I'm guessing he was told to have a go

I think they know our offense won't get it done and are looking for a spark elsewhere

He has taken a knee all year until now

First of all, he's probably being coached on what to do.

Second, the 25-yard-line rule change has been put to the text all season long, it's supposed to entice the teams to kneel but it's been having sort of the opposite result.

Where's Trindon Holliday when you need him?

Don't you dare blame the coaches for his shitty returns.

Don't you dare!

His returns were sorry

But I reckon they told him to go for it

I imagine the conversation went like this.

"We really see no point in having you on this team. Give kickoff return a try, and maybe you get to stay on the roster."

Gives a try.

The rest of the NFL practices how to AVOID kicks into the end zone, so opponents are FORCED to return it far short of the 25: We save them the trouble—at 5280'!

This is true, but I've seen a lot of KRs take the ball out of the endzone fail to make it to the 15.

Which is why it's a fools errand under the new rule, ESPECIALLY at Mile High. Which is more likely:

1) A kicker in Denver managing to get the ball INSIDE the 25 but WITHOUT it rolling into the end zone, or
2) Returning it from the end zone to significantly OUTSIDE the 25 (because getting it to the 27 really isn't worth the injury risk)?

I'm thinking the first one. If a kicker manages enough touch to put it well inside the 25 but well outside the 5, fine; then you have no choice, but also only need a 20+ yd return (instead of 30+) to come out ahead (if only marginally.) But if it crosses the 5 before hitting the ground—and CERTAINLY if it doesn't hit the ground before the end zone—the NFL has GIVEN you a free ˝ pt: DON'T GIVE IT TO YOUR OPPONENT!
