are loyal to him during their tenure as a Raider. It's such a shame he doesn't use that passion to realize his own flaws and help his team.

If the Chiefs see a franchise QB in April's draft, they will consider going that route with their early first round pick.

The Chiefs' preference is to develop their own franchise QB as opposed to reaching outside the organization. They persist in believing that Brodie Croyle could have a promising future, but much will depend on the draft grade of Matt Ryan.

WILLIAMS INTERVIEWS WITH JAGS

Former Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams became a head coach in Buffalo based on his performance as defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans.

Now, Williams could be taking that same position with one of the Titans' biggest rivals.

According to the Florida Times-Union, Williams interviewed with the Jaguars on Tuesday for the position created when defensive coordinator Mike Smith was hired to become the new head coach of the Falcons.

"Gregg was here," Del Rio said. "I will provide more info once the staff is completed."

The Times-Union points out that Jacksonville linebackers coach Mark Duffner could be promoted. If not, Williams could get the job.

Williams recently was fired by the Redskins after multiple interviews for the head-coaching job there resulted in no offer to replace Joe Gibbs.

He's blinded by his own brilliance. By that I mean that he knows what he did in the past an expects that he can do it again. He is far from senile. If he was senile, he wouldn't be firing his coach. He'd ask him what the hell he was doing in his living room when they are actually in the bathroom. Then he'd ask what the hell the bathroom was doing in his living room.

His problem is that he wants to go 12-4 every year HIS WAY. Is there anything wrong with that? No. What his problem is, is that he is not rational in how to get there. He is not patient. He knows more about the game of football than ALL owners, every last one of them. He knows the plays, the players, the college players (well, those who run under 4.3) and every facet of the game. 10 win seasons should be a breeze for him with the knowledge he has. He knows everything, even more than Spygate to gather. He doesn't apply proper wisdom to that knowledge, otherwise he'd have the same success that he did up until 1996 and briefly in the early part of this decade.

Now nobody has mentioned this and I myself just realized it, but it mirrors Shanahan's exit in 1989. Shanahan was fired for several reasons but one of the major reasons was that he wanted to fire Art Shell. Shell was a Davis favorite so they clashed heads. With the Kiffin situation, Davis loves Rob Ryan for whatever reason, so we all know who has always had control of the coaching staff. I doubt that any organization has or has had more former players as coaches or coordinators on their team than the Raiders, even so much that they overlook a better candidate at the position. Shanahan also had the bad luck of following four consecutive successful head coaches, incuding Davis, who, combined in 25 years, had three losing seasons. But like I said, the Shell issue enflamed that stat in Davis' head.

It's almost like Davis had Kiffin at attention, with Amy Trask beating the drums, Davis marching, turns about face and strips Kiffin of his medals one by one. Perhaps a glove to each cheek as well.

And the dumb thing about this is that the offense wasn't the biggest problem. It was the defense. So why keep a guy who's best season was a mirage over the biggest hope the franchise has? It's the ego. You'd think Davis learned from the Marcus Allen situation... well, he managed to get Bo Jackson so he probably thinks he can find a replacement. I hope he keeps Kiffin because it will be fun to watch the drama unfold.

your insight to al davis is great I had heard part of that before..

He had at one time a great mind and had the NFL on it ear with the Charlie Finley type BS he kept pulling..

If he would hire someone and trust them to do their job without interfering like he did with Mikey and then with John Gruden that teams just might be the best in the league..

But he seems to find someone that is good and pulls the rug out from under them or allows the loyalty to his players and vice versa to back stab the coach.. As long as he is alive the franchise is doomed to flounder.. No one good will work for him because he has screwed the pooch 3 or 4 time to often..

Al Davis still has a great football mind, but his problem is something I notice with a lot of old folks; their pride and ego can blind them to the actual situation. They see and hear only what they want to. You're right, it's not senility, but it is a pretty skewed view of the way things actually are.

By the way, why did he get rid of Gruden? That was a pretty good Raider team.

Quoting a league source, Pro Football Talk reports that the Bengals would rather sit Chad Johnson than trade him.

PFT compares the situation to the Terrell Owens fiasco in Philadelphia. Johnson has basically spent Super Bowl week suggesting he be traded to almost any team in the league. The behavior could certainly be classified as "detrimental to the team," and ultimately merit punishment. "[President] Mike Brown won’t trade him under any circumstances," PFT's source said. "They will let him sit and rot."

HASSELBECK SAYS GIANTS DON'T NEED SHOCKEY

Former Giants quarterback Timm Hasselbeck has commented on the absence of tight end Jeremy Shockey from the team.

"People there are relieved he's not around. There's this big stink about he's on injured reserve," he said. "How come he's not on the sideline supporting his team? Let me tell you something, they don't want him there.

"They're going to say all the right things, 'Oh yeah, we'd love to have him around' and all that stuff because he's their teammate, he's under contract next year and you can't do that," he said. "But when they're talking to people and it's not necessarily being reported they don't want him around. He's a distraction.

"Eli [Manning] is playing better without him because he doesn't feel like he has to force the ball to him," said Hasselbeck. "I was in the offensive meetings where they said 'Listen, we need to get the ball to Jeremy early to keep him involved so he doesn't start going crazy.' Any time you have to start forcing the football to somebody to keep them happy it's not good and bad things happen."

The Cleveland Plain Dealer suggests that the Ravens could be interested in re-acquiring restricted free agent Derek Anderson this offseason.

Anderson was originally a Ravens draft pick. Brian Billick wasn't in the business of admitting mistakes, but now that he's gone, pursuing Anderson may be a possibility. Anderson knows new coordinator Cam Cameron's offense, having learned it from Cameron disciple Rob Chudzinski in Cleveland. We can't imagine the Ravens giving up first- and third-round draft picks to sign Anderson after he's tendered, but a trade could happen.
