View Full Version : Merriman says Broncos were disrespectful

“There’s a new persona about this team,” said four-year Denver veteran tight end Tony Scheffler (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9647), who had to be held back from San Diego linebacker Shaun Phillips (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5623) in the waning seconds of the game. “We feel good about ourselves and we’re going to have fun out there. We aren’t going to be pushed around.”

Denver let that be known when nearly the entire team huddled near the Chargers during pregame warm-ups. A large scrum formed with some pushing and shoving. Officials had to break it up.

Think Miami-Florida State in the golden era of that rivalry.

After the game, the victorious Broncos, who pulled a similar stunt at Oakland in Week 3, were laughing about the dust-up. The Chargers were not.
“That was disrespectful,” said San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8427), who was pushing back players from both teams in the middle of the melee. “But we get to see them again. They didn’t have a cakewalk here … We’ll see them again.”
Merriman said the two Royal returns were devastating for San Diego.

“We can’t have that,” Merriman said. “You can’t have two returns for scores. It would have been a totally different game if that didn’t happen.”

After ALL of the smack that team has talked to us and the massive disrespect they have shown us you'd think Merriman would shut the **** up. Just goes to show you he is a angry washed up has been and the team as a whole still lacks class. I can't wait to beat them again in Denver.

Merriman was right: It would have been a different game. The Broncos still
would have gotten their points--because the dolts couldn't stop the Broncos
all game--and the dolts would have scored less because the Broncos would
have had the ball more.

It might have been closer to my predicted 31-17 . . . :coffee:

You know who DOESN'T get to talk about someone being disrespectful? Steroid cheaters who have their own stupid dances who also suck at staying healthy and who run their damn mouths constantly.

And you know what, the Broncos didn't have a cakewalk, but Dumervil and that other LB, I think it was D.J. (I always get him and Woodyard confused) sure as hell did.

Unfortunately it's quite possible Merriman becomes a Bengal next season. FML.

AJ Smith is a solid drafter, but thats all he has. A bunch of kids with no leaders.
And then theres the story of classy LT! Man, i just cant think of a more CLASSY kinda guy than LT!! Class act, that man! Is walking around with a big, mopey, cry-baby look on his face ALL GAME, CLASS!!?!?!?

Thank you.

I feel really bad for Zimmer. Ugh.

As far as Odom goes, his sack production slowed down a bit but he got a lot of doubles and still collapsed the pocket. That loss really hurts. Ugh.

Oh well, we have some guys like Fanene, Rucker and Johnson who can get after the QB in a decent rotation.

Officials have already had to separate the Broncos and Chargers and kickoff is still more than half an hour away.

It seems several Charger players got peeved that the Broncos met as a team on the San Diego side of the field, and San Diego linebacker Tim Dobbins and Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson were at the center of a heated exchange which included a little bit of pushing. San Diego’s Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips were also jawing loudly, as was Broncos NT Ronald Fields.

Officials pushed the teams apart, and the Broncos moved to the other side of the field for their stretching session.

For the record, I don’t think the Broncos were trying to start something. Before every game so far, the offense has been on the field early warming up. When the defense is ready to come on the field, the offense goes to greet them at the tunnel, they huddle up and then run down field together. The visiting team tunnel here is behind the end zone where San Diego warms up, which led to the problem.

I wouldn't be surprised if this episode of false bravado was staged. Maybe he thought by acting like he's protecting his house, that it would get his teammates juiced up. If all they have is the disrespect card to get you jacked-up for a game against a division rival you're in deep shit because that wont cut it. Dawkins said something very similar to this last week as they were preparing for this game.

I don't know where this info came from but I'm not so sure it's correct. I was at the game in the stands at the west end zone watching this whole thing happen. The Broncos were mostly on the north side of the field (my left) and the chargirls were on the south side. When a bunch of Broncos came out of the tunnel some chargirls stainding in the area started talking some smack. The Broncos responded and pretty soon the whole team was over there and the chargirls started over there too. The refs broke it up but it was a sight to see for sure.

The way I saw it I think the chargirls started it not the Broncos.

Here is the reason Merriman is talking about the disrespect. It's called the old 'bait and switch'. Here's an article posted prior to the game, and I'm sure it's the last thing that he wanted to talk about:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/10/17/merriman-promises-people-will-see-a-difference-monday/

Merriman promises "people will see a difference" Monday
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 17, 2009 5:07 PM ET
The injury report for Monday night's Broncos-Chargers was released Saturday, without any major surprises.

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter is listed as probable with an ankle injury, and will return to the lineup after missing last week's game. It's uncertain if he'll start.

The Chargers center Nick Hardwick and linebacker Antwan Applewhite are listed as out, while five players, including linebacker Shawne Merriman are listed as probable.

Merriman has been a league average linebacker at best thus far this season, with virtually no production and injury troubles.

He promises that "people will see a difference" in his play Monday night. He practiced twice this week, something he was unable to do before San Diego's bye.

"I feel good, ready to go," Merriman said. "More time to prepare, more time to rest up."

If San Diego loses Monday night, the Chargers will be three and a half games behind Denver in the AFC West.

And the truth shall set you free......

The Chargers talk more trash than any team in the NFL, complete lack of class, they deserve everything they get. It starts with their QB and is prevalent through out the team. I pray that we not only hand them another defeat this season but do so in embarrassing fashion.

He'd better stay away from women named "Tequila"! He keeps getting arrested, he's going to get a little red letter from the Commissioner telling him to sit down for a few games -- without pay.

You know after reading this the other day I just cannot keep my trap shut anymore. How many times have the Chargers come into our house and have disrespected us? How many times have they sat there and laughed in our face? How many times have they walked onto the field while on the sidelines and talk trash without a flag? How many times have they thrown a ball in a Broncos players face without getting a penalty? Etc etc etc etc......

