There will not be a bye the numbers for week five (it is our bye week). Probably going to try and keep the commentary brief this week. I've got a final paper due on one of my classes today so I am swamped this week.

Offensively
Total YPG: 13th with 341.2
1st Downs per game: 8th with 21.2 (this number dropped by a large margin this week as we saw our offense really struggle)
3rd down percentage: 4th with 47 (was 52% last week)
Time of Possession: 4th with 32:38 (this surprisingly did not change a whole lot this week, despite our offensive struggles, it was 32:32 last week)
Total Points: 11th with 98

Passing
Yards per game: 23rd with 198.2 (this stat has essentially fallen off the map the last two games, really struggled hard via the air)
Interceptions thrown: 19th with 4 (we're tied with a lot of teams here, we obviously did not have any this week)
QB rating: 19th with 89.0 (this actually went up from 87 last week, still a poor number)
Passing 1st downs: 16th with 46
Percentage of passes for first downs: 14th with 36.5
Plays of 20+ yards: 9th with 14
Plays of 40+ yards: 22nd with 1
Sacks: 23rd with 13
QB Hits: 21st with 25 (an average of 6.5 per game, we had 100 QB hits total last year which averages 6.5 per game. The notion that our pass blocking is improved at least at this point appears to be slightly flawed. We also only had 11 sacks this time last year compared to 13 so far this year)
Touchdowns: 6 with 7

Rushing
Average yards per game: 3rd with 143.0
Rushing 1st Downs: 3rd with 30
Percentage of rushing plays for 1st: 8th with 23.1 %
Rush of 20 or more yards: 3rd with 4
40 or more yards: 4th with 1
Fumbles: 18th with 2
Touchdowns: 10th with 3

Defensively
Average Yards per game: 1 with 260.8
1st downs per game: 1st with 15
3rd down percentage: 2nd with 26%
Penalties: 17th most penalized with 27
Penalty yards: 11th most with 253
We have not caused any fumbles caused this year...

Passing
Average yards per game:10th with 210 YPG
TD allowed: 8 (we've also had more passing TD's scored on us, than we ourselves have scored)
Interceptions: 6th with 4
1st down percentage:6th with 31.3 (This is a bright spot. A low percentage of passes completed are completed for a first down)
Plays for 20 yards or more: 11th with 10
Plays for 40 or more: 4th with 1 (we also aren't giving up big plays. Basically, we're forcing teams to take a lot of short stuff, we are covering the deep ball well)
Sacks: 14th with 10 (hopefully this number starts going up after the bye and getting people back in the mix)
QB rating: 15th with 88.7

Rushing
Yards per game: 1st with 50.8 (seriously, who is next? We're killing dominate backs this year. The record for fewest since 1980 was Pittsburgh in 1982 with 762 considering we've only played powerhouse backs so far, we could actually beat this)
Touchdowns:1st with a big fat freaking goose egg.
The longest rush we've allowed this year is 21 yards.
Plays over 20 yards: 1st with 1
Plays over 40 yards: 1st with another goose egg.
1st downs...9...we've allowed freaking 9 rushing first downs lol. Obviously we're in 1st.
1st down percentage 1st with 10.7 percent

A little light this week I know, as always feel free to add anything I've missed or any interesting stats you've found on your own.

*edit* corrected passing defense statistic.

The defensive statistics and offensive rushing statistics are very encouraging. I would like to see our pass rush get a little better, and I think it will when Shane Ray comes back, and I would obviously love to see our passing offense improve. If we can tune those two areas up this is going to be a damn good team that can go deep into the playoffs. Hopefully VJ and his awesome staff can solve the issues we have at this point.

Touchdown stats for Siemian will be interesting since like 10 qbs have 7 TDs. Siemian started great and last 2 week's has fallen back. Hope its not a trend. He had 6 TDs after week 2.

I really actually think we'll be ok. Hopefully this coaching staff can watch the tape for the last two weeks and adjust.

The biggest issue last week is it's like McCoy said "hey, their secondary sucks, lets go for the homerun ball every play we can" Had we focused on shorter high percentage passes to keep the ball moving and more importantly get the ball out of trevor's hands quickly, we'd have been ok. The biggest problem in re-watching the game is we'd try these deep routes and nothing was open down the field, Trevor would hold the ball because he was waiting on the play to come open, and then rather than throwing it away, he just drifted around until we took a big sack.

He needs to be more willing to throw the ball away, but at the same, we've gotta stop trying to force the deep ball before first firmly establishing a short passing attack. You dink and dunk them, then when they adjust to stop you from tearing them up short THEN you throw deep on them for big gains. We just sort of missed a step this week.

Its good that he's obviously not going the "Captain Check-down" route, but sometimes, well, you gotta check-down. The good news is that comes with experience

There isn't honestly always a checkdown. There has been and he's badly missed them, but last week for example, the DB's had them locked down more than you would have anticipated.

This is definitely worth examining in detail. Good job!

Basically coming into this season we had a terrible offense with mediocre to bad QB play, a rock bottom OL, questions at the RB spot (including CJ Anderson who was overpaid last year for the amount of production they got, due to injury), no pass catching threat among the TEs, and a young and inexperienced QB. So dubiously did the Broncos view Trevor Siemian that despite his being last year's starter they tried desperately to give Paxton Lynch every chance to beat him out of the job.

Trevor: Only Trevor won the job. Now he's the 19th rated QB in the league this year. That's about mediocre (average would be 16th so he's slightly worse than average). That's about as fair a measure of his play as we could want.

But, it's only fair to remember that he's only beginning his second year as a starter, and defensive coordinators are throwing all kinds of exotic looks at him, to try and fool him because of his youth and inexperience. Delayed blitzes, disguised blitzes, bringing extra defenders into the box to add pressure, everything a DC can think of that he might not be ready for they are trying to fool him with. So, for the first time DCs have some ideas what Trevor does well and where he struggles or has inexperience and hasn't proven it yet.

And the Broncos are trying to avoid having to put the entire offensive load on Trevor because he can't handle that, not yet. He's not playing at an elite QB level where you can be down by a couple of scores in the 4th quarter and say "here's the ball kid, just air it out and make something happen!" And hope that anything good would happen.

So, having a good running game is absolutely critical to wining games this year. They absolutely are not going to be able to just have him throw much more than about 35 times a game and have a chance to win.

That's where Jamal Charles is so key. And the improvement to the OL in running the ball. Third in rushing is absolutely great and has to continue.

That is the Broncos formula for success this year.
