The Washington Redskins have broken off negotiations with quarterback Kirk Cousins, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

No further talks are scheduled, the source told Schefter. Another source recently told ESPN that the two sides were not close in earlier discussions and that gap had not been closed in the ensuing weeks.

The source also told Schefter it's not a foregone conclusion that the Redskins would then use the franchise tag on Cousins. Teams have until March 1 to apply the franchise tag.

Interesting. I wonder how this impacts RGIII's status. He's still got a year left, right? The assumption was that they were gonna cut him? Guess I'll go look...

Can we all agree that Cousins would be more expensive than both RGIII and/or Brock Osweiller?

$$$ Cousins
$$ Osweiller
$ Griffin III

^^^^Right?

I think Cousins and Osweiller are on the same plane, with a slight advantage to Oz (from a Broncos perspective) because of his familiarity with the system.

I didn't really see Cousins play much this year though.

Cousins did pretty well but struggled a little in the playoffs.

The Skins fans I know see Cousins as on the brink of the better QBs in the league. I don't think Os is there.

Most would rank Cousins over Os at this time.

Cousins has a winning record this season and great numbers too, against below .500 teams. Does that mean something?

I think on the NFL market, Cousins is more expensive than Osweiller (more games). And I think that should be leverage for the Broncos when it comes to Osweiller. In the end, if Osweiller becomes too expensive, a short contract with RGIII, will be cheap enough (playing for a successful team will be enticing for RGIII) to see how he pans out. To see if he is coach-able and willing to grow. Honestly, I wouldn't want to do anything more with Osweiller too. For taking 1st team reps one day out of the week for nearly two full seasons, getting ALL the reps while he was a starter should have really put him over the edge. But instead, DLs were able to read his eyes and deflect passes and he was scared to throw when defenses play man.

I watched quite a bit of Cousins this year, and I'm not nearly as impressed with him as I was before this season. First year with full year starting, so it's understandable that everything then comes to light, and gets criticized. But Cousins certainly has more to show, and, will attract quite a bit of attention around the NFL if he decides to leave.

I would hope cousins would get a contract to set the market.
