Doctors saw promising signs of progress overnight from Damar Hamlin, who remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Wednesday morning, according to a friend and business partner of the Buffalo Bills safety.
Jordon Rooney told ESPN's Coley Harvey that Hamlin is still in the intensive care unit at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, less than two days after he went into cardiac arrest on the field during the Bills' game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Rooney told ESPN that Hamlin is still sedated, but doctors saw promising readings overnight from him that they had hoped to see by Wednesday morning. Hamlin's agent, Ron Butler, told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday night that Hamlin's oxygen levels had improved.

Someone was telling me that this type of thing happened to a HS Lacrosse player, the ball hit him in the chest, stopped his heart and luckily med staff was on it and saved the kid. Supposedly he was out for a few weeks but was able to finish his Lacrosse season.
Hopefully this ends similarly.

That's a great sign that they're making a statement that he's "neurologically intact". That's been my biggest worry these past couple of days.

Yep. Doesn't take long for brain damage to set in.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has shown "remarkable improvement" over the past 24 hours, the team said, as he continues his recovery after going into cardiac arrest and collapsing on the field during Monday's game.
Hamlin's agent, Ronald Butler, told The Associated Press that Hamlin was awake and has been able to grip the hands of family members at his hospital bedside.
The Bills released an update on Hamlin's status from his doctors Thursday morning, noting that he remains critically ill but appears to be neurologically intact.
"Per the physicians caring for Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours," the team said. "While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress. We are grateful for the love and support we have received."

Some more information in this article
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is beginning to awaken as he shows "substantial improvement" in his recovery from going into cardiac arrest and collapsing on the field during Monday's game, doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Thursday.
One of the doctors, Timothy Pritts, said Hamlin is still considered critically ill and that significant progress is needed for the 24-year-old. Hamlin's neurological condition appears to be intact, Pritts said.
Hamlin is able to move his hands and feet, doctors said. He is unable to speak but was able to communicate in writing, Pritts said, including asking whether the Bills won Monday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals -- a contest that was postponed following his collapse.

I wish the writer was more clear--is he still intubated?

Great to read, thank you for sharing Carol.
I'll never forget when my wife was waking up from her coma on the ventilator trying to let her know where she was, what was going on, etc. and gauging her questions and level of understanding by nothing more than the look in her eyes and facial expressions. She wasn't able to write anything due to the paralytics and the fact she'd been under for 10 days at that point, just thinking how great it is that he can write his questions out rather than the family just guessing.
Rough thing to go through for everyone involved.

From what I’ve heard, if this really was commotio cordis like they suspect, his heart would most likely be completely healthy and he would eventually make a full recovery. I’m no doctor, but I haven’t read anything that says his career is definitely over unless he wants it to be. Personally I couldn’t imagine going back out there, but these NFL players are cut from a different cloth. Obviously, playing again is very low on the priority list, but he shouldn’t have any long term effects.

CINCINNATI -- The prayers between Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins and Damar Hamlin's family are going both ways.
In his first comments since Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and collapsed, Higgins said Thursday that Hamlin's mother, Nina, has been in touch and offered prayers in support in the aftermath of his collision with Hamlin during Cincinnati's game against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.
"It was just telling me she's thinking of me, praying for me and things like that, telling me he's OK, all the good, positive stuff," said Higgins, who added that knowing Hamlin is improving is making him feel good inside.
Higgins, who went to Clemson, played against the Bills safety in college while Hamlin attended Pitt. The two also spent time together at Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd's annual football camp in the Pittsburgh area, where Boyd and Hamlin are from.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin had his breathing tube removed and has begun talking with his care team, family and his teammates.
Hamlin's breathing tube was removed overnight, per the physicians at University of Cincinnati Medical Center in a statement via the Bills, and he continues to "progress remarkably in his recovery." His neurological function remains intact, per the physicians, and he has been able to talk.
Hamlin is talking to loved ones and has also FaceTimed with his teammates, telling the players and coaches, "Love you, boys," during Friday's team meeting.
On Thursday, doctors shared with reporters that removing the breathing tube would be an important step forward for Hamlin, who they hope can return home with his family as soon as possible.

Damar Hamlin had every football program in the country recruiting him during his senior year at Pittsburgh's Central Catholic, his talent and upside enough to make him an undisputed four-star prospect and ESPN's No. 2 defensive player in Pennsylvania.
Late in that 2015 season, Hamlin took a hit to the side of his knee against Penn-Trafford in the WPIAL Class 4A district championship, and coaches decided to hold him out the following week in a state quarterfinal against State College as a precaution. But that was not going to keep him off the field.
Hamlin begged his coaches to let him do something to help. His defensive coordinator at the time, Dave Fleming, put it more bluntly.
"After being a pain in the butt about it, we let him carry the water bottles," Fleming recalled in a phone interview.
So there Hamlin stood, captain of the football team, elite prospect with offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh and many others, literally carrying water for his teammates. Because he had to be there for them. Because there was no other way.
