North Carolina G Frasor done for season with torn ligament

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina junior Bobby Frasor tore a ligament in his left knee and will need surgery, keeping him sidelined for the rest of the season.

Frasor tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the top-ranked Tar Heels' win over Nevada on Thursday night. The school said tests performed Friday morning found no additional damage to the knee.

The injury robs North Carolina (12-0) of a versatile veteran who can play either guard position. Coach Roy Williams said Frasor will need surgery, which is expected to be performed in the coming weeks.

Frasor stole the ball twice in the backcourt shortly before the injury in the second half, helping him earn the team's award for top defensive player for the fifth time this season.

He averaged 3.0 points before the injury.

Georgetown: Despite not looking very good in the last 25 minutes against Memphis, this team has some championship ingredients to work with: Final Four experience. Roy Hibbert, Jonathan Wallace, Jesse Sapp and Dajuan Summers all started on last year's team. And Ewing Jr., Rivers, and Macklin played significant minutes. Experienced and well-rounded guards in Wallace and Sapp. And those two are getting help from freshmen Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. A proven big man in Hibbert who is much better than he played last week. And Summers is a versatile forward who causes matchup problems for most teams. This team is solid if not spectacular on both ends of the floor. Execution and perimeter shooting are team strengths and there is enough athleticism and depth to compete with other elite teams. The rebounding should be better for a team with its size, and I think the offensive output can improve as well. Don't be too quick to dismiss Georgetown after a loss on the road to an elite team.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have terrific perimeter players in Mario Chalmers, Sherron Collins, Russell Robinson and Brandon Rush. All can get their own shot and create for teammates. They also are solid defenders. I think the experience, and versatility of this group is the strength of this team. Up front, Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun and Cole Aldrich are formidable. Arthur is one of the premiere inside players in the Big 12, and Jackson produces points, rebounds and defense at a high rate, too. Kaun has improved markedly as a finisher inside. Five players average double figures, and a very solid eight-man rotation gives Bill Self the ability to have his team sustain offensive and defensive pressure for 40 minutes.

Memphis: The Tigers are an impressive looking team. Talented, deep, fast, versatile, well coached and capable of Saran Wrap defense when focused. The ball pressure and intensity on defense in the second half against Georgetown led to the double digit win. Points can come in bunches and from a lot of different players. Chris Douglas Roberts is a lethal go-to guy, and Robert Dozier is a talented scorer as well. Freshman point guard Derrick Rose is a unique combination of size, skill and speed. A number of big guys led by Joey Dorsey supply rebounding and shot-blocking. This team is most effective when playing an up-tempo game, because that allows for maximum use of its depth and athleticism. But I think this team can handle a slow-paced game, too. Its defense will always give it a chance for a game-changing spurt. The Tigers have the spurtability that could lead them to San Antonio.

North Carolina: There don't appear to be any glaring weaknesses with the Tar Heels. There is plenty of size and athleticism up front and strong perimeter play, too. Roy Williams has a very solid nine-player rotation. North Carolina does a lot of things well, but what it does best is play fast break basketball. After defensive stops, turnovers, or even made baskets, very few teams can match how quickly and how often the Tar Heels get good shots. Four players average double figures led by All-American Tyler Hansbrough. Wayne Ellington, Danny Green and Ty Lawson are the other double-figure scorers. Lawson runs the show superbly and is an improved scorer. It appears that the perimeter defense has improved and that the turnovers are down from last season. And with solid rebounding, that means the fast break can sizzle, which is a joy to watch. If forced into a half-court game, the presence of Hansbrough, along with Deon Thompson and Alex Stepheson, can cause trouble for opponents. Along with Memphis, they look to be the most Final Four ready if April were now.

UCLA: With key players back from teams that have played in the past two Final Fours and the addition of Kevin Love, the Bruins are a team that could win it all. Love provides a go-to presence inside with his scoring and passing that will earn his team free throws and open shots late in games. All-American point guard Darren Collison rounding into top form after missing six games with a knee injury is significant heading into conference play. His speed and tenacity are major weapons on offense and defense. I think this team is potentially better and more balanced offensively than Ben Howland's past two teams. With Love inside, Josh Shipp and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute appearing healthy and Russell Westbrook in the starting lineup, I expect UCLA will be able to score a little easier than in the past. That bodes well looking ahead because the defense looks to be as tough and stingy as ever. The bench could use some fortifying, but it shouldn't have to do much.

