Watching DMB's new DVD from Piedmont Park in Atlanta. You Might Die Trying is playing now.

Screw pop music and hip hop. This is about good music. Ben Harper just released a new album, and apparently DMB is in the studio getting some stuff done.

Let's devote this to actual musicians and not people with marginally good voices and no real talent...

My friend got me hooked on Coheed and Cambria. Excellent band. The lead singer singer Claudio Sanchez sounds an awful lot like Geddy Lee from Rush. Their songs are all derived from a story line from a comic book series called The Armory Wars. Give em a try.

I hope you don't think Soulja boy is real music. It's unbelievable how people like him get rich degrading women and saying YOU! for no apparent reason. He puts an ugly stain on rap, which I'm already not high on. Matisyahu is pretty cool in my book though.

Widespread's new album out Feb. 12

From Relix

Widespread Panic will release its next studio album, Free Somehow, online and in stores on February 12. As previously reported, the disc was recorded by Earth to America producer Terry Manning at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas and features eleven new songs, including “Boom Boom Boom,” “Walk On The Flood,” “Angels On High,” “Three Candles,” “Tickle The Truth,” “Free Somehow,” “Flicker,” “Dark Day Program,” “Her Dance Needs No Body,” “Already Fried” and “Up All Night.” Though Widespread Panic has played a few of these songs over the past year, most of the tracks have yet to hit the live stage. The group is also allowing fans to preview a handful of songs online now. Free Somehow will also receive a vinyl pressing on March 4. Widespread Panic will celebrate New Year's Eve in Atlanta from December 29-31.

Pretty much any decent heavy metal song shows it's classical roots. A lot of those heavy metal guitarists can PLAY. There's a lot of crap out there. But there is also a lot of really good metal too.

I'm sure the same is true of hip-hop and rap. I'm not really into it but Thnikka has pointed me to some pretty good stuff. To eliminate an entire genre just because you don't like it or understand it, isn't the point of this thread.

I just like to listen to good guitar music:

Ben Harper (excellent guitar player, but an incredible lap steel guitars, specifically Weissenborn guitars)

Michael Houser (Widespread Panic's guitarist who died - he was great at jangly southern-rock type riffs, and one-string solos, too)

Trey Anastasio (Phish - the dude is just friggin' amazing...his grooves are laced with Jazz and Arpegiated lines that are just amazing. Probably the best guitar player of this generation, and yet, hardly anyone knows who he is)

Tim Reynolds (Dave Matthews acoustic partner, the dude is amazing)

I could probably go on...Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey (moe), Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon)...those are the jam-band types I like.

the crap gets played on the radio because radio caters to the lowest common denominator-- and quite honestly, it's usually younger kids who don't know any better, and are easily taken in by "glamorous" BS-- no one over the age of twelve thinks brittney spears makes good music, but how many freakin' albums has she sold?

:frusty:

as for rock and guitar-driven music. . . i do like it, but i can't help feeling that it passed its' prime long ago, and has been mostly downhill since. . . there are only so many chords and scales out there, and most stuff i've heard over the past decade or so sounds pretty "been there, done that" to me. . . maybe i'm just getting old, but IMO it's pretty damn tough to compete with stuff like zeppelin, floyd and hendrix. . . i did like some of the punk/"alternative" (i actually really dislike that term) stuff that came out in the 80's-- loved the pixies, for example-- but i haven't heard anything since jane's addiction that i REALLY thought was particularly fresh or interesting. . . . those guys were all fantastic musicians, and their sound was fairly unique at the time. . . JMO, in any case-- everybody likes what they like. . . personally, i've never been able to get into the whole jam band thing, although some of my friends love it. . .

LOL - yep, thats one of the first signs of getting old! "Why, when I was young, we had REAL rock, not this phony baloney crap you kids listen to today". Thats when everyone rolls their eyes and tunes you out.

Actually the generation after mine had better music IMO. The Pixies were just phenomenal, Throwing Muses likewise - I saw them in a bar back in Rochester years ago, great stuff. Early Smashing Pumpkins (before Billy Corgan took homself seriously), My Bloody Valentine, Breeders, Lush, lots of other Alt bands from the late 80's and early 90's. Kind of a Golden Age as far as I'm concerned.

Lately I've been revisiting my Roxy Music collection - first 5 albums only. "Manifesto" is crap, and "Aavalon" too pop oriented and commercial for my liking. They were so far ahead of their time I'm still not sure anyone has caught up.

i used to listen to a ton of ambient. . . who do you like? of course i may not recognize the names, there's so much out there, and a ton of artists get little to no recognition as most of it isn't really radio-friendly music (translation - mostly pop garbage since the 70's). . . also, i really haven't followed the ambient scene much at all over the past decade or so. . .

Kind of the definition of Jazz on Acid

listening to the daedelus now. . .

are any of you guys familiar with material? it's one of bill laswell's dozens of projects. . . they've done quite a bit of stuff, and i've only heard a few of their recordings, but hallucination engine is freaking fantastic! couldn't find any clips of it online, unfortunately. . . material was more funk oriented prior to that album, but for that one he wanted to do an ambient/downtempo type of album with predominantly live instrumentation (see, even MB can like it!), and he put together an amazing group of musicians including shankar, bootsie collins, bernie worell, sly and robbie, herbie hancock, wayne shorter and more. . . the album is brilliant. . .

That is like saying:

"If you like rock music, you should head down to the supermarket and listen to the instrumental versions"

New single by Coheed and Cambria. This song is pretty sweet. I've been jamming out to it for the last couple of months and I still love it.

Just saw this reply, and I had to mention how In the Aeroplane Over the Sea probably has some of the best lyrics I have heard. If the previews you were listening to were of that album, you are going to have to either a) Buy the album on ebay and listen to it more than once, or b) Go to youtube and type in Neutral Milk Hotel.

You may not be into the low fi indie stuff, but if you are saying you wouldn't buy it because of the instruments alone you'll have to listen to a whole song a few times. I've read reviews of it from people who bought it and didn't like it at all the first time, but listened to it more and more and began to love it. I guess it's an album that grows on you. It's an album more about the emotion Jeff Mangum (singer, guitar) puts into the song, seeing as it's an album written by him after reading a book about Anne Frank and having nightmares about the halocaust and stuff so anytime he sings 'she' or 'her' he is more than likely talking about Anne Frank.

My point is it's one of the most emotional albums i've ever heard and if you don't like it, that's alright.

I just had to tell someone about it, heh.

Hmm, the first post by a member. Looks like spam.

I think the tip off is posting about euro club hits in the good music thread.

He made another post this morning in the American Idol thread about "euro club hits." What nailed it on the head for me was that he said if you like Daughtry, you'd like this dance music...huh .

I found my dad's old Rush 2112 CD. This calls for celebration from a dancing pink elephant. :elefant:
