It’s not unusual for Peyton Manning to make game-changing calls on a football field.
“Omaha!” “Hurry! Hurry!”
But earlier this month, the retired, Super Bowl 50 champion Denver Broncos quarterback, made a call more important than any other — especially to a Pueblo family whose youngest member was stricken with a life-threatening illness.
Walking in Denver’s Children’s Hospital Colorado in a wing adorned with Broncos paraphernalia and pictures of players including a giant, orange No. 18 jersey, Ryan and Amanda Blanchfield thought, for a second, that they were the victims of a possible prank call.
Their 5-month-old son Cash was recovering from a heart transplant. The young couple was going through something they never thought they would.
Cash, named after the late country superstar Johnny Cash, was born with a rare heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy — which leads to his heart muscle becoming abnormally thick. The baby boy had to have a six-hour heart transplant surgery on May 1.
During a walk with their son in recovery, the phone rang.
