View Full Version : John Clayton thinks 49ers, Colin Kaepernick are losers in Titans-Rams trade

The Los Angeles Rams made a bold move on Thursday, trading a haul of picks to climb from No. 15 to No. 1 in the 2016 NFL Draft. They are expected to draft a quarterback with that pick, and it could mean both Jared Goff and Carson Wentz are gone in the first two picks.

The San Francisco 49ers are impacted given that they are picking No. 7, but how they are impacted is up for debate. ESPN's John Clayton looked at winners and losers from the trade, and he decided the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick are among the losers.

If Wentz and Goff go in the first two picks, the option of drafting a quarterback ends, unless they reach to take Lynch at No. 7. That's unlikely. Whether it's uncomfortable or not, Kaepernick looks like he's staying in San Francisco now that the second QB in the draft likely won't fall to the seventh pick. If he really wants out, the 49ers now aren't in a position to accommodate a trade, unless they can somehow get a second-round choice. They need to keep Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, which should please new coach Chip Kelly.

He also pointed to the Denver Broncos as a winner of the trade:

Although this trade pretty well ends the Colin Kaepernick trade option, it could allow Paxton Lynch to become more of an option for Denver. Had the Rams stayed at the No. 15 pick, they might have taken Lynch there. It's possible he could drop to No. 31 or be close enough to acquire in a trade. The trade also could put Nick Foles on John Elway's radar if the Rams end up cutting him.

This would presume that nobody between #3 and #30 would take Paxton Lynch, and no team that didn't get a QB in the first round would trade up out of the 2nd round to get ahead of the Broncos if Lynch were on the board at #29 or #30 or something - knowing that the Broncos were set to take Lynch with #31. In short, it's highly unlikely.

About the only way the Broncos come out ahead from this trade would be if Lynch were available and the Broncos traded up in the first to get him - say to #22 or #23 or something. That would probably mean giving up their 2nd round pick however - not something Elway would want to do.

If Lynch makes it past BUF, he could be ours. The NYJ and ARZ would be the remaining impediments to keep Lynch from DEN. Other than that no other teams need a QB. Hell, if Spence is available, he might be too good a value for ARZ to pass up and DEN wouldn't have to move up at all. A lot of speculation and assumptions, but Clayton seems to be onto something. Denver makes the move up only if they feel someone selecting early in the 2nd round is trying to move back into the 1st round.

If Cugel says something, the opposite is most likely true.

If BroncoJoe says something, it's guaranteed stupid. Checkmate. :coffee:

Which is exactly what some team would do if Lynch were sitting there somewhere in the 20's and they don't have a QB, but do have a pick somewhere near the top of the 2nd round. They get one of the top 3 QB prospects and only give up maybe a 2nd and 3rd round pick for him. The Broncos could do that of course, but their 2nd round pick is #64 and is only worth 270 points - and they'd be giving up their #1 and #2 pick.

That's a lot.

If wentz and goff go 1 and 2. 49ers will prob not draft lynch and grab one of the top players left and hold onto kaep for this season and get a QB in round 2 or 3. Lynch in top 10 is a gamble for a guy projected to need a yr or 2 to develope.
