ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos have waived tight end Dan Light and signed tight end Nick Kasa to the practice squad.

Kasa, a sixth-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders, appeared in 16 games with one start in the 2013 season. He recorded one reception, a 9-yard touchdown against the Broncos in Week 17. In seven preseason games, Kasa caught seven passes for 60 yards with one touchdown.

The second-year veteran out of Colorado missed the 2014 season after tearing his ACL in August.

The day after they clinch a super bowl berth they are still transacting and preparing for next year. Amazing! Thats why they are the best.

Man, that would suck to be the guy who gets cut right before the Super Bowl, though.

Dumb. Sign a guy that was cut by the Panthers at some point this season. And tell him to bring his playbook.

Wikipedia has no 3 cone time on him. Worthless!

That is kinda lame, but OTOH, it's not like he was a key (or even minor) contributor to getting us there. So if he doesn't look like he'll be a contributor to getting us BACK there, sign someone who does.

Kasa should have been signed a long time ago.

He was a 5 star recruit local kid who went to CU - we had high hopes for him. He never really panned out because he was too light to play DE where he was recruited, and converted to TE later in his career. Would be cool if he could put it together here.

Wasn't Kasa one of Hawkins' top signings and he was basically a bust? I think he was a four star DE out of high school.

Broncos have done a lot of tinkering with PS TEs - there was a lot of enthusiasm about Heuerman though and I'd assume Green and Daniels aren't going anywhere next year.

May not leave much opportunity for Kasa.

I always forget we have Heuerman..can't wait to see what he has.

Was just thinking the same, and that tjr is right: Even with Davis increasingly looking like a wasted trade and Daniels getting older, Green's a solid blocker who's shown flashes as a receiver, and when we throw a 3rd round pick who only missed his rookie year because of injury... that doesn't leave much room....

You guys got it all wrong. Belicheck did this about 7 years back. Something in the rules.....IM not exactly sure what they are but basically:

Should the Broncos win the SuperBowl they will get rings. Because Lite was on the squad for most of the season (or something to that effect) he would get a ring too. By cutting him and adding this other guy, this new guy would be able to get a SB ring.

So basically, Kubiak just did this new TE a huge favor.

Huh, didn't know that; in that case, if anyone else gets hurt, give Kubiak my number.

Yeah, im not 100% on the rules but I remember belicheck did it a few years ago and that was why. He was doing the new guy a favor since the existing guy would still get a ring.

It's at the discretion of the team. There is no hard and fast rule on who gets a ring, or qualifications for getting one. The team gets to decide.

Right but from my understanding when BB did it, Lite would still get a ring since he was on our roster for whatever amount of time and then the new guy would also get one since he was when we won........or something to that effect.

I just remember when BB did it we all thought he was a total ass face (he is) but the story came out later that he actually did a favor to the new guy as the old guy who was cut still got one.

Cool story on Kasa - he was watching the AFCCG from the stands when he got the call that the Broncos wanted him for the PS:

The tight end, out of football since the spring, got a phone call while sitting in the stands last weekend, watching the Broncos beat New England in the AFC title game.

He dropped his phone and cracked the screen -- that's another story -- but when he finally restored his service, he learned the Broncos wanted to sign him to the practice squad to help them get ready for the Super Bowl against Carolina.

"It's been pretty crazy. Kind of indescribable," said Kasa, who was signed Monday and would have to be activated from the practice squad in order to play in the game. "These guys have been working hard toward this for a long time. For me to come in at the end here, is just kind of an out-of-the-ordinary event. I'm honored to be here and ready to do whatever I can to help."

That includes playing the part of Panthers tight end Greg Olsen in practice. He's been studying film of the Pro Bowl tight end to give Denver's top-ranked defense an accurate portrayal.

"My role is to be the best Greg Olsen that I can," said Kasa, who went to high school in Broomfield, Colorado, and played at the University of Colorado. "I didn't see this coming. I thought the season was drawing to an end. I was ready to move on to the next year. Surprised me with this call. I'm ready to go."

Lucky for him we didn't just call the next guy on our list, or we'd have Harold T. Stone at TE....

Wouldn't he get an AFC Championship ring for winning a conference title game?
