View Full Version : Muhammad Ali and the fight game

Let's discuss the fight game and the way it's changed over the years. The passing of Ali caused me to reflect on his influence on the fight game.

Please don't bring politics into this.

I would encourage anyone who has an interest in boxing or mma to watch tonight's ufc fight when considering this topic, and specifically Dominic Cruz.

Cruz is a great example of how the fight game has changed. 20 years ago mma was dominated by grapplers and guys who excelled at ground and pound and submissions. Cruz is an example of how that has changed. Today's mma fight game is dominated by great strikers and those who aren't good on their feet don't go very far.

Now back to Cruz; Cruz is a former collegiate wrestler who excels at the stand up game. He is one of the more entertaining strikers you will see and I encourage you to watch him. He's a very unorthodox fighter. When asked where he learned his footwork (which is yet unmatched in his weight class ) he said he has watched hours of Muhammed Ali tape.

I find it fascinating how Ali's fighting style has affected the fight game, especially outside of boxing.

I believe the fake fights killed boxing, the whole Foreman comeback fight string was extremely saddening. I used to love watching the fights, I still do but it just doesn't have the same magic anymore.

I lost a lot of interest in boxing as well. The only guy worth watching these days is Golovkin, IMO.
However, I really enjoy mma.

I love watching old fight films. When I was on a three week deep-sea fishing trip I binged a couple 6-volume box sets of MMA fights. I boxed in college. I don't really keep up with any current fighters.

I think the fights that have stayed with me the most are the Liston v. Clay and Mancini v. Kim fights.

My favorite boxer was Roy Jones Jr. The way he predicted finishing Pazienza was classic. I still think he's the best pound for pound fighter ever.

Just watched the Pazienza fight. Jones' footwork/hipwork is something else..super disciplined. Besides his speed, he's so compact with his hips when he strikes with force, gotta be tough to defend. I mean, he generates power without excessive hip twist, and when he does strike hard, it's crazy fast and constrained in the hips. It's like watching a jaguar tightly coiled. Watching the Toney fight now.

I'm watching the UFC fights on fox sports right now. The next kid up is pretty fun to watch (Thomas Almeida). He likes to throw a lot of switch kicks and spinning back fasts. Fighters who take risks like that are fun to watch, if they know how to time it.

No worries bro, the only reason I put that in the OP is there were some pretty heated debates about Ali and his political stances on the message board the day I started the thread and I didn't want it to get derailed.

Cody Garbrandt is the contender for Cruz's belt. It will be well worth watching for anyone interested in the fight game.

Not protecting yourself in a fight to showboat. That's what I am referencing. Why is is it, or unintelligent? Because it lowers your chances to win, i.e. the point of the fight.

And yes, I get it that I'm saying in in a thread about Ali, and I love Ali. And I don't have an issue with it from a 'moral' or principle standpoint.

He is, yes. He started out in boxing and switched to mma a few years ago. He's a freak athlete and just flat out puts people to sleep when he connects. Orlavski is a legitimate top contender at heavyweight and Ngonnu put him to sleep in like his 4th UFC fight.

He's called the Predator, and he fits the part. I can only think of 3 guys who have a chance against him. Miocic, Velasquez, and Dos Santos. Nobody else has the hand speed or chin to get out of the first round with him.

He should fight wilder next, see who else is they're worth fighting, knock out a few bums then retire.

There's that stud heavyweight from New Zealand. He reminds me of Evander Holyfield but I just don't see him being able to deal with the size of either Wilder or Joshua. I hope that Wilder and Joshua have one of those amazing three fights Series where one guy wins one andthe other guy wins two and they go around as as one of the greatest rivalries in the history of boxing. It's pretty cool that there's actually been a decent Resurgence in the heavyweight because it's been a long time since we've seen legitimately good Heavies. I think Josh is going to destroy Tyson Fury.

I honestly think Joshua could have a 25-0 career and a knock out percentage of 100%

He should fight wilder next, see who else is they're worth fighting, knock out a few bums then retire.
and the funny thing about how about fight will go is that Tyson Fury talked a lot about jab and grab from Klitschko. I think the only way Fury last into the middle rounds in a Joshua fight is if he employs that exact tactic

Tyson fury is a joke.

Joshua will take him out in two rounds, do would wilder, do would klitchko if they ever fought again.

I hate fury!!

There were some really good fights last night on Fox. Every one a knock out, but tons of action in all three bouts.
