If we weren't bottom of the West and bottom of the AFC I might praise Paton's resourcefulness in filling these holes... As it stands -- why the hell are we using draft picks to improve the 2021 roster on guys with expiring contracts?

We traded down from the 6th to the 7rh round 3 years from now to acquire this guy. That's as close to just signing a free agent as you can get.

Guessing AA ron doesn't want to sign on for a rebuild. :)

It's still *a draft pick* for a 3 month rental in a lost season. Demonstrates that he's more interested in signaling to his lame duck coach how invested he still is in this season as opposed to making the shrewd move and committing to a rebuild.

We need draft picks to acquire Rodgers! And then we'll need late rounders to get players when we've traded all our early picks away.
Anyway, not the end of the world, just doesn't strike me as the kind of move that a really sharp next generation GM makes.

At this point I think it's more about being able to put an NFL team on the field. It probably becomes a safety hazard at a certain point to just have a team full of practice squad level players on the field.

Remember back in the Shanny days when we were supposedly in win-now mode, and we'd just sign like random guys off the street and then start them at safety or RB the following Sunday? That's apropos of nothing, just funny to think about...
Anyway, I don't buy the player safety angle -- I think they watched the defense get demolished by D'Ernest Johnson and Vic made excuses about personnel and this is a hail mary attempt at saving this season and his job.

Could be, but I feel like if Vic were in "throw hail Marys to save my job" mode, he'd have put Lock in by now. I still feel pretty confident he isn't getting fired until the end of the season and he knows it. Coach O at LSU vibes.

Young was their starting LB and 2nd on the team in tackles, crazy they would trade him for basically nothing.

He obviously doesn't think Drew helps him win games, we know that. We especially know that given he ran Teddy out there on 3 days rest with a gimpy foot.
I think Paton feels a misguided sense of loyalty to this staff -- this is him showing that as a GM he is trying his hardest to set the coaching staff up for success... Which in any other year is exactly what you want from a GM.
I just think if this were an NBA franchise, you fire the coach, you tank the season and you acquire additional picks and there isn't so much sentimentality around needing to field a quality product, and holding on until the bitter end despite all signs to the contrary. That's a legacy old boys club NFL thing.

How often do first year GMs fire the coach midseason? I remember around the draft I think it was Hawg looked at drafts of first time GMs, and couldn't find a single example of one drafting a QB in the first round. Maybe this is another thing like that. Fangio was part of the GM interview process, maybe he feels obligated to give him the year.
And honestly, your stated goal being to tank at this point, maybe it's better for Vic to lead that charge than risk having an interim spark the team like we're seeing in Vegas.

Rams fans are pretty upset about this move, he’s been their most consistent defensive player. The only issue is the expiring contract, though of course it would’ve cost a lot more to get him if he still had time left on the contract.
Clearly Paton hasn’t given up on the season.

Talk about a shitty Monday for this guy... Goes from living in SoCal, being a super bowl contender, and playing with Aaron Donald on Sunday night and then he wakes up to all of this!

It’s a strange move. Yes, they have a young guy they want to play. But why not keep the depth in case of injury? Maybe we’ll learn more over time. But it sounds like the Broncos got a decent player at worst.

Ehhh, this has happened to him before, he was part of the Marcus Peters trade.
The Rams weren’t going to resign him and were cutting down his snaps each week. He has a much better shot at getting resigned here, this will probably help his career.

if he can help us not get utterly torched by any more off-the-street running backs, i'll call the '24 late round pick swap money well spent. . . talking about tanking (in a year with no blue chip QBs) is all well and good, but me and AO need our livers to survive the season! maybe he even turns out to be a capable player, and we re-sign him. . . given that jewell and johnson are both approaching free agency, it doesn't hurt to add some cheap depth that can actually find a gap and make a tackle. . .

If Paton hadn’t ****** up the QB and RT positions I would give him an A, but he still gets an F-, that’s generous too.

Dude your really jumping off the building about these late round draft picks that don’t even come into play for another 2 years lol.

Yeah probably character issues but this was a steal from Paton, I don’t see how anybody could find room to complain about the is addition for a 6th round pick

Honestly why should he give up on the season?
It’s ten games left and were right in the mix of the division and playoff’s. We’re legit a Quarterback change away from truly contending for the division and playoffs

It’s no coincidence our defense has gone to shit after losing Josie jewell.
Strnad is ass and has no business being on an nfl team let alone start

I mean *there ya go certain posters lol*, im pretty much ready to throw in the towel too, but this is a solid pickup for basically nothing. 4-4 through 8 with 5 divisional games left and the chiefs resembling a bloated corpse isn't the worst thing ever.....right? Maybe? Somebody plz say maybe??!?!?!

I wouldn’t give up on Strnad. I think he’s going to be a good linebacker. He wasn’t supposed to de playing yet, but rather learning little by little. Injuries forced him into having a bigger role and more snaps he was projected to have

I agree with that he’s still learning. But damn he’s bad. All the over pursuing, not staying in the gaps, missed tackles. It’s just frustrating to watch.

I’m not ready to give up on him either but he needs to step up, he should Atleast know the defense through and through after sitting a year. He looks like he doesn’t know where he’s supposed to be in alot of plays. There’s plays where he’s guarding absolutely nothing

He’s on a tough spot to fill in and he looks overwhelmed by the experience. He’s definitely not ready. I agree with you. Now we have a choice that can replace him

He has no shot of playing safety.
And surely not in Denver we have our guys. No need in wasting time on a guy whose a LB and can’t even hang wth tightend

This was a good move! Unbelievable how quickly we became decimated at LB position.
