View Full Version : NFL likely to insert data chips into game balls in preseason, Thursdays

Denver Native (Carol)

The NFL is finalizing plans to insert custom-made data chips into the game balls used in the 2016 preseason and Thursday night regular-season games, a league source said Sunday night.

The data would be used for research that could spark significant changes in officiating, kicking and other areas as soon as the 2017 season.

The Toronto Sun reported earlier Sunday that the league would use chips in K-balls to help determine the potential impact of narrowing the goalposts sometime in the future.

The data will tell the league how close each kick comes to the uprights and thus help project how many additional kicks would be missed if the uprights were closer together.

it's about damn time. . . now they just need to get smart and put the technology towards something that's actually useful-- namely, putting sensors in the goal line so we can get rid of replay to determine whether the ball crossed the plane. . .

What about chips to determine air pressure? I can literally feel Brady's depression setting in.

Gah! I know! Fans have been screaming about this for year. RFID technology has been around for years that is capable of making field goals, touchdowns, etc. easy to determine. They also need to do this in baseball for strikezones.

A sensor at the goal line sounds good but I'm not sure that's going to tell if the ball crossed the goal line before a player was down.

Patience, Buff. I'm sure the NFL has considered the possibility of using a chip to determine if the ball crossed the plane. I see this FG measure as them simply testing the technology and working out the kinks.

Also, this would be a brilliant thing for balls kicked over the top of the goalpost. This would eliminate that judgement call.

They do it right now anyway for the little strike displays. I don't think it should replace umpires, just augment it. Like they should get a score on how accurate they are and the best ones get to do the playoffs and world series or something. Or not, I don't care. I do think it has good ramifications for Football, though.

No. The strike zone isn't the same for everyone. That's the beauty of it. It's defined by the batter, not a set space hovering above the plate. I believe it's currently defined as from the bottom of the knee cap to the bottom of the numbers. For Jose Altuve, who's only 5-6, if the strike zone were designed for a 6-0 person, the strike zone for him would go to his chin and for Jason Heyward, who I believe is 6-5, it would only go to his belt. That's not a fair strike zone.

Yes, I understand how the strike zone works.

But why should a pitcher get 2 inches off the outside corner one day, 6 inches off the corner his next outing, and zero the next?

I don't really have a defense for it, other than I like the human element. Most umpires will define where their strike zone is by the end of the first or second inning and the players should adjust accordingly. There's an art to it to me, and I like the unscientific nature of it.

Some things are so deeply unpleasant it's obvious without need of direct experience. The one thing baseball needs more than ANYTHING else is a pitch clock: Leaving the box is a strike, and any pitch not thrown within 30 seconds of a batter entering the box is a ball. I'd watch the Hell out of that.
