Still, "ugh". But at least "retirement" isn't part of the stadium name.

Empower CEO Ed Murphy was reminded stadium naming sponsors don't always last: "Frankly, we could have made a lot of different decisions in terms of best way to deploy that capital. We felt the best way was is in the community that we call home and to this organization.'' #9sports

DENVER — The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with Empower Retirement on a 21-year deal to name their stadium “Empower Field at Mile High,” it was announced on Wednesday.

The agreement, which runs through the year 2039, is pending approval by the Metropolitan Football Stadium District.

The nation’s second-largest retirement plan provider, Empower Retirement is headquartered in metro Denver and has been a team partner of the Broncos since 2015. Empower Field at Mile High will serve as home of the Broncos and more than 300 other events annually, including major concerts, international sporting matches, festivals and conventions.

It's an investment/financial firm like Invesco with a cooler name and and they are going to provide more money to help improve the stadium and probably speed up the stadium district development. I always secretly hoped it would be Chipotle Bowl at Mile High since they are a local company too, but whatever. I can think of worse names and will just call it Mile High like I always have. At least we aren't like TCF Bank stadium or some crap like that.

As in, the stadium costs so much to upkeep these days that it is impossible to maintain one without a sponsor?

Why was Mile High allowed to be called Mile High so long without needing a sponsored name?

The atrocious corporate naming began about the time Denver was looking into a new stadium.

First i can remember off the top was 3com Park, the old Candlestick. I always referred to SF stadiun as Candlestick... Until SB50 fond memories of Levi Stadium.

Why was Mile High allowed to be called Mile High so long without needing a sponsored name?

lol. . . because corporate greed-mongers hadn't thought of buying naming rights yet, and all stadiums just had regular names. . . soldier field, lambeau field, etc. . .

in this era of lame ass corporate names, this one could be worse. . . it still blows, and feels like a total fraud-- but at least it didn't get named after a bank or a credit card. . . i just hope the donkeys can actually be empowered there. . .

Looks Like the Broncos Got Hosed on Stadium Naming Deal, Expert Says (https://www.westword.com/news/denver-broncos-were-losers-in-stadium-naming-deal-expert-says-11472373)

I thought the timing of this announcement was weird. .. .why not announce in the Summer before the pre-season games etc.

Darrin Duber-Smith, a marketing professor and senior lecturer at Metropolitan State University of Denver, as well as the state's acknowledged expert on sports sponsorships, points out that what amounts to approximately $6 million per annum is just over half the $10 million-or-more fee the team originally targeted. That's only one of several indicators that Empower is the deal's big winner and the Broncos took the "L."

"On the Broncos side, it looks funky," Duber-Smith says of the agreement to call the edifice Empower Field at Mile High. "You spent three years looking. You had the name of a dead company [Sports Authority, which went belly up in 2016] on the stadium for two years, and you refused to take it down. Then you finally took it down, but you didn't replace it with another venue-naming sponsor, so people got used to the Mile High Stadium name again. Then you announced, really without any warning, that an unknown company had bought the rights — and you announced it, without disclosing very much about it. .. .

...

From the Broncos' perspective, though, the overall dollar amount "is really low." In Duber-Smith's view, Empower is paying 2001 prices for the naming rights, since the contract investment firm Invesco signed that year — the compact Sports Authority took over in 2011 — was $120 million for twenty years. "I have a long memory, and I remember the Broncos saying it costs them $10 million a year to keep up the stadium, which is why they wanted $10 to $11 million," he explains. "So if you were listening to the Broncos from three years ago, $6 million is not nearly enough.

MOtorboat
09-05-2019, 03:04 PM
i can’t speak to what they should have gotten for it. If they wanted $10 million and got $6, that’s obviously a loss. But, didn’t the naming take so long because the rights to naming the stadium were tied up in bankruptcy court for two years and the Broncos finally obtained those rights late in the summer of 2018? It was a year, not three, if my memory serves.

Shazam!
09-05-2019, 03:04 PM
It isnt ALL bad:

"Then again, in all likelihood the partnership was largely a trade: Empower has been handling the franchise's retirement accounts. According to Duber-Smith, that probably means the Broncos' half of the estimated $6 million annual allotment (the team splits the total with the Metropolitan Football Stadium District) won't all be in cash — another reason the Broncos appear interested in keeping details of the Empower covenant under wraps."

Something Ellis was probably in a rush to get done to keep making The Bowlens money

It makes logical sense, as home field advantage is a real thing, and thus empowers the team. It especially makes sense for us given how loud and engaged Denver fans are at the games.
