We aren't terrible and will almost certainly qualify for the World Cup, but we are at best second-tier team.

I'm glad you're watching though. Soccer is awesome. And one good thing about the Central American/African immigrants coming in to the USA is hopefully (https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/jun/01/us-soccer-diversity-problem-world-football) we will have a bunch of really kickass soccer players in a few years.

One cannot quickly loiter unless one is just standing around for a few moments and is accused of loitering. One call moderately murderdance if they just dance the murder on one person and not multiple people. I thought you understood Kingisms better, Al. I can only shake my head in sadness.

Why is Argentina so good? Is is just raw star power? Is it star power that is cohesive and has synergy? Is it a bonkers all-star roster with depth? Elite defense?

Messi for one, considered probably the best player in the sport right now. But after watching them the other day they have a lot of great chemistry with passing and defense. I often find when watching this sport that the more accurate you are passing the ball and being organized the better the chances of success you have at overcoming other areas that a team is weak in. Some teams are just so sloppy and careless that it sets them up for failure every single time. Argentina just looks like a polished machine out there compared to a lot of the other teams.

The USA has not devoted the resources necessary at the lower levels of player development. That's what Klinsmann has talked about many times (to the criticism of many Americans). The USA is weak sauce. If we want to be a good soccer nation, we need youth player development. The best nations with the best soccer players don't go to college and play soccer until they are 22/23 like they do here. By that age, most good players are already playing in the big leagues. Our soccer culture is weird and behind the curve and until we change it from bottom up, we better get used to being no better than average.

The other stuff was more important and the reason I posted it.

I mean, I guess he has a point that soccer is played by the poorest of people all around the world because all you need is a ball. That's why it's so loved in Africa and in South/Central America. That is indisputable IMO. And we have a lot of immigrants from those places now who love soccer, so you'd think years down the line they will grow up and be good enough to play on the national team. But I don't think we suck at soccer because we have a bunch of spoiled rich brats playing for us. We suck at soccer because the infrastructure isn't there. It'll be helpful to get these kids who are more "natural" when it comes to playing soccer since they probably grew up playing it back home, but that in itself is not the key to making USA soccer top tier.

I agree that the rest of it is good. I think it's only going to get better though. Soccer is becoming more popular here. More schools at the lower levels are getting soccer programs. It's going to take time but I think we will get there. We will never dominate like in basketball or football, but it will be competitive and fun to watch.

They might. I just don't think it's that easy. It's such a different sport. What makes a player like Messi great is his touch. It's not really his athleticism.

Think of it like golf. Stregnth and power can only get you so far. If you don't have touch and control of the ball, you aren't going to win.

I just don't agree. So much of it is training. Ronaldo is 6-1, 175. He's 175 because soccer requires you to run a 5K. If he grew up swinging a bat or pitching, or bulked up in a weight program designed at strength instead of cardio and be 6-1, 205, he couldn't be a running back?

We're talking about specific training from the age of about 10, not, hey, now you play for the Browns. Good luck.

I do not see the correlation. I am a pretty solid athlete. I was good at soccer when I was a kid (mainly because I was fast), but I was never that good. I picked up a hockey stick and ice skates and having never skated on ice before, scored 2 goals my first game. I tried out for my HS hockey team and made varsity- my first year- my second year I made the college team. I was 5'11 and 185 at that time. NO elite measurables. Hockey worked for me, easily, quickly. Soccer, not so much. Some things click for some people. Hockey clicked for me. I would say that I am probably above average in nearly every sport, but I dont think even if I spent my life on soccer I would have been as good.

An all around athlete can still have a higher ceiling in some sports vs others. I think Julius Thomas would make a terrible soccer player, but he is a great TE- we saw how he was ok at BBall and was complete pimp at Football in a span of 3 years.

Why can’t U.S. Soccer join the world’s elite? It’s not Jurgen Klinsmann; it’s MLS.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/soccer-insider/wp/2016/06/24/why-cant-u-s-soccer-join-the-worlds-elite-its-not-jurgen-klinsmann-its-mls/

The U.S. defense, anchored by two players from the Bundesliga (John Brooks and Fabian Johnson) and two from the Premier League (DeAndre Yedlin and Geoff Cameron), has been a strength during Copa America. But the entire midfield and forward line in Houston was made up of players from Major League Soccer, which, though improved in stature and quality, still falls a long way short of the top leagues in the world when it comes to relentless pressure on players to improve. It showed on Tuesday: Argentina was sharper, quicker and smarter than its opponent.

But when Orlando City’s Brek Shea returned to MLS last year after an unsuccessful spell in England, he revealed an attitude that was far from that of those that had gone before him.

“One of the reasons I didn’t enjoy England so much is that it’s so small and soccer is the biggest thing there. So everything you do is magnified times a thousand,” he said. Shea added in another interview while playing in England that he missed the weekly team barbecues he enjoyed while with FC Dallas and lamented that playing the game in England was “just different; it’s a job.”

It is indeed a job, and the scrutiny of fans and media members in European football is certainly on a different level — two of the reasons that Klinsmann has been so enthusiastic to encourage his players to test themselves abroad. If the United States is to get to the next level, it won’t be a coach’s tactics that take them there. It will be because its players have been hardened to the point where they would be offended at being called nice.

Don't rush it.

America is a desirable market for top players, currently towards the end of their career.

Be patient, once top players start wanting to play in the states, the standard of MLS will improve, ergo the American players will stay in that league will also improve.

Hoping to farm out all your players to Europe will only keep the lack of good youth talent from coming through and make the decision to play baseball instead much easier

Be patient.

Im really kind of surprised America got as far as they did in this tourney. Their passing is atrocious.

I like soccer because style seems to actually matter. Long passes = style. short passes with a staccato pace = style. Kicks with a lot of bend and torque on them = style.

It doesnt help that they allowed Colombia to get under their skin tonight. Not the first time ive seen them lose their cool in the few games i have seen them play in this. USA has a long way to go to get to Chile and Argentina levels.