Others flirting with elite status:

Duke: Not much beef inside, but plenty of "D" and 3s.

Michigan State: The Spartans are deep and talented but rely on three very good freshmen and need a third double-figure scorer.

Pittsburgh: Can Dejuan Blair handle the load in the paint all season? How will the loss of Mike Cook affect the Panthers?

Washington State: Experienced, efficient and excellent on defense. Can the Cougars score easily enough?

Beasley performed badly against Xavier in borrowed shoes
By HOWARD RICHMAN
The Kansas City Star

Maybe the size 17s will be auctioned for charity or go on e-Bay. But one place they probably won’t end up is in Michael Beasley’s closet.

“I don’t know what we’ll do with the shoes,” Kansas State men’s basketball director of operations Andy Assaley said Thursday. “Burn them. Destroy them. Who knows?”

Beasley, the freshman standout at K-State, had perhaps the most unproductive game of his life wearing “the shoes” Monday in the Wildcats’ 103-77 loss against Xavier in Cincinnati. Beasley can’t recall a game, at any level, in which he recorded only one basket. And that didn’t occur until just 35 seconds remained.

“The shoes don’t make the man. The man makes the shoes,” said Beasley, who finished with five points..

Now, about those shoes …

Beasley ripped his regular pair Sunday at practice in Cincinnati while making a cut on the court, according to Assaley.

In need of size 17s (Cincinnati retailers didn’t have any when Assaley called them), he phoned Nike, but nobody could be reached. The next call had a Bob Huggins connection. Former University of Cincinnati basketball director of operations Corey Brinn worked under Huggins there before Huggins came to K-State.

He had a pair. But it wasn’t that simple. Assaley first contacted K-State assistant athletic director of compliance David Flores to make certain the Wildcats followed the rules in acquiring the shoes.

“We had to buy the shoes,” said Assaley, noting a price of $115.

There was one problem, however. They had the Cincinnati logo and were trimmed in black and red, the Bearcats’ colors. Beasley placed tape over the logo.

The shoes formerly belonged to Asrangue Souleymane, who played on Huggins’ last team at Cincinnati in 2004-05. Souleymane, like Beasley, wore No. 30.

Souleymane scored four points the entire season.

“Mike put up Souleymane numbers,” Assaley said.

Beasley, who’ll be in more familiar shoes Monday when the Wildcats play Savannah State, said: “I just couldn’t get into it (the game). After the first two calls (he got called for charging his first possession and whistled for traveling on the next), it was pretty much downhill from there. But it wasn’t because of the shoes.”

Kansas and Memphis are just scary good. UNC might be ranked #1 right now, but I don't think they are as good as Kansas or Memphis.

I would agree in terms of talent, UNC might not have as much but as a team they are very capable. The ACC should be interesting and give the Tar Heels some fits. Its hard to see Mem or Kan running into to many bumps on the road to selection day.

As for my Lobos they overcame a 16 point halftime deficit to win in double OT in WYO, a place they have not won in for a long long time. Alford has brought an edge to this team, they would have rolled over in the past years but have fought hard and there last 2 games have been OT victories.

Not the biggest team in conference but if they can put together a couple more road wins they should make noise come conferece championship time. BYU still the head of the class at the moment, SDSU, Utah, UNLV, all have teams that can be solid and are always a hard game.

Thats my little Lobo/Mt. West blurb for the moment.

Oklahoma State has to be one of the hardest places to play at...that crowd just goes friggin' nuts, and they are right on top of the court. I think it's that small front section, and then the wall...it gets the fans that are a little higher up, a little closer to the floor...That place just go friggin' nuts. I've seen some serious collapses in that place.

OK...So kentucky is 8-9 w/ HUGE wins over at the time #12 Vandy and #3/5 Tennessee in the past 10 days. They seem to be getting it together of late and can make a run. Of course, they are no legit contender, but they can get a crack at the tourney.

W/ 12 games to go, how many would they have to win to have a legit shot at the NCAA Tournament? They play all SEC the rest of the way plus the SEC tournament.

I'm thinking 9-3 plus a win in the SEC toruney locks em in. that puts em at 18-12 overall w/ multiple wins vs top 15 opponents.

