View Full Version : Bill would forever preserve "Mile High" in Broncos' stadium name

Denver Native (Carol)

A bipartisan bill introduced into the Colorado legislature Tuesday afternoon would ensure the name "Mile High" lives on forever, regardless of other naming deals for the Denver Broncos' stadium.

The legislation was filed coincidentally just as Sports Authority, which currently holds naming rights to the stadium, announced it has no hope of surviving the $1.1 billion debt that forced the company into bankruptcy. New corporate interests could soon line up for naming rights to the Super Bowl champions home field.

"Broncos fans throughout Denver and Colorado have been uniformly supportive of the Denver Broncos," said Rep. Dan Pabon, a Democrat from Denver who is sponsoring the bill. "They've supported the building of their stadium. They've been supportive of the team. They've celebrated victory and we have a taxpayer-funded parade to support them."

Sports Authority may now be heading into liquidation but its right to name the Denver Broncos' stadium is not yet up for grabs.

But not so fast, all ye with a clever new name suggestion.

Even if the bankruptcy court finds a buyer, the ultimate decision to rename Sports Authority Field at Mile High will be up to the Denver Broncos and the Metropolitan Football Stadium District.

AND

As Invesco shed jobs in Denver and ultimately left town in 2009, the company still paid to keep its name on the stadium.

Sports Authority, too, has kept up with payments since filing for bankruptcy in March. The next payment to the district for $3.6 million is due Aug. 1.

"While our relationship with Sports Authority has not changed at this time, we are monitoring this process as it pertains to our partnership and stadium naming rights agreement," Patrick Smyth, the Broncos vice president of public relations, wrote in an e-mail.

It may all come down to the Aug. 1 payment. If Sports Authority misses the deadline, a 30-day grace period kicks in and then the district can terminate the contract.

Lol wut? This comment makes no sense. God forbid the government take a few minutes out of their day to pass a bill involving a bit of good PR for a popular organization in the community. Surely that means they will start passing radical changes like going to the metric system.

Way back when Colorado was feeling the heat over passing an amendment that opponents labeled anti-gay, our local loons passed an ordinance calling for a boycott of all businesses existing inside the State of Colorado. They were so proud of themselves for passing the ordinance that they adjourned to attend a retreat in Aspen.

One can only hope; I could stop converting gallons of water into liters and then BACK into pounds just to figure out how much they weigh, or doing the same kind of mental arithmetic to figure out how much energy it takes to boil. Because 1=1=1 is "too complicated and confusing" for the rest of America, even though the rest of the planet figured it out pretty quickly. There's something perversely impressive about people who consider ignorance a source of PRIDE.

Anyway, new name: Stadiummy McStadiumface. Metric foes would love it (and not just for containing the word "dummy," which few of them would even notice.)

You realize jets full of passengers have run out of fuel in midair, and a billion dollar spacecraft burned up in the Martian atmosphere, all because the US insists on being the ONLY country still living in the 1600s, right? I mean, metrification's neither here nor there to the CO legislature setting Mile Highs name in stone, but since he not only brought it up but made it sounds like a dictatorial policy that can only end in gas chambers, it's only fair to address such idiocy for what it is.

Gotta keep using a British system so overcomplicated even THEY abandoned years ago, "Because 'Murica." Should we patriotically put Queen Elizabeth back in charge, too? I had a whole rant typed out, but will just ask a few simple questions of anyone who thinks BRITAINS system more "American" or "better:"

Which is bigger, a dram or gill? And WHAT do they measure?
Which is bigger, a fathom or ell, and what do THEY measure?
How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon; how many of each are in a cup?

If you can answer all those questions without googling, maybe British Imperial units or their US Customary spinoffs genuinely are easier for you. Multiplying by the SAME NUMBER EVERY TIME is easier for me, especially when that number's 10, but I won't argue with what works for you. HOWEVER, if you DID have to look up any of that but think that's easier than multiplying by 10, you're not as smart as I thought most of you were (my bad, I guess.)

Sports Authority Field at Mile High was made possible thanks to the generosity of the citizens of
Boulder, Denver, Jefferson, Adams, Broomfield, Douglas and Arapahoe Counties.

Sports Authority Field at Mile High is managed by Stadium Management Company, LLC.
The stadium is owned by the Metropolitan Football Stadium District (MFSD)

The taxpayers paid for 75% of the cost, and Pat Bowlen paid for the other 25% of the cost

Ya'll be sure and let us know whether the city of Austin should run background checks on Uber drivers or just take Ubers word for it; we only have two more weeks of non-stop TV ads to help us decide, and our business is as much yours as the reverse. ;)

All I know is there are about 300 passengers really REALLY glad their co-pilot had extensive experience with large gliders and happened to have done his military training at an airbase nearby when they ran out of gas halfway to their destination (it had been converted to a track where a race was being held at the time; bet that jumbo jet coming in under no power was a real sight for the fans, not to mention the drivers.)

