The Ring - on Netflix - 20 years later

I saw The Ring on DVD around 2003 when I was stationed in Germany. I don't watch any horror movies with my wife, she's a romcom type or a Bourne Identity type. But we watched this one and she liked it.

I liked it.

A lot.

Back then anyways.

It was kind of the standard--this is what horror should be.

It's on netflix now. So I'm watching it. Is it all that? Or will my inner Mastershake give it a modest 7/10 since she's out of bed and her makeup sucks and I'm sober, slightly hung over?

Hm.

I'm in the middle of the rewatch now, so I need to return.

I hated the first 1:45. Not in the way you truly hate something, but more in the way that you feel a certain level of disappointment in something that’s been billed to you. It was billed as one of the scariest movies ever, and through 1:45 I was mostly scoffing at it, much as I scoffed at the Blair Witch Project for the lack of fear level and mostly the annoyance it created.

That last 10 minutes were spine-tingling, literally. I felt pins and needles creeping up my back and I was frozen. When that thing came out of the well and out of the TV, it made the whole movie worth it. I watched it on video at home, rented, not in the theater. I wasn’t aware that it was on Netflix. I’m really interested in watching it again and better assessing it as a film while knowing what’s coming this time. It led to a lot of attempts at video- or internet-themed horror movies, most of which failed.

On the rewatch it will never have the same chilling effect. Best getting the opinion of someone who's never seen it.

Missy and i enjoyed it and i do own it on DVD. Its one of the few remakes that i actually enjoy over the original (same with the first remake of The Grudge). The closet scene is the best for me.
