It’s a scary prospect for the rest of the NFL, and particularly the Carolina Panthers and quarterback Cam Newton on Thursday night in the season opener, but Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips believes Von Miller is better right now than he was last season.
Outside linebacker Miller’s role has changed this offseason. He is now the face of the franchise with his new six-year, $114.5 million contract signed in July. He has been more vocal as a leader on and off the field. Now, he’s eager to get back to what he does best — sack quarterbacks.
“He seems to be more comfortable at everything, more focused,” Phillips said. “He wanted to prove to everybody that maybe he’s the best player, maybe he’s the defensive player of the year. He was the MVP in the Super Bowl, but I think his next goal is to be the defensive player of the year.”
Miller expects to see a lot more extra attention from the Panthers, especially after he destroyed their right offensive tackle, Mike Remmers, one-on-one all night in the Super Bowl, notching 2 ½ sacks and two forced fumbles.
