View Full Version : WR Competition

The DP had a good reminder about the WR depth and competition this year... Should be a position of strength based on the depth chart - I think Bennie Fowler and Jordan Taylor have both flashed some elite ability. Then we've got the 2 rookies and perennial underachiever Cody Latimer. You could argue that four guys all have a crack at the #3 WR spot - though I think McKenzie will be used more as a specialist/slot specialist, whereas Fowler and Taylor can be used inside or outside.

What are your WR depth chart predictions? I'm thinking Fowler breaks out this year and kind of ignoring the slot receiver position for the sake of discussion:

1.) DT
2.) ES
3.) Fowler
4.) Taylor
5.) Latimer
6.) McKenzie
7.) Henderson

For a year and a half now, the Broncos have boasted a lengthy list of receivers but no clear third receiver, no reliable pass catcher behind their Pro Bowl duo. With a new coaching staff and a new offense, the emphasis this offseason has turned to find speed and power and versatility across the board on offense.

Enter rookies Carlos Henderson and Isaiah McKenzie, drafted in the third and fifth rounds, respectively, who boast quickness and smarts but also are raw.

IMO, Henderson will be in the #3-4 spot by week 12 or so.

I'd be surprised if Fowler makes the 53.

He was our best #3 WR in 2015 and then got hurt last year... I think he's got his work cut out for him but I'm rooting for him. He and AJ Derby have won me over making tough catches in traffic the last couple years. Latimer was good on special teams last year though, so it might come down to which guy can be more versatile.

Based on what? Tell me more as I don't know much about him.

Isn't he the WR from Louisiana Tech? If he's the same guy I'm thinking of, he's a strong athletic guy with excellent speed. 5'11" 200 4.4 speed.

He's a guy who's limited in the route tree right now, but he can be a gadget guy who can play tailback and WR. My guess is we'll find a way to get him several touches a game, not just because he's fast, but because he's a playmaker who can break tackles and make guys miss.

My guess is 4 spots are already locked up:

1.) DT
2.) ES
3.) Henderson
4.) McKenzie

That leaves 1, maybe 2 spots:

5.) Latimer (makes the team because of improved play and draft status).
6.) Taylor

My guess is Fowler is the odd man out and is a prime candidate for a trade.

7.) Fowler

Dt
Es
Henderson
Latimer
McKenzie (if we keep 6, then fowler 5, McKenzie 6)

It's pretty much already set this way now.

Henderson is starting slot day 1. Make no mistake

Henderson will be #3 week 1, it will be his job to lose.

Taylor and Fowler will have s shot on the team but not as #3 in the slot.

I have two takeaways from this thread thus far -

1.) I had no idea everyone was so high on Henderson. The consensus seems to be that he's penciled in as our starting slot WR - or at least will be incorporated into the offense to get him touches.

2.) It seems Sunshine, Latimer and Fowler will be competing for 1 or maybe 2 spots. In which case I can see how Fowler seems like the odd man out. I just remember him making tough catch after tough catch in 2015. Meanwhile Latimer has had 3 years in a row where he talks about how he didn't quite get it the year before but things are about to click for him in the upcoming year. I'll believe it when I see it.

Latimer is dead man walking. He always seems to have an excuse.

Rookie WR's by and large drink d their rookie year. Except for my man Eddie Royal. Look at what Decker and Thomas did. Not impressive.

Hopefully the WR corp can jell.

Henderson should start in the slot immediately. He's obviously a lock to make the team based on being a current draftee, same with McKenzie. Henderson is good and will be an upgrade there.

I agree with most everyone else too - someone will be the odd man out. I suspect it's not Latimer - he's still cheap and was a high draft pick, plus he's incredibly valuable on special teams. I'd be surprised if he didn't make it.

I liked Fowler in 2015, but I'm beginning to think he's just a guy. He hurt us in the Titans game last year too, dropping an easy TD. He could miss the cut.

Latimer also blocks like a damn boss and I am telling you guys he is a good wr. He has some hands on him. He catches everything. Excuses and talk and hes still better than fowler and sunshine. If he ever does get it then look out. For now he is a shit for brains who is still a great 3rd/4th

Having hands is an important part of being a wide receiver.

Career totals

Rec #1: 16 rec, 168 yards, 1td

Rec #2: 16 rec, 209 yards, 2td

Neither are "great" 3rds.

I think Fowler was far closer to being ready for NFL than Latimer, and I don't blame Latimer's lack of development solely on him. Both because of the college system they played in, Latimer has the better potential though and he's never let the teams perfectly thrown PO hopes bounce off his face mask. Have I mentioned that the college spread is a ******* disease?

Fowler plays ST's too, btw, so that's not the only determining factor.

If Henderson isn't ready Sunshine (barf) might be the dark horse starter, imo, either at the slot or moving Sanders to slot.

Why do you dislike Sunshine? He made some excellent plays last year and was one of Mannings favorites the year before.

Do you dislike white WR's? :heh:

I don't dislike him, he's an ok player.

Btw, not just white WR, pretty much any white player in any sport; football, basketball...bowling.

That's why the Noguts suck, too many gringos.

Thanks. Not suggesting rookies as the #3 & #4 receivers. Just stating they have positions locked up with Latimer & Taylor possibly fighting for the last one or two spots.
