Andrew Mason‏Verified account @MaseDenver 30m30 minutes ago

Andrew Mason‏Verified account @MaseDenver 29m29 minutes ago

Nicki Jhabvala‏Verified account @NickiJhabvala 16m16 minutes ago

Vance Joseph on Broncos run def.: "I think a combination of the frequency of runs and the front seven's mechanics, we got to get better."

Andrew Mason‏Verified account @MaseDenver 16m16 minutes ago

Joseph says part of the reason the Broncos struggled against the run was b/c the offense wasn't scoring, so opponents could run it more.

Andrew Mason‏Verified account @MaseDenver 15m15 minutes ago

Run defense "was a big-picture issue" last year, Joseph said ... not solely on the defense itself.

Honestly, I like most of what he's saying right now. We'll see how this team looks in a few months though. It's great to talk a big game, we'll see what he delivers.

Vance Joseph, on improving the running game: "We've got to block better up front -- and we will."

Yup. With no left tackle. Oh, well, maybe Ryan Clady will step into the Way-Back-Machine and go back to 2008 when he had two healthy knees and they can sign him!

Man, when we draft a LT who plays on par with Okung's worthless season you're going to be so happy, Cugel.

Not in the first round! Best Player Available! NO reaches! Broncos need an offensive playmaker: Day 1 IMPACT player! We want a guy who can step on the field and start and excel. And there are guys who fill that bill at positions of need:

BEST Option for first round: #1 - TE OJ Howard, or David Njoku
#2nd best - RB Dalvin Cook or Christian McCaffrey. (Leonard Fournette will be long gone).
#3rd best - WR - John Ross

T in the 2nd or 3rd round. If you don't draft a TE in the first, then get one in the first 4 rounds. This draft is very deep at TE. Nobody in this draft is likely to start at LT and be any good their first year. And we can't waste another year of this elite defense while Aquib Talib, TJ Ward and Darien Stewart get older!

There's lots of defensive stars in the draft too, so a first round TE, 2nd round DE, 3rd round T, maybe also a RB. That would be a good draft. They need about 3 solid starters from this draft.

The draft has not been kind to Denver in recent years:

2016: 1st round Paxton Lynch , 2nd round Adam Gotsis.
2015: 2nd round Ty Sambrailo, 3rd round Jeff Heurmann.
2014: 2nd round Cody Latimer, 3rd round Michael Schofield.
2013: 2nd round Montee Ball, 3rd round Kayvon Webster (decent player but never started so that's not a hit).
2012: 2nd round: Brock Osweiler, 3rd round Ronnie Hillman.
2011: 2nd round: Rahim Moore, Orlando Franklin, 3rd round Nate Irving.

That's quite a lot of busts in high rounds. Not all players will hit for anybody, but that is not a good batting average in the 2nd round. They need to do better than that.

And drafting for need can be a disaster: Exhibit A - 1998 1st round pick WR Marcus Nash. Urf.

Those reach LT's can probably play on par with Okung. I wish we'd just sign Dunlap and be done with it. He's not very good. Neither was Okung. Sign someone like that, get another guy who can play RT so Watson can be our backup LT, and be done with it.

It's not so much about how good the other two are as it is how little experience they had. That's my understanding from what I've read.

Nah. A lot of anaylsts will say things like 'he won't live up to that draft status but will be good' or shit like that. At least the good ones. I also think Mayock is correct more than half the time.

injuries

Sam pro might be decent, but I think he's toast on account of injuries. Injuries suck.

Cam is the only prospect this year. He's a mauler. The other two are fine, but high risk picks that I'd steer clear from at 20. Most of what I gather is that Bolles is the dude, but I just don't know. I'm so conservative, which is why McCaf at 20 is just so stable a choice. If not him, then BPA like Cunningham, Peppers, or Reddick. Even Ross is fine. I think Njoku is actually close to a 20 so I wouldn't complain, but I would be a bit disappoint.

oh, sure-- call it an incomplete grade on sampro rather than a fail, but i agree that he's probably toast. . . dude looked as helpless as a little fluffy baby bunny last time he was out there. . . i will defer to our new coaching staff if they think they can get it out of one of those tackles, but yea-- on paper they don't look all that thrilling. . . i am fine with any of the other guys you listed, although i would be a bit disappointed with ninjaku as well. . . reddick would be my preference if we don't take a tackle, and i'm fine with c-mac as well. . .

I think McCaff at 20 isn't conservative at all. I think it's actually really risky in the sense that there are more than enough RB's in the draft. I think it's a trap in that sense. But, BPA is the way to go - aside from the obvious 'prospect 1 being as good as 2, but 1 is at a stacked position'.

does it change things if you think of him as a full-time, "starting" slot receiver?

No. Because he's going to another position of strength. It is my opinion that we should be able to get everything we need out of the backs that we have. We could use another WR, but not early on. Especially since we carried so many of them last year - someone should be on the team that can do that as well. JMO.

I see what you mean. I just see McCaff as a low-risk option. He will play x NFL plays, they will be net positive. Hard to explain. but I feel ya

I also get that. Because he 'should' be able to play right away, and he does get to help out in other areas that are strengths, so maybe he pushes them to a punishing level.

I won't hate the pick, if it happens.

i like benny and sunshine well enough as special teamers and depth guys outside, but we don't have anything even slightly resembling a competent slot receiver on this team. . . unless you want to play sanders there a bunch, which i don't think either he or they want. . . that doesn't mean you have to spend a high pick there, of course-- but it's absolutely a real area of need, and so is return specialist. . .

in any case, i agree with hawg's characterization of him as a safe pick. . . he has the measurables, he has the production, and he has the intangibles-- plus he's extremely versatile, and those guys tend to find places. . . whether he hits a projected ceiling or not, he is fairly unlikely to bust. . . hence, a safe pick. . . risk of missing on another guy isn't part of the equation-- that occurs with any pick you could make, it's a factor that's the same across the board for any prospect. . .

either way, my gut says he's not going to end up in denver. . .

I watched Jordan Taylor enough to go 'he should be given an actual shot to be the third WR' and I don't think he got that shot. He's a second year player at a three year position. Fowler is eh.

Caff's versatility kind of makes him vulenerable in a sense, though. Okay, you draft him to be in the slot - go learn that offense and get all that down. Now learn the blocking packages. And take that abuse. Now go out there and learn how to do ST's in the NFL. You're going to put a lot on his plate and he kind of has to deliver to justify taking a RB who might not be the second best runner in the draft. He could also be the next Marshall Faulk. Just food for thought.
