Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton will be named AFC Offensive Player of
the Week for games played during the fifth week (Oct. 11-12) of the 2009
season, the National Football League informed the Broncos on Tuesday.

Orton's selection as his conference's Player of the Week is the first such
award of his five-year NFL career.

The quarterback was recognized by the NFL after completing 35-of-48
(72.9%) passes for 330 yards with two touchdowns and one interception (Hail
Mary pass attempt) for a 96.7 rating in Denver's 20-17 overtime win against
New England on Sunday. He led two touchdown drives of at least 10 plays
and 90 yards against the Patriots, including a 12-play, 98-yard drive late in
the fourth quarter that tied the game and eventually forced overtime.

Orton's 35 completions were a career high and tied for the third-highest
single-game total in the NFL this year. His 72.9 completion percentage also
was a personal best and marked the second-highest game total in Broncos
history among players with at least 45 pass attempts.

A former standout at Purdue University, Orton is the Broncos' 44th AFC
Offensive Player of the Week winner since the award was initiated by the NFL
in 1984.

P.S. As Guru noted in the comments there, this is the real deal, not the Pepsi fan award . . .

I thought Orton would be a good QB in McD's system but I didn't think he would win this kind of award this year. He has proven to be a dedicated professional that works hard to improve his craft. Hope he continues the upward trend. Though I don't look for him to post those kind of numbers every game going forward. Just play mistake free football and move the chains.

He also moved into 4th on Peter Kings MVP ranking. Not a big deal, but cool still.

the kid was thrust into a really bad situation coming into DEN when Jay left .. absolutely no one wanted him here but Josh..

he has worked his ass off to learn the scheme and now is putting in hours after practice to get the timing down with his receivers..

I'm not sure how much better he can get but 14 more performances like this week will be alright with me..:salute:

now I know that is not going to happen but keep the chains moving and do not turn the ball over and we will be in the hunt for playoff WINS, something we have not done in a long while..

I'll admit it, I never thought Orton would be doing this well for us. But guess what, Im freaking glad I thought wrong. I can brag about our QB and his name is KYLE ORTON. Who would have guessed?? I hope he continues to play well and mistake free!
