Good on him. I thought he played well, but never imagined he would get this award.

That's the third time this year that a Bronco has won this award. I didn't even think this one was super obvious, but it's great to see. We are stacked on defense :defense:

I actually thought Ware would get it but Wolfe was all over every run. Having him back and healthy is just huge! Glad he's getting recognition. It is well-deserved.

This award is all the more impressive when you factor in that I have never actually seen Wolfe make a play. I will take their word for it.

Dude is a huge part of our run defense. DL is better with him in it for sure. He is not flashy but man does he have a constant motor.

I hope he gets resigned. Prefer it over Malik actually.

He was a monster in that game.

Wolfe presence in the run game is like playing with 12 men on the field all the time.

"I thank the #green bay packers for running the ball at me," said Wolfe.

If (per a discussion in another thread) VonDoom's right to suspect Wolfe spelled Sly at NT, that could go far toward explaining why you never saw him.

Unless you mean in his career, but I've seen him make plays in the past. The problem's what NightTerror said: Run stuffers don't get much glory, especially in the modern league. But I think it was John Lynch covering one of our games who kept repeating, "you have to earn the right to rush the passer," like a broken record: If you don't stop the run, you'll never get a chance to stop the pass. Who's gonna risk an incomplete, sack or Int when they can just move the chains all day gashing you for 5-6 yds/run, exhausting and battering your D till you couldn't mount a decent sustained pass rush if GIVEN the chance?

As noted in the previously referenced thread, if Wolfe made Conference Defensive Player of the Week subbing at NT to keep Sly fresh, yeah, I think he earned it. 3-4 NT is about the most physically exhausting and punishing position in football, so it's hard to have just ONE guy forcing double teams and collapsing pockets all game, every game—but if the rotational guy's not pretty good in his own right, it leaves a gaping hole in the middle of the D when the starter's tired/hurt.

If Wolfe's filling that role AND starting at DE when Sly's in, I'm elated: Kilgo's looked good in limited action so far, too, so we've got the 3rd injury insurance NT I want, locking down the position, and both Walker and Smith played well in Wolfes place during his suspension; they can do the same when he moves inside so Sly gets a breather.

A final passing note: Is 6'5" 285 lb. Derek Wolfe the SKINNIEST 3-4 lineman since Howie Long (the same height, but ~20 lbs. lighter)? The above pic shows some of it, but:

That's not a TE or FB, folks: It's a 3-4 DE. Maybe that and his height help explain his high motor; his Combine 40 was right at 5.0, but he was 10 lbs. heavier then.

I wonder how much he can clean.

Prob'ly the whole plate (he's not THAT skinny. ;)) Combine said he did 33 reps, but who knows his max.

True, but it's all we get. For anyone interested, here's his full NFL.com draft profile (again, he's listed 10 lbs. lighter now; after the yo-yoing his sophomore year, who knows?) http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/derek-wolfe?id=2533026

Reads like a classic 3-4 DE or 4-3 LDE to me. To me, he and Jackson always looked more like 3-4 DEs than 4-3 RDEs, so maybe we were always moving that way and Wade just clinched it. That would make sense given Elways preseason comments about getting back to the Reeves philosophy.

He's just another one of those second round picks Elway sucks at picking.

The 52 was closer to a 3-4 than a 4-3.

Fair point, which may help explain why the transition was so seamless for Wolfe/Jackson. Strongside 4-3 DE isn't THAT big a change anyway; the main difference is fans stop insisting that shutting down the run through a blocking TE and STILL leading the team with 10½ sacks isn't good enough.
