ENGLEWOOD—One problem with having a preseason-long quarterback competition is the Denver Broncos may not want any of their three candidates to play in the meaningless fourth preseason game next week.

If Trevor Siemian is declared the Broncos’ starter, he won’t play next Thursday against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, Ariz.

If Paxton Lynch is the No. 2 quarterback nipping at Siemian’s heels do you want your franchise quarterback playing a full game behind second-, third- and fourth-string offensive linemen?

That leaves eight-year veteran Mark Sanchez. Wouldn’t it be cruel to ask Sanchez to play in such a meaningless game?

Another problem with the chronology of the NFL calendar for preseason game No. 4 is the Broncos have to cut 15 players by Tuesday to get their roster down from 90 to 75. But because the top 25 Broncos players won’t play after preseason game No. 3 this Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams (6 p.m. pregame show; 7 p.m. kickoff, Channel 20) that fourth preseason game two days later is when you really could use those 15 players who have been cut.

I personally but strongly doubt Lynch is our #2 this year. That makes him ideal choice to start our final preseason game. I just hope "blockers" who aren't even good enough to win a starting spot on OUR subpar injury-riddled line don't damage him too badly in a single game (then again, he'll be facing bubble defenders, too, right?)

Osweiler started the 4th preseason last season as the team's number 2 quarterback. So whether or not Lynch is the number 2 quarterback or not he will more than likely start the 4th game.
