Since the season is finally on the horizon I was curious to see who you all thought could be a surprise cut(s) this year. This isn’t meant to be who you want to be cut, but who could possibly be cut. I have three.

1. Jeff Heuerman
2. Darian Stewart
3. Todd Davis

If he wasn’t going to (I assume) start the year on the PUP, Shane Ray would have made my list.

2. WR Jordan Taylor

3. KR/PR/WR Isaiah McKenzie (If he didn't improve)

Demaryius Thomas is still a major name to look out for as far as a preseason cut or trade goes. If the Broncos have other receivers step up, his price tag is worth getting off the books as a late cut.

I just heard MO slap his forehead. :D

I'm hoping DT has a good year, now that he has a lot better QB throwing to him.

Yes he is. I don't want him to get the boot, but he's certainly on the table.

Watson would have been gone already had it not been for his injury. Good call.

He's still a young back, he had shown some flashes. Yeah, he hasn't been great, but at his age and state of the roster, there's no harm giving him one more run around, IMO. Typically the fact that the coaches love a player is a notch in their favor, but in this instance you'd probably score that point.

He's been a RB with a bad line and a TS led team. It would take someone special to be productive there. I don't expect great things from the man, but he can be a solid part of the crew. If he's total trash in camp and preseason, das boot.

That big young angry back Freeman will be why he's not on the team next year, imo.

I think the Broncos would need to have more then 1 receiver to step up to make him expendable this season. I don't know his contract status, but he should have plenty of trade value as long as he's still ours.

Unlike Dez Bryant no one is talking about Thomas as having lost a step, and I don't think anyone has complained about route running. Receivers still take time to develop. For the Broncos to cut Thomas the to young guys would have clearly out him.

Fact of the matter is he is not worth the cost in 2019 at all, and he is definitely headed for the chopping block AFTER this season. $14 million for 2019 just isn't going to happen, so the question is whether or not Elway plays hardball this year or not. The Broncos could save $8.5 million by cutting him before the regular season, and knowing that next year's cut is going to come, I could very easily envision Elway putting on pressure, DT's agent not budging, and a falling out this year instead of next. I'd much rather see DT have a comeback year, but nobody should be fooling themselves into thinking cutting or trading DT is still off the table.

All valid points, but there’s been no indication this will happen this year. I’m inclined to think whatever happens with DT will happen in an offseason, not a camp casualty. Denver has a history of treating it’s all time greats with respect.

The sad thing is, for me this is the game-breaking play I remember DT the most for:

In my eyes, this image alone has irreparably put him in a class below guys like Shannon Sharpe/Rod Smith/Ed McCaffrey.

The identity players of the Denver Broncos right now are Von Miller and Chris Harris Jr. Because DT isn't the identity of this team, and because he's not established himself at a level of a Sharpe/Smith/McCaffrey, Elway wouldn't face as much backlash cutting or trading him if enough viable receiving threats emerged.

If that's all you can remember I think that's short sighted. Miller and Harris were also in that game, as well Manning, and none of them played well. That doesn't mean they're great players. Like Thomas the too did not play well in that game. Champ Bailey burnt to a crisp a couple years earlier in a divisional playoff game at home is that all you remember about him?

Champ made big plays in the 4th quarter consistently too, and put his body on the line in the run game to help his team. DT disappears in the 4th quarter consistently, and in recent years has been known more drops than big time catches. Sad, but it's true. The production is there, but the momentum changing plays are not.

Well I don't agree, you're defining Thomas by one play yet Champ was burnt to crisp in divisional playoff game but you'll that let slide. Both have made a lot plays for the Broncos. How much consternation has gone on around here about inconsistent play at the quarterback position. I'm pretty sure receivers production generally tied their quarterbacks. As far as the drops I think that's way over played.

Who in this thread has advocated for him to be cut? We're simply projecting who surprising camp casualties might be, and given that we just used a high draft pick on a similar player to DT, who is a highly paid and aging player, it's not the most far-fetched scenario. No one is yelling for us to cut him that I've seen.

We're talking $12M....That's as of right now the 9th WR in the league. When he's had an actual QB throwing to him, he's put up top 5 numbers (arguably top 3 even). Last year was a down year, no doubt, but most of that is largely due to decreased targets and poor QB play... He is worth that money if our QB play improves.

In fairness though, the vitriol surrounding DT gets old, it shouldn't be shocking that those of us who don't share that vitriol, get a tiny bit annoyed that his name always pops up right away in threads like this.

Who? Where? This is a thread about surprise cuts.

The Cowboys cut their #1 receiver this offseason over salary and locker room issues, and around the league we are seeing the WR position gradually becoming more of a system-based position than ever. The Broncos are paying their WRs nearly $30 million this year, and are set to pay $36 million next year. For both 2018 and 2019, this is #2 in the league. If anyone honestly doesn't think both WRs are on the trade market, they are only fooling themselves. And as we saw with TJ Ward, trade market sometimes means cut market.

Again, I don't see it happening this year, but unless Elway can squeeze a paycut from him, the positional spending just doesn't add up with what playoff teams spend. ( https://overthecap.com/positional-spending )

Did I say this thread....and people say I'm defensive... Just saying, anytime one of these threads come up it's always DT and Von because "they cost too much" the Von talk kinda quieted down pretty hard after SB 50 though, but it'll be back. People love to worry about other people's money in football... This isn't the first time this has come up...we talk every freaking offseason about how DT needs cut or traded because someone gets obsessed with his price tag.

People get way too concerned about how much a player costs...Let the FO worry about that. At this point it's not even a surprise cut, it's a completely unfeasible cut due to cap hit. Next year, we may see him cut depending on this season's production, but I expect him to have a good enough year with a solid QB option that we'll put this to rest for awhile.