Well if you ask me they got and will continue to get what they served for the past three to four years and I will sit back and enjoy every minute of it. You know I used to hate the Raiders the most....key word "USED"....it now falls on the Chargers who are a bunch of crying lil overpaid pompus bleeps!!!!!:salute:

I didn't get to see the 52-21 beat down they put on us last year but their were a lot of Charger fans yucking it up after the game with a picture of Felicia kicking back on Denver's bench. I don't know when that happened but it's just another proof of why Merriam should keep his crybaby tit mouth closed.

I like how Merriman has an opinion. Shut the hell up until you do something on the field Shawne. The media keeps talking to this second rate player because he was once a good player and he flaps his idiot gums all the time.

We should respond to beating them by 30 when they are in our house.

At least Phillip Rivers shut his pie-hole when we started kicking his ass in the second half.

And IF he wasn't tapping Tila he wouldn't be dealing with that annoying burning sensation in his crotch. Friggin' Merriman, still riding high on the reputation he built while all 'roided up. We may be seeing another Brian Bosworth in the making.

As far as disliking them more than the Raiders, I think I do too now. At this point the Raiders are like an old, broken down patient battling cancer, emphysema, Alzheimer's, and paralysis who fears his doctor is as likely to beat him as to help him. It will always feel good to beat the Faid, but more satisfying at this particular time to beat the Chargers. And this is coming from a guy who used to actually like the Chargers from the Fouts days.

I think every high school football coach in America should show before and after tapes of Merriman as an example of why not to do steroids. Has there ever been a more drastic dropoff in performance than his after getting caught juicing?

Going back to the incident to which Merriman alluded: Yes, it looked as if the
Broncos had invaded the Chargers' space a little bit. Maybe it did show a little
bit of disrespect.

I thought that was cool. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh256/AZDynamics/Smilies/throckon.gif

while the broncos invaded, raped and pillaged their HOME, the incident in question took place as our guys were coming out to take the field prior to the game..

so they did not have an option to not get involved..

hopefully Goodell will have something to say about this bush league act..

I know I already brought him up, but Bosworth is the one that comes to mind for me. Then he started having all kinds of joint problems, particularly in his shoulders. Is there a coincidence between his and Merriman's health issues or might they have a common root? Hmmm...

I couldn't tell which players were involved because they were all huddles together. The Broncos defense came out of the tunnel on the north side of the field (chargirls on the south side). The chargirls hadn't cam out yet but there were some of their defensive players there (in and near the end zone) and some on their sideline. When the Broncos players came out (they were running) it looked to me like a chargirl player said something to one of the Broncos because he slowed down. The rest of the players started bunching around and then the player from both sidelines started gathering around. Some pushing and shoving occured. I'm sure that lots of jawing was happening too. Any way the officials came over and broke it up at that point.

I'm sure it was the chargirls that started it though but can't be absolutely sure. It all happened about 20-30 minutes before the game when they had the uni's on but were still warming up. After all that the officials stood on the sidelines on the Broncos side to make sure nothing else started.

Ummmm that is a pic of Lyle Alzado in your avatar isn't it? Didn't he have major steroid issues?

I knew that he had, but went on a search and found this quote which is pretty damn sad:

“ I started taking anabolic steroids in 1969 and never stopped. It was addicting, mentally addicting. Now I'm sick, and I'm scared. Ninety percent of the athletes I know are on the stuff. We're not born to be 300 lbs or jump 30 ft. But all the time I was taking steroids, I knew they were making me play better. I became very violent on the field and off it. I did things only crazy people do. Once a guy sideswiped my car and I beat the hell out of him. Now look at me. My hair's gone, I wobble when I walk and have to hold on to someone for support, and I have trouble remembering things. My last wish? That no one else ever dies this way."[3] ” COURTESY OF WIKIPEDIA. 43 friggen years old. Sad. RIP Lyle!

In the end Merriman's comments are dumb. Look, it's football, the guys get paid to play a game. There better be some emotion on the field. This happens all the time, it's not a big deal. When Joey Porter was a Steeler he always got into it with a Bengal before the game.

They're rivals.

For him to suddenly forget that is sad. That guy runs his mouth nonstop. He's a cheater, an overrated player, he's soft and he's a liability to any franchise that he plays for.

Say what you want about Chad Johnson, but at least my loudmouth player produces, manages to stay out of the police blog, doesn't cheat and doesn't whine at the end of games.

Merriman is a disgrace to the NFL. Watching him fail will always bring a smile to my face.

I enjoy Ochocinco's trash talking. It usually all in good fun and he actually backs it up most of the time. I'd take Ocho on my team any day...Merriman not so much. Did you see Ochocinco pop right up after a vicious helmet to helmet hit by Ray Lewis and get in Ray's face? That's called backing it up. Getting your butt kicked and then whining to the media about being disrespected...not so much.

Oh the irony!!! Very observant Ma'am...I like to think of Lyle Alzado in two phases: Broncos and After Broncos. He was one of my favorites when I first started watching the Broncos in the 70's because he was our legitimate, 'don't mess with us or I will kill you' defensive player. Gradishar was smooth, Jackson was our emotional leader, but Alzado was our wrecking ball. Too bad he had that cockamamie idea about going back into the boxing ring and got himself traded to Cleveland then ended up in Oakland. Great start...bad ending.

Seeing cancer-stricken Lyle doing that commercial about the dangers and consequences of steroid use was heartbreaking. Alzado used human growth hormones harvested from cadavers from 1969 till he stopped playing professional football. His steroid use contributed to the brain tumor that eventually killed him.
