This is, um, a thing?

It would make for some fascinating strategy. Backup QBs would become a vital roster spot.

This rule proposal would be interesting for fantasy football strategy also!

Prepare for a lockout next year. Players never gonna go for this.

Roster would need to be expanded by several players

The only thing that's dumber than this proposal is having a 53 man roster and only being able to dress 46 on gameday.

I kinda like funky new proposals like this. It will never pass, but it's fun to think about. Imagine being so bad that you're the team everyone sits their starting QB against. Would be kinda funny.

Utterly stupid but they probably know it will get laughed down. Ultimately plants the idea of an 18 game season in everyone’s heads while they try to think of a real way to get it done

16 is perfect. The schedule practically writes itself each year. Grow it to 18 without expansion and it's a total mess. And, no, I don't want to see expansion either. If London wants a team, move the Jaguars to the AFC East (Miami to AFC South) and let Kahn's team continue it's eventual drift to the British Empire. Switching divisions is because there are direct flights from London to Boston, NYC and Toronto which will make scheduling those games far easier than flying to Indy and Nashville.

I assumed it was just have 2 preseason games and 18 reg season games.

Sounds like a cash grab.

Of course it's a cash-grab! When is the NFL NOT a "cash grab?" The whole thing has made every single one of them billionaires several times over.

"Bloomberg estimates (https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/062515/how-nfl-makes-money.asp) the NFL earned around $15 billion during the 2018 season. This is up from estimates of $14.2 billion in 2017 and $13.3 billion in 2016. And the league is showing no intentions of slowing down. Commissioner Roger Goodell has targeted $25 billion in revenue by 2027, or 6% annual growth."

And how do you think good ol' Roger, who has a $40m a year contract to justify as league commissioner, is gonna do to make earnings go up that extra 1% from 5% which it is now (Bloomberg) to meet his 6% a year target for 2027? He actually has to increase revenues more than 6% because he's now slightly behind.

Yup. You guessed it. More games.

That's how the NFL works. It's not a democracy. The owners run everything and the players have no say. You gonna stop watching the NFL if they go to 18 games? Me neither. :coffee:

I'm still going to watch. So, as far as they are concerned they've already gotten away with it.

Cugel
07-13-2019, 01:05 PM
For those of you saying "the players will never agree to it!" I was just listening to Tom Nalen and Mark Schlereth on the radio yesterday and they were saying: "You dangle a bunch of money in front of me in the form of increasing the salary cap from increased revenues, I'll go for it."

They want more money. They will agree.

Q: "What about player safety? Wouldn't you be concerned about the impact on your health from extra games?"
Tom Nalen: "No. I figured it comes with the territory. I'm gonna take care of my family. Probably by the time you get to the NFL most of the damage has already been done anyway."

THat's not true by the way medically, but the players will take the extra money and shrug off any medical risk from playing more -- even if the league does not adopt the 2 games off rule.

I like this if it means expanding rosters.

Owners should expand rosters anyway, spread the wealth more evenly among players.

There were, and rightfully so, concerns that the changes in the special teams rules would hurt some fringe players. This would mitigate that, right?

It's at least better than the old "play 18 games, get paid the same amount of money," schtick they tried to trot out earlier.

Players only play in 16 games, but they’ll be required to be paid for 18? Bet that doesn’t happen.

So is each team gonna have to keep a backup kicker and punter on their roster just for 2 games?

The kickers may pull double duty two games.

Do you guys understand how this would work? They simply talk to the TV networks about adjusting the NFL contract given that there would be two extra games. Their marketing departments have all gone over how much additional revenue they could get from everything from stadium rights, concessions, jersey sales, luxury suite rentals, and especially, AD REVENUES from the networks.

The NFL is more popular all the time. Their franchise values keep going up. They have more money.

And they can afford to be magnanimous because they will still get the bigger piece of the larger pie from 18 games.

The players will agree because they owners will avoid having to have a lockout and all the negative publicity from that. THey have discovered the carrot to dangle before the players' noses to get them to chase it.

"No lockout and more money. I'll go for that!"

The salary cap will go up. Combined with the requirement that every team must spend up to the cap means that salaries have to rise (although they should also expand roster sizes to match the need for 18 games).

That, plus eliminating the 46 man gameday rule should provide more manpower to handle the extra games. It would be easy -- just expand roster sizes to 60 and let them all suit up.

I love this idea! More games to enjoy without the fear of increased injury.
Any player can be injured in any game, any time, but the 16 game limit erases the fatigue factor.
Plus the added strategy. Teams should also be required to announce the players who are sitting
in advance for maybe a week. That way every team can prepare for mismatches, ect. Cool idea!

Good point. Shouldn't fans get a discount for paying to see a Patriots game where Tom Brady is forced to sit, not due to injury but due to some idiotic rule? If this were 2013 and you pay up front for some Broncos tickets only to find out Peyton Manning has the day off due to some rule, wouldn't you be pissed? I would. Particularly if I had to watch Brock Osweiler run the offense.
