Broncos Team Report
Yahoo! Sports - Oct 15, 2:56 am EDT

At the NFL's fall meetings, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen expressed how impressed he is with coach Josh McDaniels and his team's 5-0 start this season.

"We took some early criticism hiring a young coach—he was 32 years old at the time—and were questioned about what he was going to be able to do," Bowlen told NFL.com. "He's been terrific. It's been extremely important as we got into the process of him being a head coach, that the way he's handled particular situations was well beyond his years. He's proven he is ready."

McDaniels has ridden his team pretty hard, from a grueling training camp to intense preparation for each of the team's five games. For the first time this season, McDaniels gave his team a full Monday off, after the win over New England. McDaniels had his team come to the facility after each of Denver's first four wins this season.

"As the year goes on you try to give them a little extra rest, and also give them a reward for playing a tough game, a physical game," McDaniels said. "And try to give them a little bit of a bone as we head into a long week—because we're going to have a long week."

The Broncos have been very good against the deep pass this season, but McDaniels knows San Diego's deep passing game will present Denver's secondary its toughest challenge to this point. McDaniels has a lot of respect for Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, who is among the league's best at throwing long.

"He's a great player, there's no denying that," McDaniels said. "We've played some good quarterbacks, and he's right up there with all of them. Great deep-ball thrower. Fabulous deep-ball thrower. Has great touch. And they have great deep-ball threats."

Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton was named AFC offensive player of the week for his performance against the Patriots. Orton was 34 of 48 for 330 yards and two touchdowns. He threw his first interception of the season, but that was on a first-half Hail Mary. It was picked off by Patriots receiver Randy Moss.

The award is the first player of the week honor for Orton in his career.

By The Numbers:

6—Coaches in the Super Bowl era to begin coaching career with a 5-0 record. Josh McDaniels can match Red Miller's team record 6-0 career start with a win Monday.

"It's a tough place to play. I've been there a number of times without much success. We're going to have our work cut out, obviously."
