That race is on TV right now, but I have the volume off because I've been on the official Olympic website trying to see if I can watch other sports that I'm more interested in. That, and the fact that I don't have satellite or cable TV & my reception of the local NBC channel is less then 100% clear. Nevertheless, they are keeping the camera on the racers, so maybe NBC is trying to pretend that there's nothing going on at the finish line.

My guess is NBC won't show any of it. I have the sound down too.

I'm not watching since many athletes ducked out due to Zika fears and the Russians were banned for doping reasons so what, exactly, does a gold medal say - that you were the best among the people who chose to attend and weren't banned? When the Olympics used to be Free World vs. Communism, there was real international tension at stake. Now that we're all various shades of socialism, the only thing to root for is individual achievements. Meh.

The Soviet Union & the rest of the Warsaw Pact, minus Romania, boycotted the ’84 games. I don’t know the exact number of elite athletes that are missing these games, but I bet not nearly as many as missed in ’84.

OrangeHoof

...and while the '84 games were enjoyable as a spectacle and a boost to the US Olympic program, most of the athletes know it was bogus since the Soviet bloc wasn't there. And was also true of the 1980 Olympics that the U.S. boycotted over Afghanistan (how ironic).

Substitute love of country for love or city or state, then you just described pro sports. Substitute with love of school, & you just described collage sports. From what I've been told, you might also be describing high school football in Texas.

As far as the original purpose of the Olympics when it was reborn in 1896, let’s just say we’d have to move to P & R to discuss that.

Love of city isn't quite the same thing, although there are some similarities. You can just like football and pick a team, but when you watch the Olympics I think it's mostly out of your country. I mean, there's not that many people who care about track and field, or swimming.

No...the fact that you have to point to historic moments to justify a bunch of countries that ultimately don't care about one another/hate one another/love one another in a faux sense of peace I think makes my point.

We can care about the Olympics when there's a strong sense of evil in the world, or when the USA dream team wants to beat the hell out of a bunch of European scrub teams? The sports suck. The peace and love crap is just that, crap. It's a money maker. If you dig it, dig it baby.

I'll admit that my over abundance of hatred for Brady fuels my feelings about his cheating vs. others. I'm kind of sick of the steroid high horses people get on. I mean, I understand why its illegal, but I'm sick of the baseball writers not putting players in the Hall of Fame because of even rumors about PEDs. It's a museum. Put them in the Hall, then put on their plaque they had links to PEDs, if they're substantiated. Don't play moral police.

That all said, I invest a lot more time into baseball and football than I ever will with Olympics or Olympic sports, so my level of disdain for cheaters is naturally going to be lower.

If you don't care for the Olympics, then great. Stay the F out of this thread.

I'm enjoying them, along with Comcast's coverage. They stream every event, which is pretty cool. I watched a bunch of the table tennis matches, because I love ping pong and am damn good at it (not olympic damn good, mind you...) and they have a channel for every table.

If the thread is about the Olympics, and you don't like them, you can talk about it.

I have pride in my country but I don't like the Olympics. It would actually make for a relatively interesting conversation that falls within the parameters of the thread; such a conversation wouldn't stop, mitigate, impede, or halt people make the more routine posts about the sporting event, either. Joe brought up how this should be exempt from basic rules because it's about national pride. That would make for a great discussion about why national pride should receive different rules.

This came up because people brought up their dislike about the Olympics. Now the fact that the exchange occurred is as strong of an argument for why people shouldn't categorically dismiss posts that are 'contrarian' in a wide open thread. The fact that the discussion died off further points out why such a dismissive attitude is lacking.

The irony that what derailed the thread was actually people "complaining," about those who were "complaining," about the Olympics -note that no one was actually complaining about the Olympics for further irony- also is pretty damned strong evidence, too.

Had the conversation actually occurred, we all probably would have come away with something more than what we entered the thread with; seeing how no one was actually shitting on the Olympics that fault falls on the complainers who were complaining about the people who weren't complaining in the first place.

I love all of you. Even Val.

I have. I wouldn't try to get in anyone's head before a sprint type event. Maybe a distance swim, hope you can psyche them into pushing too hard in the beginning so they wear out, but a 200 meter swim? No way in hell. Especially not Michael Phelps. The way that guy beat him 4 years ago is really the only way, hang right with him and surge near the finish. Get out in front and he'll catch you.

His 4x1 turn was amazing. That was an awesome race, and he made a point to say after the race to Michelle Tafoya, "We wanted that race back on American soil." And she started to ask something else and he just said, "I wanted that race back on American soil." He's on a mission. I should have watched last night, I didn't.

I rolled my eyes. The reason it is of particular interest to people in Chicago is because of the tie to Unrein - so I have no problems with the Chicago Tribune referencing that. The idea that she is being slighted is silly - because no one would care about a trap shooting bronze medalist in that context otherwise.

No one makes the connection unless they tell you. No one posts that on a Bears or Broncos message board unless the media identifies her as the wife of an NFL player. Do you click on a link that says three-time Olympian trap shooter wins gold? Heck no you don't, because Olympic trap shooter just isn't that popular.

Ok, but this ignores the fact that the reason a regional newspaper picks this up is because of the tie back to the region. Without that - it isn't newsworthy.

If it were a national piece in say the USA Today then I'm more inclined to agree with you (although, in that case I'd still argue a trap shooting bronze medalist is not as compelling as the spouse of a professional athlete winning a bronze medal).
