It's my understanding that its a developmental league, subservient to the NFL, so any player should be allowed to except a promotion as soon as its offered. However, I don't think CK qualifies for the AAF due to his years of NFL experience.

I met some of the players one night at Fuddrucker's (hamburger chain). Large men. They explained they were with the Birmingham team and that all the teams had their training camps around San Antonio due to weather concerns and ease of scrimmage games. Sounds like they are going about it the smart way if the product is good enough. Franchises in second-tier non-NFL cities (other than ATL and PHX) where overlooked players can get a chance and guys who haven't figured out that their football careers are over yet will get another chance to have the concept drilled into them. Coaches are another matter. Lots of fertile ground here.

This makes perfect sense for a developmental league 1/4 the size of a parent league. Hopefully, it's the 1st step towards what I've been saying for years, the NFL needs to set up a farm system like MLB has.

Can you provide a link that shows who is affiliated who?

I can't find a link that lays it out specifically. Maybe Abe can help you there. I don't think they are formal partnerships so much as each team can draft from specific areas where certain NFL teams are. The details online are kinda hard to find.

I'm always careful about trusting anything Wikipedia say because there sources are of unknown quality, but at least this article link me to 1 that I do consider trustworthy:

https://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2018/07/alabama_auburn_on_birminghams.html

Although the Wikipedia info did prove to be accurate, the system is a little more complicated. Although the AAF does apparently offically use the term "affiliated" to describe the relationship they have with the colleges in their region, as well as NFL & CFL clubs, I think the term "feeder colleges & clubs" (which is used to explain what is meant by affiliated in the article that I've link to) would be more accurate.

"When a player is cut or he is not in the NFL or CFL, the first thing is we look for a college affiliation," Polian told The Associated Press. "His rights are your property if he is affiliated with one of your colleges. If his college is not assigned, we go to his pro team. If the NFL team does not work, and he is in the CFL, we go to that. Finally, if he is completely unallocated, he can be put on the rights list first-come, first-serve."

So, a player that gets cut by the Broncos doesn't automatically go to Salt Lake, but to the team designated in according the regional college if the school is an "affiliated." If it's not, then they would go to Salt Lake.

chazoe60

I'll be rooting for the San Diego team as Rifle's own Ryan Moeller has made the team.

I watched this young man play almost every varsity game he participated in and it was like watching a man amongst boys. He went to CU and became an All Pac12 performer.

Easily the greatest athlete I've seen come from my tiny little high school and a very good young man. His dad was my son's HC on his youth football teams and Ryan was around enough to get a good feel on what type of young man he is and he's very impressive.

Go Fleet!!!!!!!

Manziel is locked into the CFL for another year but yeah, any other talented unemployed QB should be jumping all over this.

Its a poor man's NFL but at least it gives fans a chance to see some of their favorite players play in a league more suited for them.

Ten years ago maybe. Unfortunately my joints don't let me enjoy such things anymore. I mean, a single game? Sure. I'd have to be on the no practice old guy plan to play again the following week.

Interesting, apparently I am a Salt Lake City fan now as they are an affiliate for the Broncos. Makes sense because I know there is a large contingent of the Broncos fanbase in Utah. I might check out the next game, I don't know much about it. Be cool if they actually treat it like a developmental league:

NFL Team affiliations
These are not random. NFL Teams have player rights to AAF teams players and they are as follows:

Arizona Hotshots

Arizona Cardinals
Baltimore Ravens
Chicago Bears
San Francisco 49ers

Atlanta Legends

Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers
Jacksonville Jaguars
Washington Redskins

Birmingham Iron

New England Patriots
Buffalo Bills
Cleveland Browns
Pittsburgh Steelers

Memphis Express

Cincinnati Bengals
Indianapolis Colts
New Orleans Saints
Tennessee Titans

Orlando Apollos

Miami Dolphins
New York Giants
New York Jets
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Salt Lake Stallions

Denver Broncos
Green Bay Packers
Minnesota Vikings
Seattle Seahawks

San Antonio Commanders

Dallas Cowboys
Houston Texans
Kansas City Chiefs
Philadelphia Eagles

San Diego Fleet

Detroit Lions
Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Rams
Oakland Raiders

So if a player is on an AAF team, which of the 4 NFL teams have dibs?

None. I think it's the opposite direction. If I'm on a Broncos practice squad or sign one of those spring contracts, I may get assigned to Salt Lake.

Yep, that's correct. Any NFL team can sign someone off any AAF team.

I just looked it up, I guess its the other way around. If a team on the affiliates list drops a player, the respective AAF Team has dibs on that player. If a player starts to shine in the AAF, they are not contractually obligated to the affiliate teams and can sign with any team in the NFL. Could be interesting if they turned it into a true developmental league but right now it just seems like practice squad battles.

I might wind up jumping on the Birmingham bandwagon. Realizing that Memphis is associated with Ole Miss and Birmingham is associated with Mississippi State makes that a much easier decision.

As a Vols fan, Memphis should be the no brainer. But their uniforms are horrendous and they don't put forth a quality product.

I wonder what the line is on Arizona/Memphis? Ought to be at least 10.

BTW, I dislike the mandatory "going for 2" after every touchdown. Not that I like the extra point kick either. Both leagues get it wrong. The TD should be 7 points and then the head coach has the option to take one point off the board and go for two. Saves time and the scores will look more like traditional football scores instead of 18-12 or similar crap.

Who cares if scores "look traditional"? I just want to watch fun football. Seeing a two pointer after every score is fun.

It's fun now in part because it is unusual. Once it stops being unusual, it will become stale. Imagine a rule that said teams must do an on-side kickoff after every touchdown? In the beginning, it would be fun to watch. After a 54-51 Rams-KC game, it will get boring.

Extra points are literally the most stale/boring part of a football game. No one tunes in to watch the kicker.

The onside kick comparison is also utterly ridiculous. That would fundamentally change the game. Requiring two point conversions instead of extra points is overall a pretty minor change. Assuming two point conversions are made at a 50% rate, which they usually tend to be, the scoring will pretty much be the same as if all extra points were kicked.

Makes sense. His accuracy has been very good. A large number of incompletions were barely tipped away by DBs.

Apparently the AAF almost ran out of money to even pay their players after week 1 and had to get bailed out with a 250 million dollar investment from the Hurricanes owner. That's a pretty ominous sign.

Not unusual for a startup though. It's getting pretty good viewership on TV, and the $$ will eventually come. I hope anyway, because I enjoy watching it!

True, but I like that a coach has a choice of 1 or 2 points. Sure, 1 is more boring and still nearly automatic, but the choice itself lends more intrigue to the 2pt conversion in my mind.
