Never been a big fan of Jameis Winston, but his elbow/knees anatomy lesson presser was, dare I say, endearing? I like him more as a human being after that. Still glad he ain't a Bronco though.

It was initially reported by Rap Sheet as a benching - but I guess Ryan has a shoulder injury which is maybe why he deleted the tweet I posted.

In any case, yeah, it's like every notable 30+ year old QB fell off a cliff this year. Brady, Rodgers, Russ, and Ryan have all been crap this year. Not really sure what's going on. There's been like 5 good QBs this year and the rest have been pretty awful.
I assume he means the fantasy implications are big...

Colts to bench Matt Ryan for the rest of the season (separated shoulder) and will start Sam Ehlinger "for the rest of the season." If the name is familiar, Ehlinger was the University of Texas quarterback that was the apple of every sportscaster's eye when he was in Austin. He also had this amazing knack of blowing games late, either with fumbles, interceptions or miscues. He did beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl one year so we'll see if he's learned anything under Frank Lloyd Reich this summer.

Question I heard on a podcast today that feels impossible to answer right now:
Who is the best QB from last year's first round class? Lawrence, Lance, Wilson, Fields, or Jones? It's still early obviously, but this is feeling like a big time flop of a QB class.
I feel like the answer right now is Fields? And he's a terrible passer, but he can at least make things happen on the ground. Lawrence probably still has the highest ceiling, but he hasn't really shown it yet. Even though Russ hasn't quite been what we'd hoped for yet, I'm still not sad we punted on QB in that draft and instead got a Hall of Fame talent in PS2.

It's insane how bad that class is looking. You expect at least half to bust usually but all 5 of those might.

Now compare his line, his weapons, his coaches, etc.
In year two, halfway through the season, the team is FINALLY scheming to the same strengths we've seen pay off in Hurts, Jackson, etc. Tebow had DT and Decker. Field's most talented weapon was Allen Robinson and Claypool. Claypool is a nice talent but literally just got to the team. They've been asking Fields to carry a burden (all those factors) that Rodgers and Brady have struggled to carry this year.

Hurts was not a good passer in year two. Hurts also had a talented WR and one of the best lines in year two. If you watch Fields play, it's pretty clear he could have had hit the 61% 16 TDs and 9 INTs. Fields' bad coaching, lack of real NFL weapons, and historically bad line are facts that haven't changed. You're a man of nuance, you can at least acknowledge them and be less Jaded.

How does one of the most consistent QB's in the game make that line suck? It just seems like you're grading both the players and the outcomes on talent. It's not how it works. Regardless, we'll never agree on this. Ever. And that's actually kind of cool because at the end of the day nothing matters, there is no God, and all there is is dust in the wind...until both the dust and the wind are gone as well.

I have never heard a reasonable argument as to how anyone as productive as he is, with radically different contexts of the team he originally had in WAS to the team he latter had in WAS, and the fluctuations of players in MIN, could be bad. You're not saying he's overrated. You're not saying he's above average and just that. You're saying he's flat out bad at football. That's the problem; there's nothing to really support....wait...hold on...oh shit...the wind is gone....nothing matters

Well, if he's a mobile QB that relies on his physical attributes and then doesn't use them, can't diagnose a defense, makes bad throws, holds onto the ball too long, and does a bunch of other bad shit that Russ has done all season long that'd be a start.
Russ won his SB as a game manager and you yourself said that he's playing his way into maybe not being a HoFer. Hadn't even thought about that until you posted it.

Dude is not a bad QB. Not gonna singlehandedly get you to the playoffs, but he can be a solid QB when he's not being McDaniels'd.
He's basically the same dude as Kurt Cousins. Sort of borderline top ten-ish level QB. As you said, he won't carry a roster on his back to the playoffs, and even with a good team around him will likely lose to a team with a better QB at some point in the playoffs. He'll need everything to bounce just exactly right to ever compete for a championship, but he can win a lot of games in the right situation-- like Kurt is doing right now. IF Carr does get outright released, he'd be a fool not to make a bee-line for New York. He's never been coached by anybody half as smart as Daboll-- would be interesting to see what Brian could do with a guy like Carr, after the production he's gotten out of super scrub Daniel Jones.
Also, please God let McDaniels draft the Raiders next QB!

Also according to Raiders fans McDaniels is asking Carr to do a lot of things that he is not good at, and not letting him to the things he is good at that got them to the playoffs last season. Another example of how important it is to scheme according to the strength of your players. Almost every QB needs good coaching to be good, they all can't be Pey Pey.

I highly doubt that Stidham is much different than Carr in that respect. Carr is a middle tier QB who is up and down with his consistency and that is probably why he is being benched. He's a severe choke artist going back before McDaniels even got there. It cracks me up when fans try to spin shit to make bad QB's look like they are better than they are. This isnt an endorsement for McDaniels but lets not pretend Carr was some top tier QB going into this year. Fans have massively overrated Carr for many years now but he is actually the Raiders version of Kyle Orton.

Bruh, you're telling me Stidham - literally a nobody - and Carr - a QB who has won games and been successful and gone to the playoffs - are on the same level?
Like, I'm not saying Carr is a top QB by any means. He's very much average. But many teams would kill to have a mid-tier QB like him.

It’s time. One could argue it’s past time. Nearing the end of his ninth season with the Raiders, Derek Carr has been benched in favor of backup Jarrett Stidham for the final two games of the season.
Head coach Josh McDaniels made the announcement Wednesday in the week following Derek Carr’s latest poor performance in what would be the Raiders fifth blown lead and second half collapse of the season. In addition, Carr and the Raiders have decided it best that he stay away for the final two weeks (https://twitter.com/VicTafur/status/1608255532707770368) so as not to be a distraction.
We came into this season saying Derek Carr has no excuses. And that’s still where we are. He has an All Pro wide receiver, a Pro Bowl slot receiver, a Pro Bowl tight end, the league’s leading rusher, and an offensive line that has played above expectations. The defense hasn’t been great, but you can’t blame them for these collapses when it’s the offense that is getting shut out in the second half.