I absolutely care about the cap impact relative to production of any given player. No I don't care how much it takes out if the owners wallet since it's not my money, but I do care about too much of the cap being tied up in certain players thus hurting the team elsewhere.

I absolutely care about the cap impact relative to production of any given player. No I don't care how much it takes out if the owners wallet since it's not my money, but I do care about too much of the cap being tied up in certain players thus hurting the team elsewhere.

Why? You've been a fan long enough you should know by now that if Elway wants a player, the cap isn't going to stop him. He makes it all work out. Cap numbers can be manipulated and Elway has shown that he's very good at massaging the cap. Why spend time getting wound up about how much cap hit a player takes? Especially to the point that it makes you want (not necessarily you, but some) our top player gone.

Just chillax and let Elway handle the cap.

It was UA! He suggested that Thomas could be cut this year, and now he is casually backpedaling while the thread burns!

Oh the threads not burning yet. Smoldering maybe. There hasn't been any gasoline dumped on it yet so it's just causing a lot of smoke.

Your post was in this thread, so I'm going to reasonably assume that you're talking about this thread and the conversations in this thread. As far as guys being paid too much, the league has economics to it. For X amount of $, the player should be performing at a level consistent with what other players at his position earning that amount of money make. That's the way the league works.

Guys get cut over money. Guys get cut so young guys can play. Last year, TJ Ward was making a relatively reasonable salary for his accomplishments and history, but boom $4.5 million off the books because the Broncos wanted to get one of their young safeties into the lineup and wanted financial flexibility. If Elway was willing to cut CJ Anderson and TJ Ward over $4 and $4.5 million, DT definitely is not immune. The only thing missing has been any kind of depth at WR, which Elway has now spent multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks on the position over the last two drafts.

So with the young guys now here, and the salary still where it is, DT is definitely in a position to be cut next offseason should he not have a great year. If the young guys emerge sooner (low possibility), it's possible Elway tries to trade and then all bets might be off should his agent raise a stink. With Case, it's entirely possible DT bounces back, has a Pro Bowl year, and gets paid his full $14 million next year.

If someone can present me some compelling evidence of someone better, I'll back off my statement. I'm seriously asking who else is better?

From PFF

Demaryius Thomas was the team's most reliable red zone weapon in 2017 - he caught 10-of-17 targets for 78 yards and five touchdowns. All told, he generated a passer rating of 109.8, the seventh-best mark among qualifying receivers.

https://t.co/90Sbvs92gH

That was with Trevor Siemian throwing to him who was one of PFF's lowest graded QB's in the redzone (Keenum was one of the top 15 graded QBs)

Did you see this Offense last year? I have to see a major change to have any confidence at any position. Both Sanders and DT were looking totally defeated by Week 8.

Again, need improvment at QB and OLine and hopefully DT and Sanders return to form.

Ok, again. Even defeated, who played better? DT is a bright spot on an offense otherwise devoid of talent. Outside him and Sanders we've got zilch for talented players.

I get they need to play better, the question is, who played better than them to be considered "our best player on offense"

By this logic I should never worry/complain about anything. Don't worry about who we draft, Elway will take care of that. Don't worry about what play we call on 3rd and 6, the coaches will take care of that. Don't worry about DT's drops, he'll take care of that.

We can't do anything about anything regarding the broncos, so by your logic we should just not worry about any of it because someone else will deal with it. Not exactly how fandom works.

I still get upset, and it ruins Monday and some of Tuesday for me. But thanks to Vance Joseph, I know that my Broncos are DOMINATING on Wednesdays, so it is hard to stay upset with all my excitement.

As far as other "surprise" cuts go veteran-wise, Jared Veldheer is another name I could foresee if he performs terribly in camp. Darian Stewart doesn't make sense from a cap perspective, and he's still a steady hand. The Broncos don't save that much by cutting Watson, so it's likely he stays on as a swing guard/swing tackle.

If Veldheer flames out there will be massive problems up front. Again. There is so much riding on him solidifying this OLine.

I think the name to watch up fromt is Connor McGovern. Loved what i saw from him. With Leary at least we have a shot at two solid Gs.

The defense looked totally defeated by week 8. The entire team and especially VJ looked totally defeated! Let's see what Keenum can do before we say that DT and Emmanuel are washed up!

Courtland Sutton and Royce Freeman look like starting material so far. Chubb was easily the best defender in the entire draft and was compared with Myles Garrett, the #1 overall pick last season in terms of talent. There is no doubt they got a real playmaker with this guy. So, the roster has been substantially upgraded from last year.

And Sutton is the future #1 as soon as he can gain the necessary experience. THis is DT's last season in Denver so he is going to go all out because production is his only way of convincing another team to pick him up next off-season. With an actually GOOD QB (not great but accurate) throwing to him he should be fine!

Last year was partly terrible coaching. Partly it was having by far the worst QB roster in the NFL. Partly that was John Elway's fault for going into the season without a veteran QB who could actually do the job if Trevor flopped or was injured.

And that stems from Elway's idiot obsession with proving himself right about Paxton Lynch.

Well, Paxton might still be on the roster this season (boo!) but he's not starting outside of injury, and if Paxton wins the backup battle with Chad Kelly then they will cut Kelly and could sign another veteran QB, just in case.

So, hopefully they have a veteran who knows what he is doing out there at QB.

Since the season is finally on the horizon I was curious to see who you all thought could be a surprise cut(s) this year. This isn’t meant to be who you want to be cut, but who could possibly be cut. I have three.

1. Jeff Heuerman
2. Darian Stewart
3. Todd Davis

At this point, Lynch shouldn't be a surprise cut, but I would be absolutely shocked if Elway were to nut up and do the right thing. Lynch will be taking someone who is far more talented roster spot for yet another year.
