Both the Broncos and the New England Patriots are expected to be without their starting running backs when they play Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High.
New England's Fred Taylor is set to have surgery to repair the ankle injury he suffered last week, according to a report from ESPNBost.com.
Denver's Correll Buckhalter has not practiced this week because of a high ankle sprain and might not be back until after the Broncos' bye week, which is after next week's game at San Diego.
Rookie Knowshon Moreno, who leads the team in carries but is second to Buckhalter in yards, is likely to start for the Broncos, with LaMont Jordan and Peyton Hillis as the new No. 2 and No. 3 options.
For the Patriots, the other options at running back are Laurence Maroney; Sammy Morris, who rushed for 138 yards against Denver last season; and BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
