In spite of how the eye candy intros this NFLN segment, this is either "Top 5 QBs of the '80s & '90s," or "Top 5 QBs of David Carr's Childhood. So although I'm happy to see Elway listed as #1, it was compiled by someone who didn't take the time to watch game film of any QB that came into the league before 1983. He also didn't include anyone that was still playing at the time.

Woody Paige alluded to Elway's contract impasse today... Can you imagine the leverage that Elway has in those negotiations? He's probably asking for the world, and rightfully so.

Went to a cards broncos preseason game at Sun Devil Stadium. Got there super early. You could go down field level and watch warmups.

Stood next to Simon Fletcher. Mountain of a man.

Then watched Elway throw 40 yard frozen rope out routes. Effortless. Put it in context watching him on TV.

Guys like Vick, Favre, Rogers, and Flacco are probably in the discussion too in terms of pure arm talent. Vick, for my money, had the best pure arm talent I've seen since Elway retired. Dude could throw the ball a mile and make it look effortless.

I don't remember the game, but it was relatively early (80s or early 90s), I remember a game where Elway was either rolling to the right on a naken boot or the like, or maybe just drifting to the right. He must have been near the numbers on the right and threw back across his body to the numbers on the other side of the field and maybe 60+ yards downfield. Must have been 75+ yards in the air, and it wasn't one of these moon shots like a lot of bombs, this was more of a line drive.

Incredible arm.

Yep, I think they were close to mid field, elway maybe just a shade to the left of the center, hit's smith at the goal line and he kind of falls across for a TD. Smith's first catch or TD I believe.

The biggest thing I remember about Elway was DC's conundrum in dealing with him.

In his first few years the thought was to flush him from the pocket. So they flushed Elway who promptly murdered their defense with down field bombs on a rope.
Next DCs thought they'd contain him in the pocket, and Elway continued to murder their defenses with the time he had to select his target.

No other QB in the history of football was able to do that, therefore Elway is GOAT.

No, he is a popstar but apparently on his next record he is thinking or trying to get some metal musicians involved. He is probably going to try to go in a "babymetal" direction but i know you do not know who they are either. Basically pop music meets heavy metal. lol

I remember being at a SB party where about 50 people were jumping up and down and hugging each other. It was crazy the entire game the electricity in the air. It just had a different feel than the previous SB losses. And you had to live through 4 of them and all the Johnny Carson jokes on late night television about the Broncos being SB losers to understand it. The whole country was laughing at the Broncos as if they were the worst team in football instead of the second best.

But, in that game against the Packers, everybody just felt it from the beginning. "This one is going our way."

Any fan that joined the Broncos bandwagon and did not experience those crushing Super Bowl disasters only to go on to glory will NEVER understand what that true redemption felt like. They could win 10 SBs and nothing will come close to fill those 97-98 victories and what they meant. The Broncos changed their whole history and identity at that point.

Mel Kiper's highest-graded quarterbacks ever for the NFL draft:

1. John Elway, Stanford
Draft class: 1983

Pick: No. 1 overall, Denver Broncos (Um, Mel - the Broncos didn't draft Elway, but whatever...)

What I wrote at the time: "Perhaps the best evaluation of his talents was given by Cardinals coach Paul Wiggin, who said: 'He's got the confidence and field instincts of John Brodie, the special human qualities of Archie Manning, and the physical attributes of Terry Bradshaw.' In my final evaluation, Elway received the highest grades one can achieve in all categories. He has no discernible weaknesses and is the prototype QB. Without question Elway is a can't-miss All-Pro NFL QB who has the ability to make a place for himself in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

Career notes: Elway started 231 games for the Broncos and won two Super Bowls to close out his 16-year NFL career. His 300 career touchdown passes rank 12th all time. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
