SERIES HISTORY

Going into last season the Chargers hadn't beaten the Broncos twice in the same season since 1982. Now they're threatening to do it two years in a row, something that last happened almost 40 years ago (1967-68). San Diego has won the past two meetings by a combined score of 89-23 (48-20 and 41-3).

Chargers' next opponent: Denver Broncos (6-8)
5:10 p.m. Monday at Qualcomm Stadium

Hard to believe, but just two seasons ago the Broncos won the AFC West and hosted the AFC Championship Game. Now they're fighting just to avoid their first losing season since 1999. Beginning with a loss to Pittsburgh in that '05 title game, the Broncos are a very mediocre 15-16, including 8-11 since Jay Cutler replaced Jake Plummer at quarterback in December 2006.

Denver's offense hasn't been all bad, although the Broncos should have more points (17th in the league) considering how many yards they've gained (sixth). They won't have a 1,000-yard rusher for the first time since 2001, but they rank eighth in the league in yards rushing per game and third in yards per carry.

The defense has been the biggest problem. Only the Raiders have allowed more yards per carry than Denver (4.5), and only the Dolphins and Lions have allowed more points than the Broncos (367). Still, cornerback Champ Bailey was the only Broncos player picked for the Pro Bowl.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH
Jay Cutler – The stats are pretty good for Denver's second-year quarterback – 64.6 percent completions, 18 TDs, 90.8 rating – but the Broncos rank in the middle of the league in points scored. They've had five games of 27 or more points, but six games of 15 or fewer. Still, Cutler's powerful arm always makes him dangerous.

Brandon Marshall – A case can be made that this 6-4, 222-pounder should have been selected to the Pro Bowl with 86 catches and more than 1,100 yards, although it hurts that he has just six TDs. In his past two games, Marshall has 21 receptions for 222 yards.

John Lynch – Now 36, the former Torrey Pines High standout hasn't committed to a 16th NFL season next year. That means it's possible this could be his final game at Qualcomm Stadium, where he celebrated a Super Bowl title with Tampa Bay nearly five years ago. He has played five NFL games at the Q, with his team winning three.

FAMILIAR FACES
Pro personnel assistant Jimmy Spencer played for the Chargers in 1998-99. Tight end Stephen Alexander, who also played for the Chargers (2002-03), is on injured reserve. Safety Marviel Underwood, who played at San Diego State from 2001-04, joined the Broncos two weeks ago but was waived yesterday without being activated.

INJURY REPORT
Denver does not expect to have LB Ian Gold (knee) or TE Daniel Graham (ankle). WR Brandon Stokley (knee) and S Nick Ferguson (knee) each missed the Houston game but hope to return Monday. Their status will be updated throughout the week.

LAST MEETING
The Chargers handed Denver its worst home loss since 1966 with a 41-3 blowout Oct. 7. Philip Rivers had a career-high 151.4 passer rating, Michael Turner rushed for 147 yards, LaDainian Tomlinson had 140 total yards and Antonio Gates (113) and Vincent Jackson (84) combined for nearly 200 receiving yards. The Chargers finished with 484 total yards.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to the Rocky Mountain News, Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall was fined $7,500 by the NFL for throwing snow in the air to celebrate a touchdown catch during a game Dec. 9. By comparison, Broncos safety Nick Ferguson was fined $5,000 for a low hit on a special teams play earlier this season that the league judged to be “unnecessary roughness

And Terrell Owens of Dallas wasn't fined at all for dumping popcorn on himself while celebrating a TD.

DID YOU HEAR?
“I think you always want to end the season on a positive note. We'd like to play our best football on Monday night. Obviously, the playoffs are out of the picture, but I'd still like to do the little things the right way and work to the offseason, and, hopefully, we finish strong. I'll be surprised if we don't have anybody that doesn't play hard.”

– Denver coach Mike Shanahan

KEY STAT
Having allowed 367 points this season, the Broncos are within a field goal of setting a record for the most points allowed under Mike Shanahan, who took over the team in 1995. The current high of 369 was set in 2000. Denver has allowed 28 or more points seven times this season, equaling its total for the past three seasons combined.

Hard to beleive S.D. has'nt won a playoff game since 1995 ... dayuuuuuuuuuum! :D

The Defense has sunk us many seasons before this one. It's bad this year but dang ... you'd think we had the 2000 Ravens Defense at one time the way some people make it out to be. The Defense has not been able to step up, come through, and force a stop when we absolutely had to for some time.

Hey, if K.C. can go into S.D. and win by 14 ... why not us.

Not only that but we made RIvers look like an all pro 10 year vet.

Anyone know if Merriman is playing?

What do you think the odds are of stopping him twice.. to only 67 yards..

BTW their back up got 147

Phiillps 13-18 for 270 and 2 tds

LT got 73 recieving yards on 3 catches..

And that was all at our HOUSE.. 484 net yards for them almost twice what we had.. THIS TIME WE PLAY IN SAN

Our Dline could not stop Dayne how is it gonna stop LT?While i'm not going to put any money on Denver on the fact that we're so inconsistant and 2-5 on the road ... it's certainly not out of the relm of possibility.

Am i depending on our Defense to win us this game?? No. I think we've moved on beyond the point of this Defense trying to stop anybody. I do think they have been playing better as of late though. Unfortunately the Offense has'nt been able to put up any points beyond F.G.s. That's not alot of support ...

In order for us to have any chance of winning this game, we're probaly going to have to do just what K.C. did .... put up 30 points.

As potent as SAN is 42 might be more like it and get a couple of turnovers..

I will be at the game hoping for this to happen. I remember when the Chargers were 6 or 7 and 0 and we were around 2 and 5. Went in there after they beat us opening day (comeback) to keep the non sweep alive until last year. I will be there again supporting my Broncos. BTW and OT: Why isnt there a forum here for tailgate and meet ups for games? If anyone needs tickets and tailgate, PM me for details. $115 for everything in plaza 54. Crap load of Broncos fans gathering. Hope to meet more fans.

This is the one thing that shocked me when I read the paper. Throwing snow is worse than a low hit.? The NFL really does stand for the No Fun League.

I can understand low hits, late hits, and so forth, yet let these guys have some fun for crying out loud. I mean if he threw the snow in the air once would there have been no fine or was three going overboard. Seriously, the NFL must have better things to do........I would hope.

Right now I think he is questionable.
