View Full Version : Who Gets Maliks Contract?

So the feedback in the media is that the Broncos are offering Malik 5 years $50 mil. He supposedly wants 5 at $75.

Obviously theres an impasse. Im pretty sure Malik will get what hes looking for and thats the highest bidder, and I dont think that

will be John Elway and the Champs.

Not even considering Trevathan and Oz, both of whom the Broncos planned for at a rate as well, without Malik signing, we have a

ton of cap space to spend should we choose to.......

:coffee::coffee::coffee:

We have an extra 3rd rounder and 4th rounder coming by way of compensatory picks, and its my understanding that for the first

time, we can trade those picks. Halelujah!

So, this opens a ton of options because IF we dont find a DT/DE that we desire at the right price, there are other potential free

agents out there that would love to have some of Ben Stei............sorry..........Malik Jacksons money.

How do you spend??

Osemele? Mario? Forte? Mack? Mack AND Osemele?

My value pick: Jaye Howard. The man wants to play for a winner.

Thoughts???

LETS GO BRONCOS!!

If I remember right, could be wrong, the new trading comps picks doesn't go into effect until next year.

Yup. Youre right. But a thought on that is we are picking at the bottom of each round anyway, so trading the picks we already have becomes

an easier decision I would think. At least meaning we will have more flex.

As well, Maliks contract will definitely bring a comp pick in 2017, as will any other top dog we lose.

If I was Elway I'd look to add a young veteran with upside and potential not yet realized such as Akiem Hicks or Kendall Reyes, they are both 26 and waiting to breakout, not to mention could be added for much less.

I'll believe that "ton of cap space" when I see it. Even 2nd round tenders on Marshall and CJ will eat >$5M between them, and we can't know the final price tag on Von and Oz, only that it's likely to be >$35M/yr (and even if we backload to lower this years hit, that's just a big reason to leave lots of cap space we can roll into 2017.) But (speaking of 2017) if we DO have lots of space, I hope we use it to extend "lots" (i.e. over HALF) of Broncos whose contracts expire by 2017.

It could well be that losing Jackson just means keeping Trevathan, which would be better anyway, IMHO: Not only will it cost less, but our depth behind Danny is less talented and experienced than that behind Jackson, and tendering Marshall only buys us a year, as opposed to Wolfe being locked in for the foreseeable future. Also, Von and Ware making up for Jacksons absence is what they'd be doing anyway; asking them to help with short zone pass coverage over the middle would be a waste.

If Jackson goes, Vance Walker plays his final contract year the way he started 2015: As a solid starter at DE, but in Jacksons spot instead of Wolfes. Then we re-sign Antonio Smith to reliably spell him and we ought to be fine for ~$10M/yr less than Jackson's demanding.

Vons deal can be structured all kinds of ways. It doesnt even have to have a huge hit on this years cap, same for the rest of the contracts. Any base salaries alotted to this year or portions of signing bonuses assigned to this year will hit our cap, but we have alot of flexibility. Elway

and company have done a fantastic job with the money in my opinion. Von being franchised put us over the cap by 2 mil or so, but we can get that space back.

With Peyton off the books, a reduction of Clady, possible restructuring of Ware and DT, we will have plenty of room . We are in the top seven in cap space next year, having $86 mil to play with.....that cap is available to us THIS year. We wont spend it all, but if we used $50 mil, we still

have $36 left.

We are in great shape capwise imo.

Dont be surprised to see some nice free agents walk in our doors this year if Malik doesnt sign.

As for OZ, we wont overpay.

Nor Trevathan.

Again: That only DELAYS rather than AVOIDING the cap hit, and only by a single year: When we must re-sign/replace roughly 30 of our current players (i.e. OVER HALF.) Only way that works is if we can save a bunch of cap space this year, then roll it into 2017 when we'll desperately need it. Short form:

Every penny new contracts "save" with magical accounting THIS year is spent NEXT year, so that's zero-sum (at best; inflation pushes contracts higher EVERY year.)

First of all we arent giving it to three guys. And we have more than enough cap to play a dang good roster. We will have 10 drafted rookies coming into town soon along with a slew of undrafted.

Our roster is DEEP. A good draft will make it DEEPER. And when all is said and done Joel, Maliks money will go to others. If we dont have the space, how are the Broncos planning on paying Malik the 5 year 50 mil contract along with Oz at 15 mil per year? Are you saying that

if we sign those two we cant get Trevathan or any of the others on board? The Broncos will spread that money designated to Malik in other areas if they think they got value.

Id like them to go Oline if Malik goes elsewhere. I also wouldnt mind signing Forte at a good number......doubt it happens......but you never know. With Foster on the market now, he may be a plugin as well, sort of a lottery signing. Maybe we strike it rich, maybe we dont.

John is going to spend the money wisely. He wants another trophy in 2016.......and 17......and 18......

We got the space. You'll see.

This is all I'm saying. Elway's not the one talking about his desperate hope Jackson will "settle" for $10-12M/yr. I half suspect he's gaming the system, deliberately bidding Jackson up knowing other GMs are dumb enough to beat his offer by a fair margin; I just hope he doesn't outsmart himself there.

This is why I don't want to drop all that money on Jackson though: Because we NEED Von and practically need Oz, but simply WANT Jackson for a D that wouldn't miss a beat without him and could spend $10-12M/yr far more productively re-signing/extending half a dozen or more key players. As on so many other issues, I'm not saying Jackson's a BAD nor even average player, only that the many other Broncos we can sign for what he wants collectively produce FAR more.

Yeah, not really thrilled about Forte (seems like Foster with slightly less injuries and production) but the rest seems reasonable: I'll never argue against adding studs on the offensive line, especially one that's been SO bad for SO long we haven't been to keep a starting QB OR RB upright >2 months since... 2010? MAYBE?

In the big picture though (i.e. more trophys in 2017, 2018 and beyond) all our depth doesn't mean SQUAT if all GONE next year. So re-signing 7-9 starters and role players to long contracts averaging $1½M/yr is appeals far more than re-signing Jackson ALONE for $10-12M/yr. That's a THIRD of next years FAs locked up as tightly as DT, Wolfe and Harris (about the only ones we've secured for long deals) at the cost of just ONE second-best complementary player whose replacement we HAVE.

Unfortunately, the Raiders have a ton of cash to spend and are so close to the pinnacle on both sides of the ball that they can make moves that will make them favorites to win the west. So I have a feeling none of us are going to like the moves they make, whether it involves former Broncos or not.

Good GM's let good players go and draft better ones. That's how the Pats have won 4 super bowls under Belichick's reign. If he doesn't drop his demands, some team will grant him his wish and Denver will walk off with a 2rd round comp pick.

And good teams have to have those starters with rookie contracts to stay under the cap. You can't pay everyone top dollar but you keep the best....and you have to do it on both sides of the ball.

Elway reportedly offered Malik a contract worth something around $11M a year, which is already $2 M more than Derek Wolfe got. But, Malik wants top dollar, and that is likely to be $14M a year.

At this point, I'd be shocked if he comes back. I'd rather they pay Brock Osweiler anyway because while they can replace Malik, it's harder to find a decent QB. This is reportedly the deepest DT class in the draft in NFL history (according to Mel Kiper anyway), so the Broncos can probably find a replacement for Malik in the draft and in the meantime promote Vance Walker or Antonio Smith.
