Excellent! Kind of came out of nowhere. Can't wait to see what the numbers look like. He has been a monster this year. He was always great against the run but his pass rushing has been awesome since he's come back.

I'd say that's likely, but I believe he said they looked at the numbers and given what they both wanted, it was impossible to keep both. That doesn't mean negotiations can't continue in the offseason. Malik will probably command more than Wolfe.

That's big bucks, but it sounds about right to me.

As for Barrett, according to Over the Cap, he's still on the books cheap for 2016. I wouldn't worry about him yet.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In John Elway's first three years as executive vice president of football operations, his focus was fortifying the hollow roster he inherited by any means necessary -- which included heavy free-agent investment.

But with homegrown players maturing, the focus has changed in the last two years to keeping as many of those players as the constraints of the salary cap allow.

That defined their moves last year, with WR Demaryius Thomas and CB Chris Harris Jr. retained on long-term contracts, a fifth-year option given to OLB Von Miller and the re-signing of TE Virgil Green.

Friday's re-signing of defensive end Derek Wolfe to a four-year contract offers a strong indication that this will again be the Broncos' primary offseason thrust in the coming months.

There was an article about Wolfe a month ago or so, where Wolfe was asked about his contract status and said he and the Broncos had talked about it, and he would be willing to give Denver a small discount. Well it happened. Jackson is going to get several mil more in the open market. Smart move by Elway.

I was fairly critical of Wolfe coming into this year - he felt like one of those classic over-hyped Broncos whose production didn't match their popularity.

He made comments coming into the year that he felt like Wade Phillips' defense would really benefit his productivity - and I felt like this was a put up or shut up year for him. And he didn't disappoint. He is a pocket collapsing SOB, and is an intimidating force on the DL. I kind of like it that he doesn't seem totally mentally stable too.

I dunno about over hyped. He was just never flashy and people gave him a hard time about not having more sacks. But he is one of the best run stopping DE in the NFL the last couple years. Now healthy and he is an impact player who has been constant this year. His game has really come on in this defense.

What you said is basically is bio before Denver drafted him. Some of the reason he wasn't getting sacks is how he was used. I said when Denver drafted him that he would get about 6 to 8 a year. For three out of those four years he's pretty much been in that range. The only year it didn't happen was last season.

Awesome ******* news! Great dollar amount, probably would have gotten about 10M per on the market and a bit more guaranteed. Wolfe has been a beast this year and taken another couple steps in his development, very important and shrewd move by Elway to get this done before FA. Now if he can find some way to lock down Malik who will probably command the same type of contract... I'm ready to call Elway a wizard.

They will certainly try and keep Malik Jackson. They can franchise Von Miller if they want at around $16 M which is around $6 M more than he's currently making, so they need to come up with some more scratch.

But, Peyton's $15 M will come off the cap unless he comes back next season (he's supposed to earn $20 M but he was never going to get that). And Ryan Clady is supposed to get $10.5 M and there's NO way he gets remotely that if he's even back.

They want to give his starting job to Ty Sambrailo, so he's probably gone.

And then Vernon Davis' $4 M and Evan Mathis' $4 M also combine for another $8 M.

Adding just those players up adds $33 M in cap relief. From that they have to subtract Miller, Wolfe, and every other FA they re-sign. There are a LOT of them.

Todd Davis is an "exclusive rights FA" which I believe gives them the right to match any offer. Nelson's under contract for 2016.

From Rotoworld:

Lineman 1/15/2016: Signed a four-year, $36.7 million contract. The deal contains $17.5 million guaranteed, including a $7.5 million signing bonus. 2016-2019: Under Contract, 2020: Free Agent

So, the details aren't disclosed, but $7.5 M is paid immediately leaving $10 M in other guarantees over 4 years or $2.5 M guaranteed per year.

Do you realize that at 5% interest on your money, you would earn $375,000 a year just from return on capital. It's less than that due to taxes, but still, by signing now instead of a year from now he does earn probably another $200k or so versus getting the money next year.

That's incentive to sign now.

JJ Watt is the best defensive player in the NFL, but I guarantee you he benefited immensely from playing under this defensive line coach and in this system. Wolf and that type of role I firmly can believe should have 9 or 10 sacks next year. People forget that he had 6 in his rookie season

A, they're far worse at T than DL.

B, Clady is their best OL.
