View Full Version : Nickname for this defense

What do you think would be a good nickname for this defense?

In my opinion, I think that Agent Orange is a great nickname for this D. This is a new era. The Orange Crush name was for the 70's and early 80's (I also called our D in 1997 and 98 the Money Defense because they came up with big turnovers in the playoffs).

I think it's kinda gay to assign a nickname to it to be honest. Orange Crush was cool in it's day, but you can't reuse it and every alternative I have seen it just cringeworthy. The 2000 Ravens didn't need a nickname. They just went out and dominated people. Let's just do that.

Chris Harris was using "No Fly Zone" in the NBC post-game and I'm down with that. At first, you would think that would only be about the secondary but if you think of stuffing a run or a screen and going "Uh uh, that ain't gonna fly against us." then you can apply it to the whole defense.

They can call themselves "ISIS" for all I care, just keep dousing flames like they did against the Packers all night. I want to see them double-team Gronk with Harris and Ward (one to blanket and one to punish) so Lady Brady has to find other open receivers that have to beat Talib and Roby one-on-one. If we bottle them up the way we did the Packers, that defense can call themselves anything they want and I'll approve.

Thats my point with the "no limit soldiers". Remember the superbowl year, TD and company wanted the team to be called the "no limit soldiers". They did their best to make it stick and it didnt. You cant just name a defense. It has to just come. Like the Mile High Salute. But honestly, like you said, its pretty old. Should we keep up this play on defense for say 3 years or something then an apt nickname would work. Until then its just our defense. Lock down defense.

If I say "remember the Three Amigoes"... that's a lot more poignant to the fans than saying "remember the three WRs we had back in the 80s?"

I find nothing wrong with having a nickname for the defense... just as people want to nickname the individual players. The TEAM is what stays with the fans, while the players move on.

When a fan-base refers back to "the orange crush"..the "Purple People Eaters" or the "steel curtain" or .... it's reminiscing of a specific team and specific era. I like the idea of nicknaming the defense. 20 years from now, when talking about a specific team/unit/defense.... the "remember that "NFZ" defense? Man they were awesome." That brings back an instant recollection that is more recognizable to the 'average' fans...and even fans of other fan-bases.

They absolutely should have a nickname.

But the Ravens have always been known for that defense. When you talk about the Ravens, what is the first thing you think of.... that defense. People don't and won't think about our defense when you mention the Broncos. It's a diffferent franchise, its a different team, its a different scenario, its a different era...and not all are treated equal.

But people also remember the Orange Crush, the Steel Curtain, the Purple People Eaters, and the Monsters of Midway.

Give me a name like that anytime over the "defense of 2015"....

Nothing against those 2000 Ravens, but if the Broncos D can rock it like this all the way through the playoffs, and considering todays complex high-powered offensive schemes vs even 15 years ago, they'll go down as one of the greatest ever. But that has to be earned and we're not there yet. Let's see what December and January bring.

Joel
11-06-2015, 05:39 AM
That's a Joel's post sized nickname
Offensively:

The Cheatriots lead the league in pts/gm; Cincy's 3rd (for comparison, GB's "only" 10th, and we're 13th.)
The Cheatriots are 2nd (to SD) in passing yds/gm; Cincy's 7th (GB's 27th, but we're actually 12th now.)
The Cheatriots are the only team with less turnovers than GB (3 instead of 4, in 7 games) and Brady has only ONE Int; Cincy's tied for 5th least (8; we're tied for 20th with 12.)

Defensively:

Cincy's 4th in pts/gm; N*Es 8th (GB was #1 over us by a single point, but has dropped to 7th while we rose to #1.)
Cincy's tied for 10th in takeaways (12; GB is next with 11, we're 2nd with 17 and Philly has 19)

The Cheatriots are also tied with GB for 2nd best turnover differential (7) and Cincy's tied for 6th (4; we're tied with Carolina in between at 5, and the Giants lead with 10.)

So let's hold off on nicknames till at least Nov. 30. For that matter, we still play the only guy with more passing yds than Brady TWICE, and he's got a career-best completion percentage so far (which is saying something, because his career percentage is 7th all-time.) Butwe all know the real problem: Every time I mock N* pre-game, I regret it.

Also, we've NEVER stopped Gronk and probably never will: He was on IR the ONE time we beat them. He'll probably stop by to burn us one last time the day he goes to Canton.

Last time, I believe we used Talib WITH Ward over the top; SOB still had 9 catches for 105 yds (their leading receiver) and a TD. We held them to 66 rushing yds on 25 carries but were still outscored >2:1. Of course, they held US to an even worse 43 rushing yds on 17 carries; if we can run on their D (30th in rushing yds/gm) it'll help a lot; it nearly beat them in 2013 @Foxboro till Moreno got a bone bruise at the end of regulation.

Also, it'd be nice if we don't let them nearly block a punt, then return it for a TD with our whole coverage unit behind half their blockers. Only punt return, and it's a TD....

