Wade Phillips' relentless Denver defense is coming off of one of the most impressive performances in AFC Championship Game history, hitting Tom Brady more times (20) than any quarterback in the past decade.

"I got a defense full of stars," Phillips raved to The MMQB's Peter King after the Broncos' 20-18 victory.

Despite dropping seven players into coverage, Phillips generated consistent pressure with just three or four rushers. Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware and Derek Wolfe combined for a whopping 15 QB hits -- more than any entire defense recorded in a single game this season.

Ware is one of the premier defensive stars of his generation, Miller is an annual All-Pro candidate and Wolfe has begun channeling J.J. Watt over the past month.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.— Wade Phillips has been nothing but deferential this year when it comes to his top-ranked Denver Broncos defense.

It’s his assistant coaches, he says, who teach the technique and spend the most time with players. And it’s those players, guys like linebacker Von Miller and cornerback Aqib Talib, Phillips says, who truly make his scheme run. In his slow, Texas drawl, Phillips will say he’s just, “clanging the bell” on the Broncos’ defensive train.

But it’s all just a front.

Read Phillips’ tweets — yes, the 68-year-old three-time former NFL head coach is a prolific tweeter under the handle @sonofbum — and listen closely to his recent news conferences, and you’ll discover a brilliant defensive mind and a man who takes great pride in not just building a defensive scheme, but his ability to adapt it year to year, roster to roster.

from same article

“I don’t understand the people that say, ‘Hey, this is our scheme, and that guy can’t play in it. The guy can play, he’s a good player, but he can’t play in our scheme,' " Phillips said last week.

“Well, to me. There’s something wrong with your scheme.”

And that, indeed, has been the secret to his success in his first year as Denver's defensive coordinator. He saw Talib and fellow corner Chris Harris and knew they were best suited to play man-to-man coverage. Phillips saw Miller and veteran pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, whom Phillips also coached with the Dallas Cowboys, and knew how he could aggressively send both off opposite edges while stunting defensive ends Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson through the middle. Phillips saw two inside linebackers, Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall, who were strong against the run, but that he could trust to cover running backs on anything from screens to deep routes.

Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips connects with players

A 68-year-old man with a Texas drawl and a Broncos windbreaker with a logo melted from the dryer made this week possible. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips arrived in Denver as a second choice to Cincinnati Bengals assistant Vance Joseph. Phillips spent the next 13 months turning the Broncos into the No. 1 defense.

It has been a truism of the NFL for decades: when a defense needs a jolt, Phillips wanders into town with jumper cables and self-deprecating jokes. In 1981 in New Orleans, his first as boss, he restored the team's dignity as fans removed sacks from their heads. During the 2015 season, he put AFC champion caps on his players' heads as the Broncos transitioned from a robotic run-stopping scheme to a moshpit of mayhem.

"That's the good thing about being old and being in the league a long time. They think, 'This guy is a good coach.' Whether I was or not, they thought it. So they believe in everything I am saying," Phillips said, smiling. "And they know I love my job and I love them."
