Not sure any one single person in history did more to advance the popularity of the sport of football than John Madden.

Hall of Fame coach and broadcasting icon John Madden died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, the NFL announced. He was 85

"On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

"Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today."

“The only yardstick for success our society has is being a champion. No one remembers anything else.”

And he was a champion…. RIP, you are football immortality

Oh no! That's terrible news. Madden's voice is forever seared into my mind, Boom!

Not just a hell of a coach, broadcaster, and football mind but by all accounts just an all-around wonderful man and human being. I know his family will certainly miss him, as will generations of football fans.

Rest in peace Mr. Madden, I'm sure you'll be watching every Sunday.

About 3 weeks ago a friend of mine and I were looking up at some Frank Caliendo’s imitation of John Madden. Great stuff!

This one hurts big time. Three generations saw him dominate in three entirely different facets of the game.

His crazy ass coaching made me fall in love with the team. His BOOM! and telestrating made me become obsessed with the game. I was a heavy gamer from 1982 to about 2006 and since then, Madden is the only game I play.

When they announced his documentary, some including myself wondered if this was a living tribute to someone who had very little time left. Damn.

R.I.P coach.

When I was watching the documentary, I actually had to look it up to see if he was still alive

John Madden was a tremendous ambassador for the game of football and the NFL. There's no way to parse out how much of my own fandom follows from his legacy, but it's a significant portion.

The early John Madden NFL games had me spending hours upon hours of play. John Madden '93 is the first I owned I believe for my Sega Genesis.

Madden always was a positive factor in any game broadcast that he was involved in. His enthusiasm was as contagious as the Omicron variant.

By all accounts, he was a good man. Approachable, kind, warm-hearted. The world has lost a hero.

Every year, every birthday (November) since I had a Playstation 1 up to high school graduation, I got the new Madden game. Spent so many dumb hours with all of those games!

RIP to a legend.

You know I hate the raiders for a long time. However, I have a great respect for John Madden. Unfortunately, John Madden's unexpected death shakes up NFL world. It hurts NFL and us.

Did you know that Madden didn’t believe in airplanes and he never fly in his lifetime because of claustrophobia? One of interesting facts about him. Madden rode his bus to travel to all NFL games and throughout most of his broadcasting career. A Greyhound bus was converted into the "Madden Cruiser" in 1987.
I met him and I got his autograph. We had a short chat and he knew some American Sign Language. He was an amazing guy.

We truly lost a legend. Thank you, John Madden. Rest In Paradise, Madden

Yeah with 6 day’s to get to the location of the game and a legendary decked out expensive bus and a elite driver or two you can absolutely never fly even if it’s a game located across the map.

I've had this thought many many times. Madden gave a lot of us a very realistic laboratory to play with clock management, and game out things like accepting or deferring kick-offs to start a game.

I remember playing end of game scenarios over and over to maximize the number of plays before halftime etc.

I'd also always defer the kickoff if possible. Largely because I felt I had such an advantage in clock management at the end of the half, and getting the kickoff to start the second half after running the clock well in the first half was almost always a net positive.

Of course, part of that was that we'd usually play with 5-6 minute quarters. If you had a good running game, you could really take advantage of the shortened time to run clock, or go hurry up as needed. I'm sure on 15 minute quarters a lot of that advantage goes away.

Coast-to-coast commuter John Madden liked what he saw as he rolled across America in his suite on wheels

ON CHRISTMAS DAY, John Madden gathered his close family members and friends around his TV at 2 p.m. A documentary about him and his tall-tale life, "All Madden," was airing on Fox, and he wanted to watch it with the people he loved the most.

Many of the people in the room with him -- namely, his wife, Virginia, and sons, Joe and Mike -- had made tremendous sacrifices over the decades as Madden rose to stardom, first as a Hall of Fame coach, then as a broadcaster, then as an esports pioneer. He'd often acknowledge that he missed more of his boys' young lives than he ever wanted. "Virginia raised the kids," he'd tell friends.

But his family also had invested deeply in Madden's success, and this documentary served as a perfect coda to their family story. They were proud of him, and Madden considered his career to be theirs, too.

Thank you for sharing, Carol. That was an outstanding article and gives me a much greater appreciation for how the man lived his final days.
