Ware and #Broncos finish re-structure, he got 2M to sign ... He and team see his role as third-down rusher. Important player in locker room.

VERY glad to hear this. I didn't want to see Ware go anywhere. I think this makes Von negotiations a little easier as well.

DeMarcus Ware's restructured contract includes $2M upfront and the ability to make back his entire $10M salary in incentives.

---------

He was due $7 million base salary with a $3 million roster bonus. Should save some cap space, though it's hard to tell how much from this and how easily earned the incentives are. Now for Clady ...

Very good point on that last one. I remember much being made of the "Batman and Robin" thing with Von and Doom, but suspect Von would be the first to agree (though maybe not publicly) Ware was an upgrade as both a player and LEADER.

Curious how the incentives affect the final cap hit, but I guess we'll find out eventually....

ICYMI. He receives bonus. Cap hit goes down. Good for both sides. And lockerroom where he's influential leader

Ware identified as #Broncos priority bc of his contribution on and off field. Was due $3 M roster bonus on Sunday. Again he is returning

Under Ware's restructure it reflects his evolving role and importance to team. He will have a chance to recoup $$ lost

So a difference of 1.5 million?

I think 3.5 is the current savings. The language is confusing but it makes sense based on what his cap number was/is

Next question: If Ware's
role [is a] third-down rusher who starts? Will last years 1st rounder start, with Barrett backing him and Von, will it be the other way around, or do we choose a third option?

I think it's pretty safe to say Shane Ray will start. You don't spend a first round pick on someone (that we traded up for nonetheless) for him to ride the bench.

Fair enough; that's my bet too (I also believe—perhaps mistakenly—Ray subbed for Ware last year and Barrett for Von.) But since that's not set in stone I felt "safer" asking than STATING it. ;)

Ware was abolutely HUGE in the playoffs and SUper Bowl. He was absolutely just as much a fierce force against the passers as Von was. Need to keep him as healhy as possible. Loved his play in the post season...he truly showed why he has such a big name in the NFL for being an elite pass rusher.

we need him back, and it's nice to free up the cap space-- too bad we already lost all our most important free agents, but oh well, i guess. . . i'm really wondering how hard von is gonna stick it to us. . .

Shaq Barrett already played 100 more snaps this year than Ware. I imagine the rotation isn't a whole lot different. Ware probably takes even less and Ray plays more.

Ray will prob get more snaps than barrett. He got better as year went on. He is more of the all around LB like von. Saw him in coverage and got much better against the run.

That had a lot to do with Ware's health. When he was healthy, he played more snaps in those games than Barrett, I believe. The way they're putting this out there, Ware will hopefully be kept fresh and healthy, and therefore get less snaps in more games, rather than more snaps in fewer games. Ultimately, it will probably balance out the way you mentioned.

I realized that after I posted.

Last four regular season games:
Ware: 15, 31, 42, 27
Barrett: 26, 31, 22, 33
Ray: 20, 38, 28, 31

I imagine the Oakland, Pittsburgh and San Diego games above is what it might look like.

If you want to see the impact that warehouse on this defense. Just look at the lack of turnovers and sacks in the games that he missed this year

Exactly....he was also the best defensive player in football the first month of the season before he hurt his back.

I like the idea of making him a situational player

I'm not as disappointed in this offseason as most but just wish we could get a solid QB. If we can figure that out then I think we will still be a playoff team. It's hard to find though so I get it.

Happy Elway didn't allow us to get in cap hell too.

Did, and did; that's the biggest reason I was so glad and eager to see him return: Not because of what he alone brought in terms of sacks, but because the D that came roaring out of the gate Opening Day ground to a halt the moment he got hurt, but roared back to life once he was healthy. Wade's our general, but Ware's our field general, and their long history together makes that whole far greater than the sum of its very great parts.

As best as I can tell from reading all the reports, Ware is still not under contract for next season when he will be 35. So, this should be his last year. He's been suffering from bulging disk problems in his back. We'll have to see how well he holds up this season. They want to reduce him to a 3rd down specialist.

This is the worst loss the Broncos could have suffered, if he had retired or left. Ware is a Hall of Fame Player who was named to 9 pro-bowls in 11 seasons. Shane Ray is a nice player, but like replacing Elway or Shannon Sharpe or Peyton, you cannot really replace a Hall of Famer. Whoever takes his place will simply not be as good as he was.

His intellect and unsurpassed defensive knowledge has made him the unquestioned leader on that defense. I would go so far as to say that without him the defense simply would not be the same quality.

It sounds like they're going try to more snaps for Barrett and Ray in effort to Ware fresh and healthy. As a platoon Ray and Barrett actual did as well as Ware.

Yup. That's how it looks. Ware is a huge defensive leader in the locker room, regardless of how many snaps he takes. I remember hearing other DL talk about him breaking down film. He'd say "see this tendency? When the OG does this it means they are going to run here." And the other guys look at each other and say "did you see that?" And the other guy says "no, did you?" Ware is like the Peyton Manning of the defense. Always studying. Always prepared.

And that is a big reason why he cannot be replaced.

After visiting with OT Russell Okung today, Steelers scheduled to meet this week w/ Denver's Ryan Harris and SD's Chris Hairston, per source

It has been reported many times that the Broncos wanted to also restructure Harris's contract, and Harris said himself he wanted to stay with the Broncos. It appears that either Ryan has second thoughts now, or his agent does for him to be meeting with the Steelers.

All broncos FA's agents are after big pay days. We shall see. Harris can go for all I care. OL was bad. Elway is already renovating the offense.

Yet again I wonder whom agent's really represent. We drafted Harris as a starting RT just before Kubiak left for Houston, where they reunited soon after Harris and Dennison left Denver, so it was no surprise Harris followed both his coaches BACK to Denver. He knows the system and coaches, who also know him very well. He's no star, but has solid starting experience on BOTH sides, which nice insurance (especially if we release Clady.)

If Pitt offers him a contract worth $5M more his agents commission will still be about $˝M more.
