View Full Version : Kiszla: What's it going to take to get Elway signed to a new contract?

Nearly 200 days ago, Ellis told me: “I don’t really see (John) working anywhere else. And I feel it’s important I do everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen. Look at his record. Quite frankly, I could see teams calling and saying: ‘Hey, we’d like to have a discussion.’ I have no interest in losing him. I have every interest in keeping him.”
Well, life moves pretty fast, doesn’t it, Ferris?
Shortly after Ellis pledged his commitment to keeping Elway as the guru of football operations, I read a strange story about a guy in Maryland so irked about a family member sneaking a bite of his grilled cheese sandwich he chased everybody out of the house and barricaded himself and his meal inside until the cops arrived.
Which was pretty weird. But no weirder than: The Broncos have been in contract negotiations with Elway since at least October. And what’s happened so far? Zippo. Could Elway ever work for another NFL team? Oh, I doubt it, too. But stranger endings have happened.

I've been kind of ignoring this story for a while, because I just assumed it would get done. But I'm starting to get a little nervous. Am I the only one? As little as, oh, seven or eight months ago could we have pictured a world in which Wade Phillips left to go to another team? I don't know what's happening at Dove Valley, but I would feel a lot better if this got taken care of.

You and me both. I think it's an ownership stake that he's wanting, but who knows.

It is a little odd it's dragged on this long. It's hard to imagine Elway ever going anywhere else, but it's not looking like the 100% slam dunk it was back when this first became a story.
I dunno, but just be sure to charge it all against this years cap: We don't need to go through THAT again.... ;)

Thirty-four years ago, when John Elway was prepared to sign his first NFL contract, he didn’t have any idea which town he would call home.
He just knew it wouldn’t be Baltimore.
Now, nearly two decades after hanging up his cleats and seven years into his tenure as a Broncos executive, Elway is in the middle of another contract discussion. And this time, he has said he is quite certain of where he’ll be.
“I look forward to being here with the Broncos for a long time,” he said in May, adding that he didn’t have “any doubt” a new contract would be signed before the season began.
Given Elway’s stature with the franchise and the state of Colorado, and given his unmatched track record while in the front office, the question is not so much about whether a deal will get done, but how and when.

It's simple but no one can say it. They are waiting for Mr B to pass.

I'd like to see Elway get a stake in ownership, he's earned it and would bring the same stability and credibility to the ownership situation that he brought when Bowlen convinced him to restore stability and credibility in the wake of Hurricane Joshua.
Promote Matt Russell to Elway's position and hire Scot McCloughan to Russell's old role. The Broncos would have the best (and drunkest) FO in all the NFL.

If only a Cheatriot fan were around to explain this (it's actually kind of interesting, because the way we paid Elway and Davis for the '98 season has long since become a completely legal totally routine NFL practice: You're welcome, other 31 teams.)

Stan Kroenke has & is keeping an eye on the lack of an extension between the #Broncos & John Elway, Elway wants a piece of ownership.

Really? I missed that.
I'm always ready to argue against other team's fans (mainly Patriots) that think the Broncos somehow received an unfair competitive advantage with the gaming they did in 1998 (Answer: they didn't), but I was unaware that the shell game we played then is now "legal" under the salary cap. Are you sure? Can you provide a reference?

Don't converted signing bonuses on contract extensions basically work the same way: The player gets another big chunk of money now, but the bulk doesn't hit the teams cap until so much later there's a good chance the player will already be retired?
There's a good argument signing bonuses in general have worked like that ever since the shenanigans SF and Dallas pulled passing Deion Sanders back and forth between them, and we just took it to the logical extreme: Pay a player a huge chunk of money for a single final year, but spread the cap hit over multiple future seasons.
Since the team still takes the full cap hit eventually it's fine in principle, as long as no one tries going to the even greater extreme of literally "mortgaging the future" by spending its next decade of cap money to sign a dozen or two All Pros for 2-3 seasons now.

Cap money can only be prorated for the length of the contract. I don't recall anyone but quarterbacks receiving contracts large enough to approach a decade.

Sure: Pro-rate it a bonus for the length of a multi-year contract, then when the guy retires next year you eat the remaining cap hit then instead of eating the whole contract this year. That's functionally no different than what we did with Elway.

Joel knows that. He's just tweaking the Pestriot fans around here who still believe it's a valid talking point.

Elway is the reason I became a fan of the Denver BRONCOS in the late 80s. I sure hope he'll always be a part of our BRONCOS, and I believe he's earned his piece of the ownership. I'd be surely disappointed if it didn't happen.

Well, if you believe Woody Paige, this sounds promising:
Elway is about to become the league's highest-paid executive vice president-general manager.
He again has earned the right.
The Broncos and Elway are negotiating a long-term agreement that could be finalized privately this week and should be announced publicly before training camp begins July 27.
"We're working to get it done,'' Joe Ellis, Broncos CEO and president, told The Gazette exclusively. "We've had some productive discussions in the last week or so and will keep talking. John's an important part of our organization, and we want to make sure he's here for a long time.''
Elway, I believe, has been offered $30 million-$35 million for a five-year extension, which would be his biggest contract as player or executive.
An additional title - chief operating officer - may be added, with Ellis continuing as the CEO and president and one of the three trustees of the Bowlen Family Trust, which is the majority owner of the franchise since Bowlen's announced retirement because of his worsening Alzheimer's disease. The trust has control of more than 60 percent of the Broncos, with Pat Bowlen's brother, John Bowlen (who primarily lives in Canada, but regularly attends owners' meetings), possessing nearly 40 percent.
It was rumored, and published, that the new negotiations involving the Broncos and Elway's first and only agent, Marvin Demoff, would include another opportunity for Elway to obtain a piece of the Broncos' ownership. But credible sources say that aspect of the proposition is untrue.

What tf does he have to do to get a stake in ownership? He's exactly what the Bowlen Trust needs.

I think it's some kind of clause from the previous owner.