All the pressures on K-State in Wednesdays Sunflower Showdown

By JASON WHITLOCK

The weird thing about Wednesday’s Sunflower basketball showdown is that absolutely all the pressure is on the underdog Kansas State Wildcats.
A Kansas loss means little. If the second-ranked Jayhawks fall in the polls, it won’t be very far, maybe to No. 3 or 4. They’ll remain on pace for an NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed, and stay the heavy favorite to win the Big 12 Conference. In terms of in-state bragging rights, the end of KU’s Manhattan winning streak won’t diminish the Jayhawks’ superiority or signal a turn in momentum.
Nope. Every bit of pressure resides in Manhattan. The whole campus will be on trial Wednesday night.
There are four ways to justify the Bob Huggins/Michael Beasley/Bill Walker, one-and-done experiment: 1. A home victory over the Jayhawks; 2. An NCAA Tournament run that reaches the Final Four; 3. Recruiting classes in 2008 and 2009 that allow the Wildcats to become a consistent postseason tourney team; 4. A miracle second season from Beasley.
OK, No. 4 ain’t happening. Beasley is a can’t-miss NBA prospect, the most NBA-ready college player since Carmelo Anthony. Beasley (and Walker) have seats reserved on the same midnight train that escorted Huggins to West Virginia after a year of carousing in Aggieville.
No. 3 is a long shot, unless the Cats plan on making it a habit of giving AAU coaches jobs and moving families to the Little Apple. I mean, seriously, is K-State really willing to do what Kansas does to remain elite?
No. 2 is a stretch, too. K-State’s guards are average, its coaching staff is unproven, and it was just one month ago that Xavier spayed and neutered the Wildcats by 26 points. The Cats are just as capable of getting run as making a run in the tournament.
So we’re left with Wednesday night, a predetermined one-night stand. Failure to perform will devastate K-State faithful and embarrass the men who hatched the plan to rent Huggins, Beasley and Walker.
Yeah, Jon Wefald and Tim Weiser will have tight cheeks on Wednesday. So will Frank Martin and Dalonte Hill, the primary benefactor$ of Huggins’ escape. Wefald and Weiser took a major risk resurrecting Huggins. That blew up. Wefald and Weiser doubled their risk promoting Martin and Hill just to satisfy two NBA exchange students for a few semesters. Rather than build a program, K-State bought a couple of scratch-off tickets. We’re about to see what’s in the first box.
Athletes are fond of saying that “pressure busts pipes.” Can the Cats handle the pressure?
We’re talking about a coaching staff and roster with no big-game experience. You know how I feel about Beasley. He could score 50 Wednesday night. He was made for the big show. This game is his best shot at claiming player of the year. He’s not getting Kevin Durant-like hype because he plays for Kansas State. That could all change Wednesday. If he takes down the Jayhawks with a remarkable performance, people will start buzzing.
What we don’t know is what Beasley’s supporting cast will do. Does Walker see Wednesday night as his opportunity to launch himself into the draft lottery by undressing preseason All-American Brandon Rush?
And you never know who else on K-State’s roster sees this game as the culmination or beginning of his Hoop Dream.
Frank Martin has quite a temper. Surely he’s tired of hearing about how he can’t coach and doesn’t deserve this job. He could melt. He could over-coach.
Meanwhile, this game is nothing to Bill Self and his players. Whenever they hit the road, they walk into an extremely hostile arena.
The conventional wisdom is that Kansas’ biggest advantage is its backcourt. No doubt Rush, Mario Chalmers, Russell Robinson and Sherron Collins give KU a nice leg up. But experience will be KU’s best ally Wednesday night.
They’re going to embrace this challenge. They’re glad the Wildcats will take the court with players who can compete. It gets old hearing about a rivalry that doesn’t exist on the court. It’s a rare chance to play K-State in a game that matters.
The Jayhawks will be ready. Besides Beasley, will anyone wearing purple?

I would not be surprised AT ALL if KSU wins at home. They are a decent team. There will be more fans there than ever (less KU fans than years prior). KSU is on fire right now...Bill Pisser Walker is making threes like crazy.

However, overall, beating Kansas might make them feel great, but in the long run it just means that Kansas has 1 loss.

MU’s Anderson says concern is with Hannah’s health
By MIKE DeARMOND
The Kansas City Star

When Missouri basketball coach Mike Anderson received a telephone call hours before dawn on Sunday, he knew it was going to be bad news.

But then, as now, Anderson said on Monday, his primary concern is the well-being of senior guard Stefhon Hannah, not the circumstances of how Hannah suffered a fractured jaw at a Columbia night club.

“Stef’s doing well,” Anderson said after visiting with Hannah at University Hospital, where Hannah has been upgraded from “serious” to “good” condition. “Right now that’s the most important thing. That’s where my thoughts are.