Sorry, still a bit bitter; anyway, who tries to cover Gronk seems to vary by who failed least last time. On the other hand, this is the first time since 2011 we've met them (in the regular season) outside that crooked table they run, so maybe we'll fare better in Mile High. We did in the 2013 playoffs (albeit with Gronk on IR,) and we jumped out to a 13-0 lead on them in the 2011 game before we started shanking PATs, muffing punts at our goal line and generally blowing it.

I still like Harris on Gronk; he may not have Talibs smash mouth rep, but he's better at knocking down balls and just shutting out guys, because he's not always going for the pick, and when it IS complete he's Johnny on the spot with the tackle right away, rarely missing or shaken. You can tell he learned a lot from Champ (who learned a lot from Darrell Green) and I hope he's passing it on to Roby and Webster.

As for the name "no fly zone"..... it's more of a reference for the DBs than a name for the entire defensive unit. That would be the worst nickname in history.

Or read our own press clippings, then play like 100% of life's just showing up: That was a habit of Foxs Broncos, one I hoped Kubiak, Dennison and Phillips fixed. It'll be interesting to see the Ds response: Whether they collapse, or (more likely) get angry, in which case the question is do they get angry at themselves or misdirect accountability.

24 points isn't enough for a defense worthy of a nickname?

The offense didn't leave McCray singled on a Slot receiver, or leave a RB uncovered multiple times, or let Luck run for multiple 3rd and long conversions.

You need a new shtick homie.

The defense has had too much strain the first 7 games. So on off day for the defense the offense cant bail them out and score 30 with a qb making 15 million and two high paid wideouts? Blah this defense is the one and only reason the broncos were 7-0. So before you get goofy you need to recognize that fact. Without this defense the broncos are frickin 0-7 and getting blown the hell out due to mannings turnovers. Get real.

So what exactly caused the breakdown against the Colts? From my understanding Luck is really bad under pressure. That didn't seem to be the case tonight. Either that or we just failed to cover receivers. Anyone have an explanation? At least next week we won't have as good of a QB, wide receivers, or running back to worry about.

He wasn't under pressure. Phillips out-thought himself today. Saw that the Colts had struggled to protect Luck and brought the house. Should have stuck to his guns and let the front 4/5 do its job and leave 6, 7 or 8 in coverage like he did the last seven games.

The players have to make plays and they didn't, but Phillips failed them with his scheme. I love the old man, but he out-thought himself this week.

Switched back to that scheme in the third quarter and started to hit him. Damage was done.

I really hope you misheard that, because the thought of letting a guy who can't cover and loves to hit unilateral discretion to blitz on every down horrifies me. If it's true, I really hope he at least gives his teammates a heads up. Maybe something like "hey, Chris, I know you're one weakness is covering burners deep, but I'm not giving you help over the top this time, 'cause I really wanna rupture this QBs spleen." I realize he's a SS, but wish HE realized that's not just a SLB who plays deep.

I have a nickname for this team: The team that needs to grow up.

If you want to be a championship team, you need to beat teams like Indy that are average. They didn't.

If they lose one of the next two games (against KC and Chi), I don't like their chances against NE, and this team may be an early exit from the playoffs. Then, Elway will have to continue to get rid of players on this team that are holding it back.

Contrary to Yash's prediction, we're not losing our next three games. We will pound KC in Denver. We could lose 2 out of the three though. Late November in Chicago, that's a toss-up game if the weather is bad. NE makes me nervous too - they basically look unstoppable, as usual. Damnit - I hate them.

We're basically seeing a team that does well at home, as they did against Green Bay, and can't get anything going offensively on the road. Remember how they struggled in Cleveland to beat the utterly woeful Browns who are now 2-7 and just got utterly crushed by the Bengals 31-10 in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the score suggests?

They struggle on the road because their OL gets dominated on the road - the crowd is loud, and the defense gets a quicker jump on the ball - and this OL is just not very good.

I know it's in the past and I should just let go, but I can't help feeling that the failure to make the Joe Thomas deal is fatal to the Broncos chances for a SB.

We've played more than 1/2 of our games (5) on the road, and are 7-1. Not sure what you're trying to prove here.

You think you're going to lose to the Chiefs? Really? They have a TE, one WR, and a backfield that lacks Charles. On top of that their offensive line is awful.

Their linebackers and secondary are not world beaters. You can scheme their pass rushers away, truth be told.

Colts have lost to the bills jets patriots saints and panthers. 4 good teams, one bad saints team. Then the only teams they beat were Tennessee texans and jaguars. 3 pathetic teams. But yet they beat the broncos.... Because our offense couldn't bail out the defense FOR ONCE. Somto think were just going to smack around the chiefs bears and patriots is foolish. The broncos are going to lose 3 of our next 4 games total if not go 0-4. I have zero faith in manning therefor i have zero hope in this offense. Being effective enough to win games going down the stretch. The turnovers will not stop and the good defense will have let downs due to being exhausted and players dropping as the season goes on. They was breaking manning down on nfl live and talking about how bad he's actually playing and talking about him needing to run 3 steps to chuck it downn field just to get the ball 30 yards. They were also talking and breaking down his ints and how bad they are. Essentially there saying manning is holding the offense back. We need brock in there but that's not going to happen unless manning is injured.
