View Full Version : NFL expects refs to call late reviews, including PI

The NFL has made tentative plans to push forward with its original plan for introducing pass interference to replay review, setting aside for now a series of tweaks suggested last month by its competition committee.

According to an update sent to its teams and tweeted Thursday, the league said it expects to have the replay official initiate all potential reviews -- including pass interference -- in the final two minutes of each half and overtime.

The committee had considered shifting such responsibility for pass interference challenges to coaches to avoid excessive game stoppages, but as ESPN reported earlier this week, coaches pushed back on that proposal because of its possible impact on their timeout strategy, among other reasons.

Coaches don’t like it because they don’t want to be wrong. They just want to bitch that the officials are wrong.

From another article, it appears what was decided is what the coaches wanted?

But as it turns out, some coaches don't want that responsibility. During conference calls last week, according to multiple sources, some of them pushed back, in part because of the impact on timeout and challenge strategy. (A coach can't challenge if he's out of timeouts.) This response mirrors the proposal most coaches advocated in March -- to convert the replay official into a "sky judge" who would alert the on-field referee whenever an egregious mistake was made.

Basically this. It's just totally gutless on the part of the coaches. They want to complain if the officials get a call wrong. We all know that. Teams have gone so far as to complain with video evidence to the league office.

So, THEORETICALLY they are unhappy about the status of refereeing in the NFL, and should want change.

Well, here's the chance to have the right to challenge calls in the last 2 minutes instead of it being automatically replay -- that delays the damn games for at least 10 minutes every damn time! Every big play has to be reviewed from 16 different angles. Every TD must be reviewed and if it's at all controversial, they have to go to super-slo-mo instant replay to determine whether some blade of grass on the sideline was touched or whether the receivers' hands juggled the ball an inch or two for a fraction of a second. Was it a catch or not a catch? Let's spend another 10 minutes while everybody stands around and they review it from every possible angle.

It's making NFL football borderline unwatchable for me some times!

Here's your chance coaches to take control of end-game reviews, and they don't want it because they might lose a timeout? So the league goes in the opposite direction where now every damn thing will be automatically reviewed, making games even LONGER!

Screw you coaches! Don't friggin' challenge if you're going to lose your precious timeout! Let the telecast get to a merciful end perferably sometime before the sun wears out and goes nova!

So basically, they’re afraid of losing the time out which means they got the call wrong. They’re afraid of being wrong. Let that sink in.

It would be surprising if it became a permanent thing. Seems like the coaches do not like it.

Hardly. Coaches aren't getting any extra challenges, and it's only auto reviewable for 4 minutes of the game.
