PERSONNEL ANALYSIS

The Broncos are in the rare position of being out of the playoff race with a month left in the regular season. Denver won't begin working in younger players -- injuries and necessity already have taken care of that. But Denver's coaches will be studying film to make sure players aren't quitting before they make personnel decisions for next season.

One of the most significant signs of quarterback Jay Cutler's development is his improved feel in the pocket. There were concerns last season about Cutler's internal clock -- as a rookie, he stood in the pocket too long and endured several hard hits. But with increased knowledge of the offense, improved footwork and -- probably most importantly -- a better feel for the speed of the game, Cutler has made strides. That, combined with more experience with his receivers, has allowed Cutler to make more plays.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Broncos finally are seeing the Tony Scheffler they expected before the tight end broke his left foot in a mini-camp last May. It took Scheffler time not only to recover from his injury, but also to become properly conditioned. A season-ending injury to Nate Jackson coincided with Scheffler's full recovery, and the latter has emerged as a downfield threat over the last couple of months. Scheffler has a strong bond with Cutler and works the seams particularly well. Denver has been getting him in space by splitting him out in three-wide packages. That takes Scheffler off the line of scrimmage, where he relies on positioning and angles to block rather than mauling. Scheffler is a strong route runner, but his best traits are his body control while adjusting to errant passes and his soft hands.

THIRD QUARTER GRADES

Offense: B-. The red-zone touchdowns need to come more frequently, but the group is beginning to find its groove.

Defense: D+. Putting eight men in the box helped against the run for a while, but the unit still misses too many tackles and surrenders too many big plays and points.

Special teams: D+. The group had been improving for several weeks until the Devin Hester debacle in Chicago, and it also had problems in Oakland.

Coaching: C-. There has been too much inconsistency and too many ill-timed penalties. Discipline starts at the top.

I guess you would have to ask Rasizer.
