I don't know his name because I don't know the name of anyone who the broncos drafted this year, but anyhoo, he is from Syracuse, and they got him in the 7th round I think.

It is his job to lose, right? because no way anyone is paying 4 million for a punter, (especially one who punts like poop in altitude (although he did have a good super bowl if I remember correctly)

I think it will be a completely open competition, I don't believe it's anyone's "job to lose". It's their job to win, if they don't then they can go kick somewhere else.

Of course the Broncos are not going to leave themselves with a punter that gives them poor field position. In that respect, I believe they will allow an honest competition. However, if the result is a toss up, they will decide on the side of cap room and use the money toward Von's long-term contract.

I think his job would be to punt. Why would losing at punter be his job?

Damn straight. The lack of respect I get around here. He totally ignored my awesome thread. I'm gonna have a bf.

I realize Colquitt's got a chunky cap hit, but it's hard to imagine Elway prefers a 7th round rookie over a guy who's spent his career in Denver and KILLED it in the postseason. Colquitts gross average was >45 yds in the SB and he actually had a HIGHER NET against TED GINN. I'd rather bring his cap hit down to $2M with an extension that lets him retire a Bronco than roll the dice on a 7th round rookie. The phrase "bargain basement Super Bowl Champs" doesn't come up much.

What if they both suck?

Not applicable: Colquitt doesn't suck.

I wpuld say the job is still Colquitts but if its close he will have to take a pay cut or be cut

Colquitt stepped up in the postseason. He's had been grossly overpaid the last 3 years, but the postseason he had was worth every penny. He was money punt after punt. I think it will be an open competition. Elway is not one to throw away draft picks. The fact that he spent a 7th rounder on this kid means he'll get a legit shot.

He already took pay cut last season. It might be his job to lose but, the fact that Elway drafted another punter means he's on very shaky ground.

Bringing in punters last season showed the same but colquitt was clutch in playoffs

We should have drafted a long snapper.

It must be the offseason.

Brent Rossweiler said the Texans had a good draft. Big, if true.

Yes, but Elway didn't draft one last year. I know he punted well but this the second year in a row that competition has been brought in.

This is why I'd like to try and extend him: We could reduce this years cap hit, give him as much or more total cash, ensure he retires a Bronco, not have to hope a 7th round punter's legit, and not be right BACK here next year when Colquitts contract ends ANYWAY. If you're Colquitt (or his agent) which would you prefer:

1) $4M now, then sending out resumes at 32, or
2) $5M now, plus $½M in salary, then an additional $½ each of the next 4 years?

That would HALVE his 2016 cap hit and it would NEVER get that high again—yet he'd get $1½M more this year, be almost assured $1M, $1½M and then $2M more, AND have job security until the next decade. At this point Colquitt's established he's legit, so unless he had a dead leg before 35 we'd be set, for less each year than he's costing us now. That's a clear win for everyone (again, even Colquitts agent.) Except the 7th round rookie punter, but he knows as well as anyone he's a long shot.

Yeah, but I can't believe we waited to long to address that issue. And how good can the guy be? No one else wanted him.

You don't spend a draft pick gonna punter unless you plan on replacing the one you already have. Open competition? Maybe. If it's close, Colquitt is gone.

Unless this guy falls apart I think Colquitt is a gonner.

7th round. You use those on guys you want to try out and dont want to take a risk of them signing with another team as udfa
