After looking at how the Chargers tried to attack the Broncos defense in the passing game, it's clear a pattern is developing.

Like Tony Romo and Tom Brady, San Diego's Philip Rivers tried his luck against Champ Bailey early on Monday night. Some of that because Vincent Jackson lined up much of the time on the offensive right, which put him with Bailey and some because Bailey was also the single coverage, which is where a quarterback is trained to go.

The Chargers, like the Patriots and Cowboys, did not have much luck attacking the eight-time Pro Bowl selection, who is on his game and enjoying the work.

So they then either tried to work to Andre' Goodman's side or, late in the game, tried moving Jackson to Goodman's side and take their shot.

But Goodman continues to be one of the real productive signings in free agency anywhere in the league. He has been consistent in coverage and plays with confidence alongside Bailey, which is no small feat and not something other players have been able to do.

That said, however, the Steelers and Ravens, with two of the better slot receivers in the league in Hines Ward and Derrick Mason, figure to challenge the Broncos some in the middle of the field.

That will put the fifth defensive back — which had been Jack Williams or Alphonso Smith until Williams got hurt Monday night — on the hot seat. Both Mason and Ward are savvy guys in traffic and know all of the tricks to get themselves free.

The Broncos will likely have to drop down some safety help inside, which would take another player out of either run support or the pass rush on certain occasions.

The Patriots are the only team thus far to work the inside effectively, putting up 11 completions to players who played primarily in the slot. The wrinkle the Ravens and Steelers have is their primary receivers do their best work there.

Bailey and even Bly were smoked too often the last two years because 1- They were playing too far ahead of opposing wideouts because of Slowik's incompetence and lack of adjustments, and 2- the Denver defense gave QBs all day to just sit back and chuck it.

Champ's presence alone will make any CB opposite him play 10x better.
