Competition committee wants to discuss increase in roughing the passer calls

The NFL's competition committee is scheduled to speak on a conference call next week about the proliferation of roughing the passer penalties, two sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

The sources said the committee is concerned about the frequency of these penalties and has voiced those concerns to the league office.

"There's some concern that the officials are going a little bit too far with some of these calls," one of the sources said.

Through three weeks, there have been 34 roughing the passer calls. Through three games last year, there had been 16, and through three games in 2016, there were 20.

Part of the issue is that the league this year made a "point of emphasis" of a 23-year-old rule that prohibits defenders from landing on the quarterback with their full body weight or driving him into the ground with excessive force. The NFL says that rule has been on the books since 1995 (Rule 12 , Section 2, Article 9) and that it made it a point of emphasis this season after hearing complaints from coaching staffs that it wasn't being enforced. The competition committee issued the following recommendation this offseason:

Exactly. I think it’s funny as shit that the Packers keep getting nailed with the penalty they helped create. Perhaps Matthews and Rodgers should practice it together so Matthews can learn it correctly. Both of those calls on Matthews were legit AF. Both looked nearly identical to the hit Barr took Rodgers out with last year.

Shit, they were at least as legit as Lindsay’s ejection and the block in the back 30 yards behind the play. The Packers of all teams bitching about this, is like the Pats bitching about being flagged for hitting the QB low or the Colts bitching about getting flagged for illegal contact. I really like that the new rule has directly affected 2 Packers games. ;)

The NFL has issued a clarification on its much-debated roughing the passer rule after three weeks of outrage from players, coaches and fans. The anticipated result, according to executive vice president Troy Vincent, is to "ensure consistency in officiating the rule."

Referees have thrown 34 flags for roughing the passer this season, more than twice the total over the same period in 2017, in part due to a point of emphasis against defenders landing on quarterbacks with all or most of their body weight. Officials have interpreted that point of emphasis in noticeably different ways, at times resulting in penalties for hits that appeared all but impossible for defenders to avoid.

In a statement, Vincent announced that the NFL competition committee had sent a video to teams that would clarify legal and illegal hits against the quarterback. The video, also released publicly, showed four examples of hits that will still draw a foul -- including one that broke the collarbone of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers last season.

The nfl is so soft. And Von probably didnt want to get fined or a penalty. but the hits that won the team Superbowl 50. Are not allowed anymore.
