Of course he should. Throw in the fact he did it as an undrafted free-agent.

It will be tough... I still don't understand why Art Monk hasn't been inducted, so I find it hard for Rod Smith to get in.

No brainer. But Canton is fickle so I'm not holding my breath.

Rod Smith deserves to be in the HOF. Those are good numbers for a drafted player, for an undrafted player they are spectacular. Numbers + SB rings = HOF....

I love Rod Smith, but it is a no brainer that he DOES NOT belong in the Hall of Fame.

Longevity and draft status do NOT qualify you for the Hall. Being undrafted has nothing to do with it. As far as the HoF is concerned you are either Great or you are not Great.

Art Monk should possibly be in the HoF, but 940 catches over 15 years in the league, one year with 100+ catches, he is borderline.

You have to be a dominant player in your era, and Rod Smith was never a absolute game changer. Only made 3 pro bowls and the offense ran through Elway and Davis.

Might make it as a senior candidate 30 years from now, but does not qualify today.

Gradishar is more deserving of than Rod Smith and he can't even get in.

Make this a poll, Top...

The answer is hell, yes, BTW...

The numbers have always been rather mute if they went with a player associated with the Broncos. Take Gradishar as a prime example.

Several others like "Tombstone" Jackson (I love that name) and Floyd Little seemingly haven't even recieved serious consideration.

I think that Rod is more than deserving but I can't really see it happening.

He absolutely is worthy of it but will it happen I don't know.

Yes, but not until Art Monk gets in. I think Smith has a fair shot but it will take him awhile. The only real HoF lock on Denver is Champ Bailey. Lynch will go because of his buc career and Elam has a shot too.

Rod's numbers are almost a mirror image of Micheal Irvin's and are twice what Lynn Swan has ... two guys in the HOFamous people ...

That said he definitely has the credentials to get in and should. But that actually happening is the big question ... WILL Rod Smith be inducted into the HOF ...

The Hall of Fame is almost as big of a joke as the Pro Bowl.

I could well be wrong but I would bet that Shannon Sharpe will get into the Hall. Not only are his stats outstanding for the TE position but he is well known and has 3 rings from two different teams.

Hmmm . . . how much of Rod Smith's career did you watch . . . live? I've
seen the majority of Broncos games, and you will not persuade me that
he was not a "game changer." I guess some of those 80-yard receptions
and drive-sustaining crossing patterns and come-back patterns must have
influenced me a lot.

Moreover, while he probably will not get into the HOF . . . because he is a
Denver Bronco . . . there are some who are already there, whose numbers
are no better, and some whose numbers aren't as good, to wit (picked at
random):

Michael Irvin 750 career receptions for 11,904 yards, 65 TDs

Charlie Joyner 750 catches, 12,146 yards, 65 TDs

Fred Biletnikoff Career record: 589 receptions, 8,974 yards, 76 TDs

Don Maynard 633 receptions, 11,834 yards, , 88 TDs

Lynn Swann 336 receptions, 5,462 yards, 51 touchdowns

In addition, most of these guys could not block like Smith did.

Along with Dean, I don't expect that to happen. It didn't happen for Floyd
Little, Randy Gradishar, or Karl Mecklenberg, so why should hit happen for
Rod Smith? After all, he's a Denver Bronco.

Ring of Fame... easy.
Hall of Fame... throw in the anti-Denver bias... doubt it.

Rod Smith was one of the most consistent, business-like, ever prevalant players in the league in his prime, but I don't know if he ever truly dominated the league like other WRs did. True, he split receptions with Eddy Mac, and by the Michael Irvin-Troy Aikman logic, he fits as John Elway's go-to-guy, but I don't know.

It sucks that Canton refuses to look at players playing over 5,000 feet above sea level, and the fact that Rod was a quiet guy a la Marvin Harrison really hurts him, which seems to contradict logic. Sure, he's great in comparison with other undrafted players and Broncos players, but the HOF compares players to history, though not equally. So the answer is he should be, but won't.

While I think that Rod should be a member of the HOF, the attachment you posted doesnt really help his cause.

You are trying to show reasons why he should be in the HOF, but the article just shows his numbers against other non-drafted players and other non-HOF Bronco's. Now if you want to start a new non-drafted HOF or a Bronco HOF, then yes, you proved your point.

Post something that shows Rod's stats against other HOF WR's, then you will get the correct type of comparison. I think that would be interesting, myself.

Yea, a few years ago, I thought he needed two or three more really good years to have a shot, and then last year was way down and this one lost to injury. The only way he gets in now is if they take into consideration the 'greatest undrafted free agent WR" aspect of his career.

Maybe. I'd put Lionel Taylor in before Rod Smith simply because Taylor was a pioneer, something the NFL usually awards, yet somehow doesn't in Taylor's case. Go figure. If any Bronco needs to be in the HoF, it is Randy Gradishar. Hands down. You don't finish a 10-year career with 2,000+ tackles and the leader of one of the 1970's top three D's (along with the Steelers and Dallas) and not make it into the Hall unless... wait, you played for Denver

I wish Rod Smith would get in, but let's be real here. Denver has been completely shafted when it comes to the Hall, period. The crappiest franchises in NFL history have more players in the HoF than we do. The Cardinals have something like eight players in the HoF, yet have won, what, one playoff game in the last thirty years? Denver is one of the winningest teams in NFL history, has been to six SuperBowls, and only has one freakin' player in the Hall. How that happens is beyond me, but unless all those voters suddenly remember that Denver is historically an equal to Dallas, San Francisco, Steelers, Miami, etc. I don't expect Rod Smith, nor any other Bronco to get in for awhile once Sharpe gets inducted (which should should be a shoe-in, but then again Randy Gradishar should've been a shoe-in).

The Oklahoma State University Cowboys have more players in the NFL Hall of Fame than do the Denver Broncos. . .and OSU's football team isn't a perennial powerhouse by any means.

There is no reason or excuse why ANY NFL franchise should have such a dearth of inductees. .. but I guess that's a post for another thread, and a subject that probably won't ever be resolved in our favor.

Great post! :salute: Whether he was undrafted or not should not be part of the criteria. Also, why are his stats being compared to other Bronco players instead of Hall of Fame players?

Rod Smith definitely belongs in the Bronco's Ring of Fame though.

Looking at his numbers whether drafted or undrafted and he should get in easily, yet I am surprised Monk isn't in there either. You never know when it comes to those HOF people and whatever they have against this organization. Hopefully a Bronco will get in next year and make things easier for Rod. Like all the other Broncos that should be in the HOF, if Rod doesn't get in then these fools obviously don't know anything about football.

I think he absolutely belongs there. So do Gradishar, Mecklenberg, Louis Wright, Zimmerman, Sharpe (he'll get in anyway) and TD.

The HOF is a crock of crap IMO. Terry freakin Bradshaw and Lynn Swann do not belong there. Mikchael Irvin does not belong there (Monk does, though). The fact that Elway is our only inductee is shameful.

I believe Rod should be in the HOF and I think other things need to go into play besides just stats. SB rings...only one behing Irvin and being an undrafted FA.

I hate to just rely on stats alone, even though his are great, because look at Keenan Mccardel...does he belong in the HOF based off of his stats??
