Amid cold temperatures and rain-mixed-with-snow conditions at Broncos headquarters today, coach Josh McDaniels led his team to the outdoor practice field. McDaniels doesn't generally believe in practicing in bubbles.

"If we play in it, I hope we practice in it, and that's going to be our philosophy," he said. "If it's wet, damp, raining, snowing, whatever, we're going to be outside."

Sunday's forecast for the Broncos' game against the visiting New England Patriots calls for more cold weather and possibly snow. Knowing that, McDaniels said there is no possibility that his team would practice indoors.

"You can't just tell the guys, 'Hey, we're going to practice inside in a bubble all week long and when we go out there and play in the snow on Sunday, just make sure you do all the things you're supposed to do,' " McDaniels said.

"You have to be ready to handle it. You have to understand what you can and can't do when the weather's poor. You can't cut the same way, you may not be able to throw the same way. And it definitely affects the kicking game first."

Now, if the Broncos were playing at Tampa Bay or San Diego on Sunday, McDaniels said he might move practice indoors — but only if there were blizzard-like conditions during practice.

"If there was some clear-cut (forecast) where we knew the weather was going to be beautiful on Sunday and we're out there trying to practice in two feet of snow, I don't think that would be smart," he said. "But if the weather has a chance to be poor on the weekend, we have to prepare for it."

Josh leaves nothing to chance.

This team will be smart, physical, and tough like he's been saying since he's arrived in Denver.

They will also be prepared!!!

This is a recipie for winning.

Definitely makes sense to me to practice in the conditions that is reported will be the game day conditions. In previous years, when the weather was bad, the Broncos practiced in the bubble. That is why Mike wanted it built.

I still love Shanny, but I swear. If the weather wasn't darkening his tan he just plain didn't want to be outside.

I still love Shanny also, but what Coach McD is doing makes sense. The only reason the bubble should be used is if we are going to play next against a team on the road who plays in a dome - then you practice in the bubble, and pipe in the noise.

LMAO. He did have a great tan though.

...who cares if he'll look like a prune in a couple of years.

 .. I like how he just keeps practicing for game situations. Just like week 1 when we practiced earlier and earlier every day so we would be prepared for the opener at 11. We may not be the best team or have the most talent. But we will always be prepared to win and I don't see us ever getting blown out this year. Unlike years past.
No more 41-3 games or 44-6 or anything like that. :salute:

No indoor practice for McDaniels, Broncos

By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Sports Writer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP)—The Denver Broncos didn’t go indoors when the weather turned bad.

Instead of practicing inside “the bubble,” coach Josh McDaniels had his team work out in the rain, sleet and snow that pelted Dove Valley on Thursday.

The forecast for Sunday when the New England Patriots (3-1) visit the Broncos (4-0) calls for a chance of slushy snow, so McDaniels figured it would be silly not to practice in it.

And the players had better get used to it, too.

McDaniels said his philosophy is that bad weather during the week is a gift.

“If it is wet, damp, raining, snowing or whatever, we are going to be outside,” he said.

What if somebody gets hurt?

“I don’t really weigh it,” McDaniels said. “If we play in it (in a game), to me, we have got to get ready to play in it. You can’t just tell the guys, ‘Hey, we are going to practice inside in a bubble all week long. Then, when we go out there and play in the snow on Sunday, just make sure that you do all of the things you are supposed to do when the weather is bad. Stay on your feet. Field the ball. Throw it in the wet and all that stuff.”’

More than half of Denver’s roster is new, so McDaniels wanted to use the bad weather as a teaching moment.

“You have to understand what you can and can’t do when the weather is poor,” he said. “You can’t cut the same way. You may not be able to throw the same way. It definitely affects the kicking game first. Ball handling, our kickers, our specialists, all of those things, doing those types of actions in poor weather, that is not something you (can ignore) and then go out and perform well.

“For all the people that touch the ball, footing is an issue. Passing, catching, kicking, fielding, all of those things are definitely an issue when the weather gets bad. The only way you get good at doing it in the bad weather is practicing it.”

And what if Sunday comes and the forecasters were wrong?

“I don’t think practicing outside is going to hurt anybody anyway,” McDaniels said.

“If there was some clear-cut thing where we knew the weather was going to be beautiful on Sunday and we are out there trying to practice in two feet of snow, I don’t think that would be smart. If the weather has got a chance to be poor on the weekend, I think you have got to get ready for it.”