“I don’t know what took place.”

Hannah, 22, was injured in a disturbance at the Athena Night Club in Columbia to which Columbia police were called at 1:07 a.m. Sunday. Police told The Star that none of the 20 to 30 people at the club gave them substantial information about the incident, nor did Hannah.

MU released a statement Sunday night saying Hannah would likely be out four to six weeks, but that statement did not address directly what actions might be taken regarding Anderson’s “no tolerance” policy regarding such incidents.

On Monday morning, during his weekly stint on the Big 12 Conference weekly media call, Anderson said he was still gathering information and would not elaborate on how his “no tolerance” policy might come into play should Hannah be able to come back sooner than expected. And he rebuffed a question about whether Hannah was the only MU basketball player at Athena during the incident.

“You’ve got the information that we’re talking about,” Anderson said.

“We’ve got team rules, regulations and curfews, all in effect.”

That “no tolerance” policy was put in place by Anderson after a July, 2007, incident when MU player DeMarre Carroll was shot in the ankle trying to break up a fight at the Tropicana Bar in Columbia that Carroll said involved teammates.

Another player, Darryl Butterfield, was suspended for the team’s Black & Gold Scrimmage and the first exhibition game after he pled guilty to peace disturbance, a charge that was pled down from suspicion of domestic assault.

Also during the summer, Kalen Grimes was dismissed from the team after he was arrested for striking a man with the butt of a shotgun in an incident in St. Louis.

“We’ve dealt with those situations and each situation was independent; it was different in each situation,” Anderson said. “That’s how you deal with it.”

Anderson would not characterize that string of incidents as indicative of a trend within his basketball program, on its second year at MU.

“I don’t consider it a problem,” Anderson said.

“To me it’s a culture that’s taking place and you’ve got to clean it up. It’s as simple as that.”

Anderson added that the perception of the program might now match his own.

“There’s a concern what the perception is,” Anderson said. “But I want people to understand that I think we’re going, we’re moving, in the right direction. And I know that for a fact.”

Keon Lawrence, Anderson said, would likely take Hannah’s place at point guard in the Tigers’ game against Nebraska on Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. That game, the school announced on Monday, will be televised on a tape-delay basis by Metro Sports in the Kansas City area (starting at 8:30 p.m.) and Fox Sports Midwest elsewhere in the state.

Hannah continues to recuperate from surgery performed Sunday at University Hospital. An MU official indicated the movement of Hannah’s jaw was currently restricted to the point that it was nearly shut.

Anderson just hopes he does not receive another of those wee-hours telephone calls.

“You get a call like that, it takes a little bit out of you,” Anderson said. “What went wrong? Again, something happened and you have to deal with it. It’s the reality of the world we live in.

“When you get a call late at night, in the morning, as a coach you know it’s something that ain’t very good.”

K-State suspends associate head coach after arrest

MANHATTAN, Kan. | Kansas State associate men’s basketball coach Dalonte Hill, arrested early Thursday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, will be suspended Saturday when the No. 22 Wildcats play at Missouri, the school announced.

“I want to apologize for this incident,” Hill said in a prepared statement. “I am embarrassed for the attention this has brought to our program. I regret this situation taking away any attention from our team’s accomplishments and from our preparation for Saturday’s game with Missouri.”

Hill was pulled over for a routine check around 2 a.m. on McCall Road, according to Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat. That was just hours after No. 22 Kansas State upset No. 2 Kansas 84-75 at Bramlage Coliseum.

“During a stop, a deputy developed probable cause to believe he (Hill) was under the influence,” Riat said.

Hill was later released after posting $500 bond. Pottawatomie County attorney Sherri Schuck said she had not yet reviewed Hill’s case, and didn’t expect to until today or next week. Once she has done that, it will be up to her whether charges will be filed.

K-State athletic director Tim Weiser said: “Obviously, this is a matter which we view very seriously. We have high expectations for all of our employees and will monitor the situation closely.”

Hill’s arrest comes on the heels of Wednesday’s announcement that junior forward Andre Gilbert was suspended indefinitely for undisclosed reasons.

Horton faces third-degree misdemeanor assault charge

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Missouri guard Jason Horton was arrested Friday on an assault charge connected to a weekend brawl that left his teammate with a broken jaw.

The 21-year-old Horton faces a charge of third-degree misdemeanor assault on an unidentified 26-year-old man in connection with the early-morning fight at the Athena nightclub in downtown Columbia.