They got those 30 points off 5 turnovers. Lot of short fields. Two of their TD drives were 18 and 16 yards. Not to say the offense was totally the reason they lost, but let's not act like the defense isn't the main reason they built that lead.

My buddy is currently having a Twitter fight with some dude that wrote an article “Kirk Cousins is a better QB than John Elway”.
The human species is ******.
Thats ok, some dude posted a bunch of stats with Mahomes vs Elway claiming Mahomes was better because "stats". Thought you would be proud of my pushback on that.

Comparing stats across eras like that is stupid, but it's not that absurd to argue Mahomes vs Elway as players. Dude is 27 and might already be a week away from matching Elway in rings. Assuming he stays healthy and plays another decade or so, I don't think anything about their resumes will even be close. I know Broncos fans don't want to hear this, but I don't think many people if anyone are going to put Elway's career ahead of Mahomes when both are done playing, and I'm not sure they'll be wrong.

Well which is though? You kind of contradicted yourself there. Either the eras are different or they are not. I would argue Mahomes has had it easier than John even early in his career. Not taking anything away from Patrick as he will most certainly be a HOF'r but i doubt that Patrick would have had the same success as John had the roles been reversed. IMO

I didn't contradict myself. I just said that despite the fact that it's dumb to compare stats across eras, Mahomes is still probably already on Elway's level if not passed him. I don't agree at all that Mahomes wouldn't have still been dominant in the 80s and 90s. His talent would work in any era. It's not like he's just a product of a modern offensive system. He has elite talent and athleticism.
Not gonna lie, you're just being a really biased broncos fan to act like it's absurd to possibly put Mahomes ahead of Elway. And I say this as someone whose childhood hero was Elway and he was my favorite athlete of all time. But you just can't deny what Mahomes has done.

The best things Mahomes does are when plays break down and he's scrambling around and he throws an off balance, sidearm pass on a rope 30 yards downfield right on target. Shit like that ain't got nothing to do with the play Reid called.
Not saying being in that system doesn't help, but I don't see how any rational fan could watch Mahomes and act like his success is just because of the system he's in.

You would need a comparative model to do a stat comp, or some overarching measurement like WAR/winshare, etc.
If you want to do talent comps, that's a little easier/more observable. Both have great arms; John edges it, but the difference is probably superfluous. Elway was probably a step faster, but Mahomes feels like the shiftier guy. John feels a little more durable. Mahomes feels like his arm angle playmaking/throwing on a platform/off a platform, etc. is an edge.
John played in an era where the rules highly favored defense. I would personally argue that the rules today favoring offense aren't as extreme as the ones back then favoring defense. That goes to Elway . Mahomes, however, is pretty much the guy killing everyone else in stats by a mile; in his offensive era no one is quite on his level on any given year, and the accumulation of that is pretty damning. I don't know who you give that edge to.
John didn't have a great coach for a long time. Andy Reid is one of the best offensive minds ever. Mahomes had a lot of weapons, but now he's dominating the league with just one legitimate guy, so you can't knock him for that jsut because he had better weapons than Elway. I've been told the three amigos and were good but not great. And so on and so forth.
My gut feeling is John would dominate the league on the teams Mahomes had. I also think Mahomes would dominate the AFC with the teams that Elway had. WHo knows? Maybe the dipshit head coach would have been able to trade Mahomes like he tried with John?
Just some thoughts.
Mahomes is much more handsome though.

Sure, but that's not the argument. You said someone of his build wouldn't have made it in the 80s. Then I proved his build is bigger than those guys. Then you said he's made of glass. And I gave data showing he almost never misses games. Now you're mentioning QBs being coddled. That's true, but these guys still get hit, and hit alot. Especially someone like Mahomes who moves around and runs and extends plays. He gets hit a lot. Your hero Brady did nothing but sit in the pocket and get protected by refs if that's the route you want to go. Mahomes plays a way more physical style of football and takes way more hits than Brady, and is still just as good.

This might be the dumbest thing you've ever posted. Just because the rules protect QBs now doesn't mean the hit that hurt his ankle wasn't a hard hit. I’m fairly certain you have inaccurate info on JFE, he weighed as much as 250lb at one point in his career. He got carried away with working out with his OL and later dropped the weight.
I doubt he ever played under 230 beyond a few seasons at the beginning of his career.

https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/what-is-john-elway-weight
I'm guessing that these (there's a one pound difference on the last one) were when he was drafted then? In regards to him hitting 250, sometimes you gotta get swoll! If he was around 230 then Mahomes is still in the same ballpark.
Regarding the (this wasn't your point, Jaded, I'm just talking now big homie) toughness thing...Mahomes is a beast. That SB he was still playing off a concussion and a busted ankle. He was magical against the Jags and the Bengals on one leg. He's not made of glass; he's pretty ******* tough. And if the better athletes of today aren't shelfing him, I'm not sure the 80's guys would, either.
To me, they're pretty much the same guy. There's minor differences in height and weight, but the stye is the same. I think I posted this stuff in this thread a few days/weeks ago, and whatnot. Mahomes would dominate Elway's era. Elway would dominate Mahomes' era. They are at a talent level where nothing short of a car crash or a Paxton Lynch mentality would change things.
Dogfish made a point about playcalling: that shit hurt Elway badly. It would hurt Mahomes badly. But each guy can hit all the throws that the other can. You'd just probably have the same thing: a god QB with a turd HC that just wants to run the ball for the sake of running the ball. The QB would overcome the HC.
