Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died Monday, the team announced. He was 27.

Police responded to a report of an unconscious man in a hotel room in Southlake, Texas, and pronounced Skaggs dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected and an investigation is ongoing, police said.

"It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas," an Angels statement said. "Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this devastating time."

Crazy. So young, can't even fathom what went wrong beyond an underlying condition (heart or brain) or narcotics.

Really reminiscent of Darryl Kyle. Really sad.

Bizarre coincidence: Kile and Skaggs had one teammate in common - Albert Pujols.

Kile was found to have clogged arteries and there was also marijuana in his system. No idea if that relates to Skaggs. I hope not.

A medical examiner in Texas has ruled that Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died from an accidental overdose of drugs and alcohol.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said in a report released Friday that Skaggs had the powerful painkillers fentanyl and oxycodone, along with alcohol, in his system.

The 27-year-old Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in the Dallas area July 1 before the start of what was supposed to be a four-game series against the Texas Rangers. The first game was postponed.

Skaggs' family released a statement to the Los Angeles Times on Friday.