The Jan. 27 incident left senior Stefhon Hannah, the Tigers' leading scorer the past two seasons, with a broken jaw. Hannah is out at least one month and could miss the rest of the season.

Horton was arrested at his off-campus apartment Friday afternoon, taken to police headquarters and released on a summons to appear in court.

In addition to the victim, another witness identified Horton as punching the victim "multiple times" in the face, Capt. Brad Nelson, investigative commander for the Columbia Police Department, said. Horton was not defending Hannah or any of his other teammates, Nelson said.

Horton, a senior, is one of five players suspended indefinitely by coach Mike Anderson for violating curfew and a team rule against visiting certain bars and nightclubs.

Forwards Marshall Brown, Darryl Butterfield and Leo Lyons were also suspended, as was Hannah, who remains in his hometown of Chicago as he recovers from surgery.

Playing with six scholarship players and two walk-ons, Missouri (12-9, 2-4 Big 12) lost 66-62 to Nebraska on Wednesday. The Tigers face Kansas State (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) in a home game Saturday.

After the loss to Nebraska, which had been winless in conference play, Anderson said he would reconsider whether to extend the player suspensions. But that was before Horton's arrest.

A team spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

"There are probably going to be additional arrests," said Nelson, who added the investigation continues.

According to police, the initial investigation was hindered by the reluctance of the estimated 20 to 30 people gathered outside the nightclub to cooperate. Investigators have since spoken to several witnesses, Nelson said, including Brown, Butterfield and Lyons.

They have not interviewed Hannah other than a brief conversation in the hospital.

"We certainly want to speak with him again," Nelson said.

He added Hannah and Horton's three teammates were not involved in any physical disturbance.

"As far as the actual assault and disturbance, they didn't have any involvement," Nelson said.

The fight happened just hours after the Tigers returned from a 66-62 victory at Colorado, the team's first road win this season.

The nightclub altercation is the latest in a series of off-court incidents involving Missouri players since Anderson was hired less than two years ago.

Butterfield was suspended -- for one exhibition game -- after an arrest for punching a former girlfriend. He pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence and six months' probation when the charge was downgraded to peace disturbance.

DeMarre Carroll, Anderson's nephew, was shot in the ankle outside a downtown club while trying to break up a fight. Mike Anderson Jr., the coach's son and a backup guard, was arrested for DUI last year and suspended for a game.

And Kalen Grimes, the school's leading rebounder and starting center last season, was dismissed from the team after being arrested for hitting a man in the face with the butt of a shotgun in St. Louis in July.

UCLA...couple of reasons.

A.) Pac-10 is tough, and as they get healthy they will get better.

B.) Inside Presence. The Tigers rely on speed and outside shooting. Memphis doesn't have the inside guys that UCLA has...Mbah a Moute, Love, Shipp and Aboya will absolutely wear down Memphis, and Collison is every bit the stud that Rose is, plus Collison has the experience and Rose doesn't.

C.) Tough defense. The Bruins have the speed to attack the Tigers' offense more so than any other team in the country. Their half-court offense tonight against Arizona disrupted some really good scorers.

With that said, College Basketball is about guard play, and the three Memphis guards are the best in college basketball.

Oh, and I don't think Arizona would be undefeated, because they lost to Memphis.

You know what I mean.......I fully expect them to go undefeated....although, the Mighty UTEP almost ended that.

Kansas has 4 guards to compete with Memphis. Although they run a totally different style of offense and therefore dont light up the scoreboard like Memphis guards.....KUs guards do actually play defense and very good defense at that.
Texas has Augustine and Abrams that are both as good as any guards in the NCAA.

Your problem is that you are a total flavor of the week guy Mo.

And, by the way, I have thought UCLA is the best team in the NCAA all year long.

I would almost be willing to give up a body part for some good quality College Basketball at the University Of South Carolina but it's not even close to that at the time. Devon Downey has brung a much needed spark here and is the quickest Point Guard i've seen here since Melvin Watson some 5 or more years ago.

Since Dave Odom said he's retiring after this Season, Eric Hyman the Athletics Director will be getting on his hands and knees to get Alex English to take the job. It does'nt look like that's going to happen. English says he's perfectly happy Coaching in the NBA but would listen to anything the University had to say or offer.

Recruiting has been the biggest downfall to good Basketball here and will be until someone can come here and successfully do it 'in State'.

The talent that leaves this State to play College Basketball elsewhere is ridiculous ...