It's a stupid horse and buggy system; despite using it for 70 years, even my mother isn't sure how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon or tablespoons in a cup unless she looks it up somewhere. 1=1=1; that's so simple it's not even really math.

Right: The metric system's for stupid people like doctors and engineers, who NEVER use ANYTHING else. But I'll bite; what's your simple math for converting cubic inches into quarts—again, WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP (no one needs google to know 1000 cm3=1000 ml=1 L*). Also once again, how many drams are in a gill, or ells in a league? If it's so easy, you can surely tell us off the top of your head. ;)

I learned it in kindergarten and all the way through grade 12...then never used it again in my life.

Know many electricians who measure power in BTUs/sec or foot-pounds/sec? I know more who use watts, because Imperial doesn't even HAVE electrical (nor radiological) units. It technically CAN'T have any for voltage, as such: The volt is a metric unit, but we refer to "voltage" because 1) "electrical potential difference" is a mouthful and 2) VOLTS ARE THE ONLY UNIT FOR IT. Know many doctors or nurses who give medicine by the cubic inch or quart instead of the cc or liter?

Whenever we get a snowstorm or rainstorm I'm converting metric to imperial in my head on the fly to determine how much...;-)
Not sure if you're in Canada or what, because you're gonna have that same problem pretty much ANYWHERE outside the US.

*I actually got a decent estimate of that with mental math: Convert 1 in3 to ~15˝ cc, then divide a quarts ~1000 ml by that to get ~62˝ in3/qt., close to the actual value I just looked up online (i.e. 1 qt.=57.7502 in3—that's SO much easier to remember than 1L=1000 cm3. Theoretically, since 1 W=1 A X 1 V AND 1 kg X 1 m˛ X 1 sec-3, we could even convert pounds and feet to kilograms and meters, then back again, to invent Imperial electric unit: But isn't it a HELL of a lot easier to just keep using watts, amps, volts and ohms—even if they don't let us shout, "SUCK IT WORLD!"?)

Joel
04-29-2016, 02:06 PM
This is why no one fully understands Deflategate: Because proving NE* full of crap requires using the metric system, something virtually no one who cares about American football is willing or able to do. I'll take that to mean "I don't know how, so you're dumb." Speaking of ignorance, my wife didn't kick me out; folks in a hole should stop digging. Meanwhile, I'll make it simple: In non-metric units, explain why Bradys explanation of Deflategate's false. Oh, wait, the Ideal Gas Law uses kelvins, not degrees Rankine; never mind.

As for the CYP, someone recently reminded me using MHSes for snarky comments violates the CoC: "Do you realize what a complete and total moron you are? Just leave. For the record, if you get a CYP it'll be your own doing, because I doubt I've reported even half a dozen posts in nearly a decade since joining (nor received as many CYPs.) If your replies to me draw a lot of CYPs ANYWAY, what does that tell you...? ;)

Because, to be brutally honest, the more you state your opinion of me, the less I value it, and we're heading into negative numbers now.

Democrats' feel-good bill would have made traditional moniker a matter of law, not choice

A Colorado Senate committee didn't feel good about a piece of feel-good legislation offered by House Democrats, killing a bill Thursday that would have made the "Mile High" stadium name a matter of law, not choice.

The bill failed on a 3-2 party-line vote.

"The taxpayers deserve to have their Mile High history and tradition preserved," said Rep. Dan Pabon, a Denver Democrat and passionate Broncos fan who championed the bill. "Broncos fans all over the state will remember this day, but nothing can kill our fans 'mile high' spirit."

The legislation would have allowed anyone who buys the naming rights to the Denver Broncos' home stadium to use their company name and logo, but retain "Mile High" in the stadium's name, such as the current name, Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Any company could — and probably would — still choose to keep the name to satisfy fans of tradition.

A response from Senate Republicans wasn't immediately available Thursday afternoon.

Former Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley was at the Capitol to testify in favor a bill regulating fantasy sports leagues this week, but he also was quick to endorse the Mile High name.

"I love it," he said in an interview. "I think that's a landmark here in Denver. It's always been Mile High Stadium, and I definitely think that's the way it should always be."

At the risk of re-opening that can of worms, the fuel sensor fault was so common the airline routinely dealt with it by simply shutting it off, but they'd NEVER had a plane run out of fuel before then: Because the metric-to-Imperial conversions had always been right. Likewise, the three ground crews couldn't have gotten the metric-to-Imperial conversions wrong any number of times if they hadn't needed to DO metric-to-Imperial conversions in the first place.

Yes, refusal to use the metric system was the ONLY reason the plane ran out of fuel. Just like it's the only reason millions of your tax dollars burned up in the Martian atmosphere before we got a dimes worth of use out of them.
