Joe Girardi’s tenure as New York Yankees manager ended Thursday after a decade that produced just one World Series title for a team that expects to win every year.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made the announcement five days after the Yankees lost to Houston in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series.

“Everything this organization does is done with careful and thorough consideration, and we’ve decided to pursue alternatives for the managerial position,” Cashman said in a statement.

New York does not have an obvious candidate to replace him. The Yankees are the third of the 10 postseason teams to remove managers, joining Boston and Washington.

Idiotic. The Yankees were a great story this season. They weren't even expected to break .500 by a lot of people. I wish my Tigers hadn't already hired Ron Gardenhire

The Yankees never finished below .500 in his 10 yrs as coach.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I think Girardi has wanted out for awhile.

He had a great run, but the Yankees haven't been below .500 since 1992. I'm not sure that's Girardi doing that.

I think he just finished a 4 yr contract and if he insisted on not being a lame duck they would have extended him before this season. But clearly he had differences with Cashman, ownership or both.

Ozzie Guillen should be the obvious replacement.

Dang. Those Astros are like a hurricane themselves. Put John Farrell out of work, then Girardi out of work. Maybe put Dave Roberts out of work if Roberts continues to overmanage like he did Wednesday night.

Aaron Boone will be named the next manager of the New York Yankees, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Boone has been an ESPN baseball analyst since 2010. He has never managed or coached at any level.

The Yankees' decision to replace Joe Girardi ultimately came down to Boone and San Francisco Giants bench coach Hensley "Bam Bam" Meulens.

After Girardi completed the final season of a four-year, $16 million contract, sources told Olney that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman recommended to owner Hal Steinbrenner that the team change managers.
